Best Spec for DPS DK?Follow

#1 Aug 15 2011 at 1:58 PM Rating: Decent
I'm currently blood, but folks keep telling me that Frost is the way to go. I don't want to tank, just be a DPS guy.

Any suggestions? Don't want to search over 50 pages of threads <G>

Uh, blood is a tanking tree, not a dps tree. You can go Unholy or Frost.

If you want to DW, your only option is Frost. If you want to use two-handers, you can use either.

Are you still leveling or at cap?

Yeah, we're not in Wrath anymore. If you want to DPS you have to go with either Frost or Unholy. Currently at 85, Frost DW is the best DPS, with Frost 2H close behind. Unholy is only useful for certain utility if your raid doesn't already possess said utility.

That's depressing--Frost sucks.

Well granted this is just what I've been told by other people in my guild, according to the guide on the o-boards, Unholy is still good, it's just not as good as frost. I like frost though, burst damage is fun. It's easy yeah, but at least it isn't as mind numbing as an arcane mage.

Lol, my comment was entirely about frost's fun factor. I don't find RNG-dependent classes fun. I'm fine if there's RNG components, of course--I think that makes them better. But when the RNG can destroy your damage, it's just not fun for me...

I mean, Frost isn't even interesting when everything goes well. Diseases up, move on. RP capped? Then Frost Strike. If you don't have a Rime proc, Oblit. Then FS. Nothing? HoW.

That's just boring. And it's so dependent on RE and procs, which makes it annoying rather than complex.

Granted I haven't tried Unholy since Cata hit, but the DK in my guild's progression group told me that Unholy is a lot more annoying to play. *shrugs* I don't mind a little RNG, and Frost doesn't seem to be too bad in that department, although I'll admit I'm still getting the hang of it. I do seem to have trouble getting my DPS above 15k in a raid, but that could be entirely my own fault. I also don't seem to mind classes that are a bit on the boring side, as long as I don't play them frequently. I still detest playing Arcane on my mage, because it's so boring and I played it for a year and a half in Wrath. I don't know that'd I want to play a frost DK as my main, but I enjoy it as an alt.

I like Arcane because it fuses a priority system with a rotation. You need to be using your proper runes without heed to random procs, but you also need to watch your ghoul and change your DC habits according to what's going on.

More interesting to me than Frost's 3-ability system.

You don't really need a guide to level. But generally speaking, you'll want to put your diseases up and then just Oblit and Frost Strike to your heart's content. Use Death Strike when you need healing. You might want to glyph Howling Blast.

If you wanted to see a spec, you can check mine in my sig. I have the one recommended by EJ (well, at least when I spec'ed it originially it was anyways). I don't think anything has really changed much.

If you wanted to go 2H Frost, you'd drop Threat of Thassarian for Might of the Frozen Wastes.

Actually, for leveling you don't need to bother with diseases. Stuff dies too fast. This is what I used for leveling, via http://deathknightbuilds.com/. It was a lot of fun. Smiley: grin

I wouldn't necessarily trust that site for stuff at 85 (or at least, take it with a grain of salt), but for leveling that build was great.

You can get off three Obliterates if you don't apply diseases and an additional Obliterate does more damage than a Howling Blast plus the additional damage to the Obliterate (because of the disease).

I recommend glyphing Howling Blast anyway, for AOE stuff. Spamming Howling Blast will kill multiple mobs so fast.
