If I get into the PhD program I want, I'll have to use Fortran or C. My first choice project involves writing a linear scaling algorithm to compute large matrices of second derivatives (where large means you have ~105 or so rows/columns). In CUDA.

I know some CUDA, but I'm better at designing the algorithms than I am at implementing them.

CUDA is a gpu language... it is not very um... broadly usable. it is a sub set of c/c++ for a gpu after all.

C is fun, as i said just get pointers down and you are gold.

they can be sneaky

also on the bus ride home today i saw a little kid and told her there was a bird on the bus, cause the lady with the bird was on the bus. was expecting her to look at bird then sit with her parents.

nope

she was my bus buddy. we did some sudoku, read her some (most of the) comics, tried to teach her how to write the #2, she got better as the bus ride went on, while talking story with her dad about industry stuff off and on.

was weird to say the least

I know Smiley: tongue

I've somehow got more CUDA experience than plain C experience and I learned pointers that way, but it's annoying that my normal C/C++ isn't that great.

Gonna do that C++ coursework today, but after the first exercise the course seems to use some CERN variant. Which I need to manage to install somewhere first. It seems to be open access, at least. Smiley: lol

I still haven't gotten my super important e-mail. Smiley: mad

Also my baby tooth is loose and it hurts but I am too stubborn to just remove it, or get it removed.

One of my referees has not sent in his reference for my omg awesome dream PhD and the deadline is near. I bought some phone credit, called his PhD student and apparently he's just abroad till today. That's... good, I think.

Good that I had my labmate's mobile number. I am somewhat relieved now.

Iced Tea is good. Wait staff that hover over your cup to refill it after every sip not so much.

I like to threaten them by saying that each refill before the cup empties reduces their tip. Seems to work.

I do like big spreadsheets and such. What kind of company was it again? Are you guys in health care or more on the data end of things?
We're an engineering firm. Our main niche is identity management in a healthcare environment. We're currently expanding that to big data, as a solid MDM base helps a lot with that sort of analysis.

We don't use spreadsheets though, that's not quite big enough.

It REALLY looks like an Alien church. Or an insectoid church.

Or... one built by the Collectors...

Alien insectoid church.

The pillars are made to resemble trees in a kind of art deco style. Lots of other parts look like they're straight out of LotR.

That is pretty.

Also, Starbucks hot chocolate with hazelnut goes back and forth between "ugh, too sweet" and "mmmh, this is amazing" with every other sip.

I had starbucks coffee Saturday, it was pretty bad and incredibly overpriced. They also asked if I wanted it with gingerbread flavour or with caramel, I just want a cup of good cappuccino and I don't think that's too much to ask for €4 or whatever it cost.
#2844 Dec 12 2013 at 4:33 PM Rating: Good
Gingerbread latte can be really nice, but not from Starbucks. Everything they make is either ****** or bordering on too sweet (or sometimes actually just tastes like watery warm sugar, ugh).

If I'm getting something flavored, I just get it with half syrup.

That is a good plan.

In other news, I feel like my brain is falling out. Like I just spent 3 minutes trying to figure out what colour sodium fluoride should be (it's colourless). Also I am terrified because I've neglected applying to any "safe choice" sort of grad programmes. There is no reason to be terrified.

Also, I've done a lot of wrong maths over the past 2 days. At least I'm aware of it?

You've been on this alien insect church thing for a few now. Is there something you're not telling us?

With me eating low carb, the only thing I get at starbucks anymore is a blonde coffee with heavy whipping cream and sugar free syrup. I don't think I could even drink a real flavored latte these days. That's one of the cool things about this diet, is it totally reboots your taste for sweet things. Hell, Powerade Zero tastes too sweet to me. I figured this out when I was sick around Thanksgiving. I like drinking sports drinks when I'm sick.

Starbucks have now closed 3/4 of their stores in Australia as most cities in Australia already have numerous cafes selling quality coffee all over the place. So many people I talk to who visit the US have trouble finding decent coffee anywhere. Starbucks is so ubiquitous there that it forces most decent coffee places to struggle. Over here we already had lots of quality places so Starbucks just got no traction.

#2850 Dec 13 2013 at 2:24 AM Rating: Good
In England, Starbucks is mostly a London thing. Most other towns either have Costa (which is marginally better) or proper coffee places.

I once spent a weekend in Cambridge just kind of going from independent coffee shop to independent coffee shop. Fun times. Smiley: lol

I've heard good stuff about Australia with this stuff, too.

Edit: but Scotland is dreadful. We can either have canteen coffee, or Starbucks, or the stuff from the vending machines. There's some coffee somewhere in the biology building but I've not looked into it. And the canteen is really far away.

There is also a library coffee shop but the library is even farther and it genuinely seems to be really bad.

Starbucks is unfortunately growing here, although it's still only at airports and train stations where all it has to compete with are the cheaper but possibly even worse mini shop stands. Then again, it's doing so well that at Utrecht central station they opened a second Starbucks a whopping 50 meters from the first one (although there are also 3 of the same book/magazine store and 2 of the same mini supermarket within 100 meters of each other).

I still can't stand the air of misguided pretentiousness about the whole place though, what's wrong with just listing the size of your cups instead of using fake authentic terms like venti and grande? Some of the people ordering there just fill all the stereotypes too... there was a French girl ordering after us at the airport and she spent a good 5 minutes ordering 3 drinks.

Edit: Kali, do as the locals do and just drink Scotch instead. Or play a round of golf to annoy Andrew.
