It's a collaboration between the guy who did this:

And the guy who did this:

The awesome singing part is done by Jason Paige, the guy who sang the original Pokémon theme song.

Now you realize I have to loathe him with the fiery heat of a thousand exploding suns, right?

Still a good singing voice.

Technically, exploding suns are cooler than suns that aren't... well, exploding.

But yeah, as much as I hate the Pokémon theme, mainly due to overexposure, he does a mean cover of Silent Night.

Must. Read. More!

According to the people in the comment section, the mass required to do the warp bubble thing was originally calculated to be equivalent to the mass of the Sun (i.e. never gonna happen). Then some dude at NASA did more maths and found the mass to "only" be that of Jupiter (also not gonna happen). Then a couple of years ago, same guy did better maths and found the required mass to be that of the Voyager probe, which is when the US government was like "Beam me up, Scotty" and started the project.

This is the most exciting thing I've read all day. I was hoping we'd **** off an alien race or two in my lifetime. ***** World War 3, let's make it Galactic War 1.

I need to learn more physics at some point. I never understood how a "warp drive" gets you around this problem:

Quote:
Interstellar space also contains a few microscopic dust grains (micron-sized is common) in a region about a few meters on a side. At their expected densities you are probably in for a rough ride, but it really depends on your speed. The space shuttle, encountering flecks of paint traveling at 28,000 mph (about 6 miles/second or 0.005 percent the speed of light) is pitted and pierced by these fast moving particles, but dust grains have masses a thousand times smaller than the smallest paint fleck, so at 0.005 percent light speed, they will not be a problem.

At 50 percent the speed of light which is the minimum for interstellar travel you will cover enough distance in a short amount of time, that your liklihood of encountering a large interstellar dust grain becomes significant. Only one such impact would be enough to cause severe spacecraft damage given the kinetic energy involved.

A large dust grain might have a mass of a few milligrams. Traveling at 50% the speed of light, its kinetic energy is given non-relativistically by 1/2 mv^2 so E = .5 (0.001 grams) x (0.5 x 3 x 10^10 cm/sec) = 1.1 x 10^17 ergs. This, equals the kinetic energy of a 10 gram bullet traveling at a speed of 1500 kilometers per second, or the energy of a 100 pound person traveling at 13 miles per second! The point is that at these speeds, even a dust grain would explode like a pinpoint bomb, forming an intense fireball that would melt through the skin like a hot poker melts a block of cheese.

The dust grains at interstellar speeds become lethal interstellar 'BB shots' pummeling your spacecraft like rain. They puncture your ship, exploding in a brief fireball at the instant of contact.

Your likelihood of encountering a deadly dust grain is simply dependent on the volume of space your spacecraft sweeps out. The speed at which you do this only determines how often you will encounter the dust grain in your journey. At 10,000 times the space shuttle's speed, the collision vaporizes the particles and a fair depth of the spacecraft bulkhead along the path of travel.

But the situation could well be worse than this if the interstellar medium contains lots of ice globules from ancient comets and other things we cannot begin to detect in interstellar space. These impacts even at 0.1c would be fatal...we just don't know what the 'size spectrum' of matter is between interstellar 'micron-sized' dust grains, and small stars, in interstellar space.

The Alcubierre drive gets rid of that issue, as far as I understand, with the warp bubble theory.

Quote:
"Researchers from the University of Sydney have done some advanced crunching of numbers regarding the effects of FTL space travel via Alcubierre drive, taking into consideration the many types of cosmic particles that would be encountered along the way. Space is not just an empty void between point A and point B… rather, it's full of particles that have mass (as well as some that do not.) What the research team — led by Brendan McMonigal, Geraint Lewis, and Philip O'Byrne — has found is that these particles can get "swept up" into the warp bubble and focused into regions before and behind the ship, as well as within the warp bubble itself."

Of course, this creates a problem when you stop moving at FTL speeds...

Quote:
"When the Alcubierre-driven ship decelerates from superluminal speed, the particles its bubble has gathered are released in energetic outbursts. In the case of forward-facing particles the outburst can be very energetic — enough to destroy anyone at the destination directly in front of the ship."

Ouchies.

Quote:
So how to avoid disintegrating your port of call? It may be as simple as just aiming your vessel a bit off to the side… or, it may not. The research only focused on the planar space in front of and behind the warp bubble; deadly postwarp particle beams could end up blown in all directions!
That's, um... not very reassuring. Smiley: lol

Though on the other hand that may be useful for that galactic war thing you're proposing.

The only way I see peace on earth happening is if we're all united against a common enemy from somewhere else in space.

Edit: also on Dutch food things: the first barrel of Dutch herring of the season was auctioned for €56,500 today. For reference, this is the first barrel of 2010 so you know the size.

It's a traditional auction for charity thing and basically national advertisement for the company that buys it so the price isn't as crazy as it seems.

I much prefer my Mercenary over my Gunslinger, but I got tired of the Empire. I don't like being the bad guys, even if I'm the good guy of the bunch (light side BH). They keep sending me out to do missions that are inherently bad, such as blowing up a bunch of cryo'd people on Taris. How about no? How about this mission being dark side regardless of what you do? Where's the choice in that? Also, Imperial cantinas and stations are so... so... uniform. So very dark gray and red. The Third Reich reference is strong with this one.

Coruscant holds a special place in my heart, and while you only get to see a very small part of it, it is so much better for my mental health than Dromund Kaas. Like Vette says: "Welcome to Dromund Kaas: where dreams go to die and legends are forced on the galaxy." The Republic side is much more... happy. Naive, yes, but also so very happy. Everything is over-saturated orange, blue, and green, and smooth edges. It makes me happy.

Except for the ships; they're ugly as sin.

Ah, well yeah. It can make for great photos though, Martin Parr has made quite a few brilliant photos of people while they're eating.

Then again, his photos are usually meant to be funny (and thought provoking).

Actually that's my least favorite part of the bounty hunter. Can't stand that ship. Mako is fun though. "So we're not evil right? Just doing a job? We're working for the bad guys but we're not bad?" or however the dilemma plays out exactly. BH is still my favorite character for riding that thin line between good and bad, depending on my mood. That and listening to a Miraluka swear profusely that she has no use for the force is always amusing.

My predictions about the semi finals of the women's hockey world cup somewhere else in this thread came true, America lost to Australia in shoot outs despite being the better team during the game and scoring 4 times, sort of (2-2 tie but the 2 Australian goals were bounced off an American stick and foot). In the shoot outs their inexperience and lack of skill meant they didn't have a snowball's chance in **** because it's such a high pressure situation where great technique and experience are crucial.

tl;dr: send your kids to play field hockey when they're 5 or 6 rather than when they get to high school.

My wife and I don't exactly agree about how to handle this particular topic. We both want our girl to be able to defend herself in case she gets into trouble, but we're constantly at odds over the best way to do that. As I've said before, she has been taking aikido all her life and can probably break most people three times her size easily without breaking a sweat and she feels that's the best solution. I believe in flame throwers.
