which professions to pickFollow

#1 May 24 2011 at 1:09 AM Rating: Decent
Hey there. My hunter alt isn't anywhere near being 85 (only 20), but I'm trying to plan out what professions I'd like to have on him when he does finally reach that cap one day. While leveling, I plan on choosing the gathering profession that goes best with the crafting profession plus one of the other two gathering professions to build up some gold. I was thinking of alchemy or jewelcrafting, and while they have awesome perks, everyone these days seems to have those professions, and I have that itch to do something a little different. Then I thought, "What about leatherworking?" and sure enough, the sticky (yes, I read it :P) said that it's the best single dps profession come end game. However, it was last updated in December 2010, and I was just wondering if that still holds true. Also, I was wondering how profitable and in demand leatherworking is? Is it going to be one of those professions that's useless to others and not sought after? Will I be able to make any sort of gold off it? Or should I just go with either alchemy or jewelcrafting, knowing that it's possible to make gold off of and is always needed by someone? I guess the main point is: will it be worthwhile for all the work and gold I'll put into it and will I see returns? Thanks for any help, and sorry for the massive block of text. :]

LW/JC is good.

You wont sell much of anything from LW, the bonuses are pretty sweet though, same idea with JC. LW has dropped back down a bit since they introduced +50 Int/Str/Agi to wrist enchants.

The likely hood of seeing returns from your professions is minimal.

Next time you post remember that Enter is your friend.

Haha yeah sorry about that. I was just reading a scientific article and I guess my brain got stuck in "big wall of text" mode.

This may depend on the server, honestly. The epics seem to sell pretty well here, and having access to a maxed LW has been great for getting guildies geared up (so we can go RP in troll dungeons, yes). It's not the most profitable profession, but there *is* demand for the gear.

And it doesn't feel as ****** as Blacksmithing. O hai der, expensive-to-craft blues that barely compare to Jewelcrafting greens!

Horsemouth, you said that the likelihood of seeing returns from professions is minimal. Does that mean jewelcrafting isn't nearly as profitable as it was back in wrath?

Isyris, I'm surprised people still want crafted gear. I assumed most would replace it with gear that drops from heroic or raids because it's either better or they want to save their gold.

I agree. On my server, competition has beaten the epics down to where it's not worth it unless you want to burn orbs on the assumption they'll be BoE soon and worth much less (although my experience has always been that BoE "things of crafting things" lowers the price of crafted epics and thus the profit per unit, but makes things more affordable, so you more than make up for it in volume). But the ilvl 339 gear still sells, albeit slowly, and I expect there will be a huge boom when the ilvl 359 PvP gear comes out with 4.2. Leg patches will always sell as long as there's new content, and sell well as long as there's a VoA-type boss that drops tier legs.

My hunter is LW/enchanting. Both reasonable income, competitive statwise, and it makes you self-sufficient for your own gear upgrades.

The gem market has collapsed on my server, Wrath gems sell for more and the average cut Cata gem sells for <50g usuallu closer to 30. The uncut JC daily gems sell for more sometimes than uncut rare quality gems.

Getting trade channel work still happens, I really haven't been doing it much as I'm still hoarding tokens for whenever they release epic gems.

The reason it sells, I think, is mainly because of people wanting to get an ilevel boost to be ready quickly for raids and heroics (especially the troll ones)--to replace questing greens and such. Gearing up through normals is a long and painful process, and when you're on your fifth alt sometimes it's more attractive to drop a couple thousand gold than to spend hours in Stonecore. Ugh, Stonecore. *shudders*

Well first off if you are only lvl 20, then DROP yer crafting pro's like a bad habbit asap... I JUST made the mistake
Of having skinning an LW... thought "ok I'm a hunter this will work for me to make my own stuff.) NOT!... I read some forums
Talked to my guild mates an 99% of them said drop LW NOW...(they actuallly made fun of me because I made such a
"NOOB" mistake... so I did an picked up mining ( I never really see places to mine up ok?) I started off with 18S (almost 19S)... so farm2ed for about an hour an put what I had on the AH, went to sleep an this morning I have 35G an some change... long story short for money at low levels, just don't get a crafting pro just yet. Wait till yer around LVL 50
Necro Warning: This post occurred more than thirty days after the prior, and may be a necropost.

I'm no expert, but if you want to just make lots of cash and buy your goodies, two gathering professions seem to be a much surer route to riches than production. Let the other guy make the potions and elixirs; you can get them when he has to dump them for pennies at the auction house. I have come to the conclusion that first aid makes a pretty good secondary, though. Bandages aren't much use in battle, unlike health potions, but they between fights they recover health a whole lot faster than food.

I'm about to max on skinning, but want to hang on for a while because its still a better gold-producer than herbs on my server. My minor is fishing, but just for fun. As I rise, though, I'm thinking of picking up enchanting - is that legit for a hunter?

I think enchanting is awesome for a Hunter. This is mainly due to the fact that you can reliably solo instance content. So you can make big bucks selling rare shards.

I may be misreading, but don't forget that Fishing/Cooking/First Aid/Archaeology aren't exclusive and everybody can max all of them. The only one of these I don't use regularly on my hunter is fishing, but it's maxed just in case.

That said, my hunter is an enchanter, and it's a good general-purpose profession, but there are a couple of extra hunter benefits. As has been mentioned, it goes well with extreme soloing and/or old-content soloing, giving you a choice whether to vendor or dust the drops you get. Also, there are times when you can synergize with leatherworking to create value where none existed before - e.g., early in WotLK, you could take (cheap) leather, craft pieces of the Arctic set, and disenchant them for (expensive) dust. All crafting professions have these opportunities - JC is the best at it, but LW can make it work because leather is cheaper than the ore BS use and more plentiful than the cloth tailors use.

Plus, enchanting is the only(*) crafting profession that (should be) free or profitable to level due to the ability to DE cheap greens for the mats you need and sell the scrolls/extra mats to pay for the next round of greens. Or you can farm your own.

(*) I actually made a profit out of JC, but I was lucky to be able to exploit prospecting in the same way as disenchanting, but that was definitely time-specific and server-specific. I don't think it could be done right now on most servers.
