I had to help my mother with a craft project for a baby shower last weekend.

I'm pretty sure there's still glitter on my face.

Re:beards, this.

Also, I don't get why capitalism assumes money is a good motivator, anyway. The amount of money I earn never seems to have a positive correlation with the hours I'm willing to work or my enjoyment of the work. At all.

Allegedly, that's a product of the increased bias in favor of extroverts in our work cultures. Introverts tend to be unmotivated by money, where extroverts tend to be. Not law, by any means, but it does potentially explain a lot.

[EDIT]

How unhappy I am with my job is starting to get problematic... Just being here is enough to spike my anxiety levels up towards breaking point, and it's basically an eight-hour game of balancing internal calming exercises with getting sh*t done...

An eight-hour game with 1.5-2 hours of driving on either end. This morning was particularly awful, because it was pouring the entire way. Nothing like spending 2 hours fearing for your life before 8 hours of significant stress.

TL;DR: I'd be beyond useless in a combat situation.

Edited, Oct 10th 2013 9:15am by idiggory

quit

they either give you enough money to make the stress worth it or you find something else

edit:

to elaborate.

i was on the verge of walking from my job do to be unsatisfied with the work & underpaid. talked to my boss about it, mainly about the job satisfaction. he actually mentioned money. my day to day work got better for a week or so, then got all bleh again.

so was back on the verge of leaving with no job as back up. then the boss told me i was getting a decent sized pay bump, im still underpaid just less so, and the work started getting back into more interesting stuff. we also may add to the team soon, which will hopefully mean some new person does the more tedious stuff i have to deal with and i get more interesting projects.

staying at a job that makes you miserable, especially if the money isnt a strong enough incentive as enough money can make something meh into ok, is bad idea. the stress and loathing it inspires will just bring you down and potentially start to poison other parts of your life. also staying in the hopes it gets better or some new thing comes along can mean you just stay there forever.

actually quitting with no back up plan will light a fire under your ass and push you forward instead of just angrily thrashing around in quicksand.

Honestly, the money is great, so I should probably stop complaining.

I'm just not motivated by cash. Sure, there's plenty I'd like to do WITH cash. I'd like to build a great gaming rig. I'd like to take a month trip through Europe. Etc.

But, honestly, as long as my needs are met, and I have wiggle room to add in some wants, I'm perfectly happy.

Of course, it doesn't help that a significant chunk of that additional cash is going to paying down my debt, which isn't all that gratifying. Smiley: lol

Start drinking more beer then. I suggest Southern Tier's Pumking, basically a beer that tastes like pumpkin pie and it's made in New York so it should be available to you. Should that not be enough to get you drunk they make more wonderful beers as does Brooklyn Brewery (their Black Chocolate Stout being the most well known) and Ommegang (try their Hennepin). Should you want to make the trip up to Vermont, both The Alchemist and Hill Farmstead are more than a little famous and well worth your attention (although both with a distribution barely larger than the brewery grounds).

New Jersey, unfortunately, is a bit of a **** hole as far as beer goes with only 33 breweries and none that I've ever heard of.

Edit: somehow I thought Delaware was in that mess of tiny blue states up north, since it's bordering New Jersey that meas you may be able to get DFH as well which opens up more options for wonderful beer.

Triumph in Princeton's decent. They have good food, at least. My sister and brother-in-law like good beers, and they enjoy it at least. I usually get the lightest thing they have. Smiley: lol

And judging by the label, I think I've had the Pumking before. Don't remember the taste, though.

I wish more breweries here would make a pumpkin beer, I've only ever had one and that was tasty (but a mediocre example of a pumpkin beer).

Lots of people confuse Delaware and Rhode Island. The only difference other than geographical location is that people who live in Delaware call themselves Delawaranders while Rhode Island residents call themselves Rhode Islandites. Meanwhile, most impartial observers say that they should be known as Delawarians and Rhode Islanders.

It's a real conundrum.

You know, the interesting thing about this Pokemon launch is that it's universal.

I've never gone into this process without having a full list of version differences. Never played the game without knowing what pokemon I could find, where. I was always able to check to see if I had caught everything before moving on.

It's oddly exciting.

There's only 1 thing I know about Delaware and that is that Dogfish Head brewery is in that state. the only reason I even know Rhode Island (it's not eve a friggin island!) exists is because I've followed the last presidential election.

See, at the moment I'm not getting paid but I'm perfectly happy being in the lab/library/lecture hall 55-60 hours a week and having three days of social life this semester. Stuff like that makes me think I am kind of weirdly introverted.

Every time I got paid more than minimum wage I got fired shortly thereafter because I genuinely can't perform at a job I don't love and I'd rather go hungry than do stupid stuff for some person who's defined as my superior for arbitrary reasons.

And when I'm really lucky, they look so ridiculous that I get to just get a surprised, hearty laugh just by checking my phone.

Angry texts suck, and it's good to have a motivator for your exercise. I've got a fancy beer and the latest Avatar episode for when I finish making the first part (of 3) for a website I'm designing ready to build (everything in neatly named photoshop layers with measurements etc. 4 pages and I'm at over 100 layers).

