The current lot seem to be really desperate to make XIV look appealing, to the point I wonder if theyre just shilling and being paid to advertise.

I mean, they have a tough job, because that forum is having a weird existential crisis. Though I think it's also fair to note that FFXI probably brought them a lot of revenue, and they've gone further with FFXIV in creating a parser (which has some kind of weird, "hush hush, it's okay to use it as long as we don't talk about it" stance from Square Enix).

On the one hand, pretty much every thread is negative. On the other hand, if you criticize some aspect of the game, you're likely to get jumped on. And god forbid you introduce some kind of "It would be cool if someday they..." post.

The best way I can describe it is that you had the elitist FFXI players who migrated over and formed their own clique, and aggressively kept anyone else out of it. So then all the new posters sort of coalesced into an opposing clique. And they all disagree with each other on principle, regardless of the what they're actually saying. So it's half circle-jerk, half karma camping...

At least, that's the impression I get.

All the real FFXI elitists that posted on this site I remember don't even post anymore, and the ones that do aren't in the game forums. The "we don't want to play with you because you'll drag us down so we'll segregate ourselves" elitists, not the "we wish we were as good as the elitists so we'll ***** about everything we can while still PUGing" bunch.

Yeah, that's true.

FFXIV isn't a particularly elitist-centric game, anyway. There's only one dungeon in the game that seems like having a set group is useful for, from what I can tell. Could be wrong there, though. I literally don't care about endgame at all, as of right now. I'm really not interested in the gear race style of progression anymore.

Hey Maz! If you come across any To Øl beers you should try them, I had their Jule Mælk a few days ago to celebrate the Netherlands second podium sweep and I'm drinking their Frostbite now. Totally worth the outrageous pricetag.

Also, the fancy dancing skating is on TV (what's the English word for that?). Effeminate Japanese boys dancing on ice in girly clothes, it's like some sort of creepy yaoi in real life.

Also what's with the ridiculously hideous and tacky clothing? For such a gay sport you'd expect something more stylish.

That sounds wise. It's somewhat ironic that the second gayest sport in the Olympics is historically dominated by Russia. Although it doesn't come close to the clench your butt cheecks on the bulge of the guy you're lying on top off while going down a slide at 80+mph of men's double luge.

Sorry Digg, that event just ended.

Julemælk? That sounds positively disgusting, but I'll keep an eye out for it. It's a Christmas beer, yeah?

Oh, they have a bar here in the city. Will probably go pay it a visit.

It's a barrel aged sweet stout with 15% ABV. The milk part just means that it's got lactose to sweeten it.

We don't know why we suck at speedskating.

I know, lets blame the suits! Smiley: oyvey

Why can't we ever just admit we lost? I hate us sometimes. Smiley: rolleyes

For what it's worth, the makers of the Dutch/Russian suit (good for 14 out of 18 medals so far) said they have tested an air vent/mesh back and found the results to be detrimental.

The thing is though that with I think 2 years of work to find the best material for each bodypart these suits have roughly 3% less wind resistance than the last generation of suits. A bigger advantage perhaps is that the suits are sized in a way that pull you into a skating position which theoretically helps keep your technique and aerodynamic position better.

All in all, the difference in time is miniscule, aerodynamics is only a small part of the race and it's a small improvement in that. The mental aspect of feeling like you have an advantage is probably just as big as the effect of the suit itself.

As for Americans disappointing, a suit does not do all that. And for the women it's not even like they performed badly at all, they both improved a lot vs last year's world championship but they got surpassed by a bunch of Dutch on an insane gold rush and a Chinese girl with the perfect race at the perfect time. And keep in mind that Nesbitt's time, god for 9th place, was 1 second faster than her gold medal race 4 years ago, that's a gigantic leap in 4 years between two similar tracks.

See those are the kind of details that get lost in the "gold-metal or GTFO" culture that seems to follow the Olympic games here. One of the big reason I miss CBC coverage as well. Smiley: frown

There was some American paper where thet wrote we're so good at speed skating because we skate on canals to visit friends and family in the winter.

Yeah, the Dutch did that. In the 1500's...

Isn't genetic memory the plot of some sci-fi thriller? It reminds me of a movie, but I can't figure out the name.

So then why did Norway and the USSR dominate speed skating until the mid to late 60's?

Hmmm.

Aeon Flux had a weird cloning-memories sub-plot.

It's the basic plot foundation of Assassin's Creed.

But I can't think of anything where genetic memory itself was the plot.
