I've been on a serious anime music binge recently. Attack on Titan and FLCL are my big ones, with some Cowboy Bebop thrown in.

I really like Bebop's variety. The Seatbelts (the group that did a lot of the music) have at least one song from what seems like pretty much every genre there is - or at least, as much as you can have minus words.

The cowboy bebop soundtrack album is a pretty cool album, not usually a style of music I like but they make it work on that album.

And for any poor fool not yet aware of the music:

I keep seeing people rave about Attack on Titan, but I couldn't find I had any desire to keep watching after the first episode.

Not really my thing and too bad it's all synths but aside from that it's pretty nice and relaxed.

And if we're sharing music, this is what I'm listening to at the moment.

Human civilization was pushed to the brink by the appearance of the titans - massivem uncommunicative humanoids who eat humans (for some reason).

The sum of mankind now lives in one walled-in city state (three consecutive circles). But then a titan so large that it can break down that wall appears. Queue fight for final survival, horrible realizations about the origins of Titans, etc.

I'd go find a version with a sexy man but I'm too lazy so you'll have to do it yourself.

Pretty good summary. However, things don't really go as you expect. For example, in episode 5, the main character get eaten.

I'm not going to lie, the series isn't as good as the Tumblr crusaders would have you believe, but it's still pretty good. The art is stylized to some extent, but the choreography and visuals in the action sequences are pretty flippin' good, the mystery atmosphere of the Titans and their origins has me hooked, and the music is phenomenal too.

Where is falls flat is the characterization, I feel. There are some pretty good conflicts in the series, like questioning at what point the cost for victory is too great, and what is the worth of a life, but these are broader issues than the individual ones the characters struggle with. The three main characters are your usual Power Trio trope of two guys and a girl sticking together until the end, where one is the brains, one is the best fighter, and the lead pretty much just has spirit and a drive to win. Then you have side characters like the distant "lone wolf" girl and the guy who just joined the military for an easier life protecting the inside of the walls int he military police. I usually find these characters more interesting than the main three, which is awesome because we get to spend a lot of time with them and away from the three main characters.

There are a ton of characters in this series, but that's because anyone can and will die at a moment's notice. The series is kind of a weird mix between action and horror, and there are periods where it goes full-on horror fight-for-survival mode and periods where things almost seem hopeful and maybe people will come out of this ok. The fights matter, and almost every conflict feels like it could be the last for the protagonists.

If I had to describe the series, it would be a strange mix between Bleach and Madoka Magica. It's technically shonen, but not your typical shonen, and the presentation is strong enough that I'm a fan even despite the flaws. I do care about the characters even though I said I had issues with the characterization, but I think that is more because we can't spend too much time on any individual character. We get to know them, and then have to move on to more important events. The music and the action sequences are among some of the best I've seen in anime, with the characters flying through the air and spinning flawlessly. The production value here is obviously pretty high.

All in all, the series is set up to be the next Death Note.

Yeah, tumblr seems to believe it's the greatest anime ever. I can't help but feel that the Death Note comparison is a good one. After all, Death Note is amazing if you only consider 2/3 of it, and atrocious if you're going all the way to the end.

Honestly, I just found the initial cast uninteresting and the concept wasn't enough to change that. Loud, obnoxious main character isn't really something I have a tolerance for anymore. I tried starting Fairy Tail last week, but the main character was an instant turn-off for me.

To be fair, it's also not really my genre. There have been times I've enjoyed horror, but it's not generally my go-to. In general, I only like horror if it's highly character-driven, like Blood+ or Death Note.

Did my gig and we just blow the roof up! It was my first experience after 30 years of playing. My son was awesome and they gave me lots of latitude in choosing the songs. I really enjoyed the experience and the crowd had a good time I think.

The crowd responding and dancing was such a rush (about 75), my son told me it was the best show he did so far, and it made me feel good. The old man was doing old style blues and rock and killing the harmonica, what a night!

Never enough until your heart explodes out of your chest and completes a 25k.

As far as Shingeki no Kyojin / Attack on Titan, it's pretty much standard shounen. The manga started off okay, but it's devolved into the standard power creep, where certain abilities start off rare and then suddenly it's rare when people don't have said certain abilities. I guess if I were to describe it, it'd be a zombie story with giants and super powers. I don't get the love affair the internet is having with it either. Maybe it's because everything else this season is kind of crap. Except maybe Watamote.

I may work for an alcohol and addictions research center, but that is still generally frowned upon.