Varrick has been my favorite character thus far, but the season as a whole has been pretty disappointing. And it's not like I didn't give it a chance. There's this huge gulf between Last Airbender and Legend of Korra.

Season 1 of Korra was entertaining, if rushed. Season two so far has been disappointing but maybe if they kill off Unalaq soon and push Mako to the background the series could be saved.

I'll let you know which one is better then. Although the rebooted version is in 720 and 1080p so that's one advantage. It's also supposed to go into the (very brutal) arc from the manga that the original Anime missed due to the.. euh... erratic release schedule of the manga.

@Aeth,

You wanted to know what was different about this Pokemon game. I'm not far in yet, but there are some significant things I've noticed. The game has some of the best polish on its small details I've seen in a long time.

The general formula (Catch pokemon, train pokemon, beat other trainers) IS the same. But the small details are really, really nice.

For instance, in all the games your early options for Pokemon include a normal/flying Bird, some kind of mammal-based normal pokemon, and a worm-ish pokemon. XY does, too, and then they also tossed into that same route another option for each of those types from earlier generations. So right off the bat, you get to start making actual decisions about your party. And if this trend continues, it'll mean you don't always feel like you need to use <insert pokemon> because it offers new type coverage. Even then, you'll get to choose.

And then in the first forest, they add Caterpie (and the second stage caccoon pokemon), plus Pansage and Panpour (and possibly Pansear - haven't found it yet), which are elemental monkey pokemon. So now I have a grass type, and if I started with Fennekin I'd have all three starter types. Plus, you can get a Pikachu here (though it's a spawn rate akin to the original red/blue, but the pokedex says it's the only place to get one, so **** it all I'm going to).

Every other game spoon feeds you the pokemon, because they really want to focus on their new set. This game seems to be saying "***** that, let's give this is a pokemon game, give them a crap ton of pokemon).

And it's awesome.

They also gave happiness a bigger effect in this game. Now, it can actually influence your pokemon's performance in battle, with a happy pokemon more likely to shrug off status ailments, hit the mob, etc. So there's reason to care about and invest in your team even along the way. And you get to raise happiness using the Poke-Amie minigame. At its basic level, it's sort of like a reduced Nintendogs. Then there's minigames you can play with them that also buff their happiness stats.

And the world is more alive and playful than ever before. I turned on a television, and it was a racing story about two pokemon - a Ryhorn and a Kadabra. The Ryhorn ran full-out, but the Kadabra didn't move... until he teleported past the finish line just before Ryhorn could cross. Which enraged Ryhorn so much he started rushing at the crowd. Smiley: lol

And, obviously, updated graphics. Considering just how huge that shift was, it's definitely felt. The greater range of movement, the new camera angle, the more dynamic pokemon movements in battle (using Pound on my Froakie actually has him jumping forward and pounding).

So, it all adds up.

I didn't bother getting Black/White 2. But so far, I'm happy with XY.

That was kind of my point. The story is also pretty much identical as far as I know.

Surprisingly, no.

The gameplay formula (find pokemon, catch pokemon, fight pokemon) is the same. And there are the gyms and such. But since Black/White they've put a very heavy emphasis on the story content, with gyms largely irrelevant to this.

Black/White had a story about an organization that was, allegedly, trying to free all pokemon from being enslaved by trainers, and their "leader" was someone who had a special gift for communicating with Pokemon. But the actual leaders of the organization (his advisors) were just using him to gain the foothold they needed to go after the legendaries for their own purposes of domination. So you were, y'know, stopping them. Then they set the second game in the same region, in the aftermath of that.

Don't know how well they did with the second, because I didn't play it.

But, yeah, the whole "YOU MUST DEFEAT THE ELITE FOUR!!!" story hasn't been a main plot line since the DS. Elite Four is still there, as are gyms. You still fight them. But now they're just boss battles that show gradated progress, not the actual story content.

I don't know what the story is in XY, because I'm too early for that, and never cared to spoil anything beforehand. But they've put a surprising amount of time into developing the supporting cast, and I'm still pretty early. But yeah, it feels WAY more like an RPG than any previous title at this point.

And they've spent most of their time since Black/White really talking about ways they wanted to prioritize the storytelling in the games.

And it's clearly why they've put so much effort into the feeling of team building in this game. They want you to interact with your Pokemon directly, in a way that's just about increasing the "bond" with them, because they really want the players to feel like a Pokemon trainer going on this journey.

Of course, like any RPG, the story probably won't last until cap. If you are interested in competitive battling, it's the fun stuff you do while you get there. But it seems like Nintendo is remembering that a lot of people aren't interested in competitive battling and, therefore, they need it to be a full game without that.

Huh, well, maybe I should get an emulator for the 3DS and Pokemon Black or X/Y then.

Edit: Also, Rumours is a brilliant album.

Also also, I hope the neighbors don't mid my awful singing/shouting along to Go Your Own Way...

That's some 1970s ***** right there Mac.

Have you listened to their prior album, Fleetwood Mac? Stevie Nicks' voice on Landslide is beautiful. I could listen to that song over and over. It has so much . . . anyway.

That entire album is great. The incessant beat on Rhiannon, Christine McVie's voice on Warm Ways. Just some great music.
