two questions:

1) I'm still a few levels from my third pet, but I'm not real happy with my second. I took a bear for tenacity, but most of the mobs simply blow past him and come for me. My kitty is awesome on damage, but sometimes you just need something defensive. Trouble is, as far as I can figure, "Dismiss Pet" only puts him to sleep and I still can't pick up a third (I want a turtle now that I'm where I can get one). How can I jut make the bear go away forever?

2) I'm trying PvP (Lvl 38 now) and I keep getting clobbered. When not in safe areas or flying, I've pretty much taken to skulking through the bush to avoid confrontations. somebody want tpo give me a tip or two on how a hunter can compete in random PvP encounters?)

To get rid of the bear permanently, right-click his portrait and select the option to abandon him. You might want to grab a spider for the web instead--that will keep the mobs in place for a bit as you kill them.

By PvP, do you mean a PvP server? It's been ages (like, since BC) since I did much leveling on one, but I do remember that you always want to keep up Humanoid and Hidden tracking. Folks with flying will probably still come out of nowhere, but you don't have much chance against them--this is to help with the ones closer to your level. You might also consider being more aggressive toward players near your level, as you're likely to have to deal with them eventually, and having the jump on them will definitely give you an advantage.

If your bear is constantly dropping aggro make sure that you have growl toggled on. You could also make a simple macro for misdirection, oh wow you don't get md until 76. Um, I would say make sure your bear is talented into threat abilities, though it seems like at 37, you only have like what 4-5 talent points for your pet at that time.

Basically all I can say is let your pet go in first and growl and get some aggro before you start blasting away. Or maybe try and learn to kite and see if you can kill mobs before they reach you.

Thank you most kindly for that tip. I decided on a spider instead of a turtle. Not only do I love him compared to the bear, but its Tres Cool striding through Stormwind with a big orange tarantula off leash!

Can Hunters keep multiple types of tracking up at the same time now? Smiley: dubious

Sigh, you new PvP players sure have it easy.

In case you didn't know already, you don't have to completely abandon a pet if you want a new one. There are stable masters in pretty much every city/town who can store up to 20 extra pets for you. You can leave your bear in the stable and take it back out later if you want. Many people have large pet collections and switch them around as needed.

Yep. You can track as many things as you want at the same time now.

It's awesome for just about everything... except when I forget I have herb tracking on, spot a yellow dot in a spirit beast's spawn point, and freak out until I realize my mistake. *grin* I do think there used to be macros to toggle quickly between tracking before, though--or was that only for profession tracking?

Yep - if you think you can sort out the meaning of a a rainbow of scores of dots in one little 1 1/2" circle.

I keep beasts and hidden on all the time, but toggle humanoids off in towns and camps and only hit undead, giants, elementals, etc in areas where they're significant.

Listen to isyris, she is correct.

Spider is awesome sauce for PvP. I use a cat for PvE. When I get my 3rd slot I'll grab a wolf for the crit buff.
