Hey guys. I have enjoyed 4.3 so far and the 5 mans are really great. I've been wanting to jump into the new raid but have a question. I've looked a bit on EJ but I wanted to ask the locals on here their thoughts. What is the current best spec for hunter raiding? I have heard all three are decent. I've been using SV for the aoe damage in 5 mans. Is the difference between SV and Marks and/or BM a large enough to warrant a change? Thanks in advance.

Try getting intimate with female dwarf.

I haven't played WoW in ages now so I honestly don't know about specs but playing around with Female Dwarf will get you all the info you want.

As far as I know from the people who do mass combat log analysis, MM is still ahead. But not by far enough anymore that you're gimping your raid by going SV or BM - and definitely by far enough that you can just respec and upgrade your damage without getting as comfortable with MM as you were with your old spec.

Femaledwarf says that for me, upgrading one piece of non-tier 378 to non-tier 397 is about 300dps (the 365 gun to the 378 gun is more like 500). So one gear upgrade would make up at least most of the difference between specs.

I'm at a loss as to which spec I prefer.

On one hand, I really like Aimed and Chimera Shot, but I'm not too crazy about the complexity of the rotation (although I've gotten a grasp on it lately, pushing 20k DPS on bosses in this gear). The Survival rotation just seems a lot smoother and the mastery provides some great synergy with the other abilities you have.

My main issue with Marksmanship is probably Improved Steady Shot. Sometimes you just have to use an emergency ability in between two Steady Shots and it breaks the combo and the buff then falls off before you can get two more shots in.

Plus, I miss not having Wyvern Sting in 5-mans.

Thanks for the replies. It's good to hear that all three are atleast Somewhat competitive. And I agree, Maz. I just feel like the MM rotation isn't as smooth as SV. And to be honest I love seeing my screen explode with huge numbers when I multi-shot/explosive trap with SV. Thanks again guys.

I went back to Survival and holy sh*t the new Explosive Shot is powerful.

Also, being a Survival Hunter, I can finally tame a Cunning class pet without feeling like a gimp. I'm in love with the colors on this wind serpent.

Manly in love, of course. Smiley: um

I totally agree about the feel of the SV "rotation". Even when I dual-specced to solo old raids, I didn't go all the way to MM, just swapped a bunch of points from damage to survivability but stayed SV.

It's funny and maybe i'm the only one, but I have always preferred MM over SV. I have been playing MM since early Wrath so i'm sure that has something to do with it. I guess I havn't felt the need to try to learn SV since I have been so comfortable as MM. I had gotten pretty comfortable with the Aimed shot focus dump, but I do agree that improved steady shot can get a little annoying. I am having a bit of a problem figuring out exactly which focus dump to use now with the t13 2-piece bonus. When I get to the 4-piece i'm going to have to switch to Arcane. For what it's worth here is my hunter.

Never! I'm way too curious to not click a link, even if I know, or strongly suspect, that the link won't lead to anything but tears.

Not meaning to derail the current derailment but i've been trying to figure some stuff out for my hunter and figured I would just post here instead of a new topic.

Anyway with the new gear and new teir bonuses i've been trying to work out some stat values. Here is my hunter right now and as you can probably tell right away I have a crap ton of haste. This has brought along a few problems with it.

Until not to long ago have been using Aimed Shot for my focus dump and it was working quite well. Since starting DS and getting the 2-piece teir bonus I have started to shift over the Arcane instead. The double focus regen has made the Aimed Shot rotation pretty focus inefficent. That along with more movement for the most part in DS Arcane has felt better. DPS wise on the target dummy me and my GM (also a hunter) have worked out both of them are about even with each other.

I have ran the numbers on femaledwarf and in my current gear set it values haste at more than double crit or mastery. I'm assuming femaledwarf wants me to push for the next haste soft cap. My problem with that is with switching to an Arcane focus dump I don't see a need to. I read somewhere that it's better to try to get haste down to the 1250 haste soft cap for an Arcane spam. I have also seen some inconsistency with crit and mastery values on different sites. Femaledwarf for example gives mastery a higher value than crit. It is my understanding that crit outweighs mastery.

TL;DR- When switching from and Aimed Shot to Arcane focus dump what is the value of haste compared to crit/mastery?

I don't play MM anymore, so I can only tell you the obvious:

Haste is primarily stacked to reduce the cast time of Steady Shot to 1.5 seconds. After this has been achieved, further stacking is done to reduce the cast time of Aimed Shot. If you're no longer using Aimed Shot, the need to stack haste above the breakpoint where Steady Shot takes 1.5 seconds to cast would no longer be there.

You could argue that more haste also increases focus regen and faster auto-shots would proc Wild Quiver more often, but I doubt it would be worth more than crit or mastery.

I'd say reforge haste into crit and mastery if you're switching from Aimed Shot to Arcane Shot.

Alternatively, go Survival and never worry about haste again. Smiley: tongue

Assuming that you've taken Aimed Shot out of the priorities on FemaleDwarf it should take into account that you don't need haste for Aimed Shots anymore so if you've done that and FemaleDwarf is still telling you to stack haste there's either something wrong with FemaleDwarf (small chance but possible) or you should stack more haste.

Should I have to remove Aimed Shot entirely or move it under Arcane in the priority list? I do have it set under the "Aimed Shot Behavior" section as "instant only" so I thought that would take care of that.

That sounds about right, remember that I haven't played WoW since februari or so so my info isn't very reliable. You can always check EJ as well.

Captin,

From what I've heard what you said sounds about right. Unless you're under a haste buff like heroism you just want to use aimed shot when it procs. Otherwise you use arcane shot as your focus dump.
