[Mage] How much dps is good enough :: World of Warcraft

Hi there. I am wondering how do you measure you dps and damage - boss by boss, on average for a dungeon, something else? I find it difficult to gather if I am doing okay or need more work on my rotation and overall strategy. I am a fire mage with 372 ilvl and on a raid target dummy my dps is around 12k. Is that low? What can I do to make it better? Thanks.

Well, first off, target dummies are more for practicing your rotation than getting an accurate idea of what your raid dps is going to be like. You're missing buffs you wouldn't normally have, and that is going to affect your dps some. 12k though is pretty bad at your gear level though. =/ I'm not an expert at fire mage, but try to describe what it is you do for a rotation and I"ll see if I can give you some tips. Also keep in mind though, Fire really shines in multi-target situations because of their awesome AoE. They still do pretty good single target dps, but not near as good as their AoE.

First I put Living Bomb on the target, fire a Scorch, a Fireball, a Pyro if I'm lucky to have Hot Streak proc-ed and then Combustion, new Living Bomb (if needed) and keep spamming Fireball and Fireblast + Pyro and LB when needed.

Assuming there have been no major changes in the couple months: Avoid fireblasts when not cleaving DoTs or moving with no hot streak. The most important things for boss DPS is to ensure that you get fairly good Combustions and to make sure that you're always casting if possible. There's a mod that's fairly helpful for the combustion(Combustion Helper, I think it's called).
