With the recently announced changes to Frost - is fire still king?

I started WoW in TBC and have always hated fire. I don't like being tied to the RNG and I don't like the way it currently plays. (Pray for crits at the right time...)

Is frost poised to take the lead? Does Arcane have any hope? I know a lot of people hated Arcane in Wrath (AB Spam) and I have no opinion on it either way. I just don't like fire...
#2REDACTED, Posted: May 09 2011 at 6:28 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) ive always thought frost was kinda the "pvp spec" for mages

Yeah... Frost is PVP and it's also leveling spec. But with upcoming changes (a boost to frost) --- I want to know if Frost if PVE - tops/viable...

Frankly - we have lost a lot of mages in this forum - the best of whom (Anobix) was the person who'd normally answer this.

If you notice... roughly 3-4 of the top 10 posts were written by me - most/many of which are MONTHS old. Sadly the mage forum is somewhat dead....

It's not just here. Even Elitist Jerks doesn't seem to have a whole lot of discussion on recent and upcoming changes. And the oboards still isn't useful for much.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say that the game is dying, it certainly seems like outside discussion of certain aspects of the game has slowed.

As for the question itself: I honestly cannot say. There is little chatter suggesting anything beyond the personal experience of some folks as evidence that Frost or Arcane will be overtaking fire any time soon. Further, there is a bit of chatter here and there suggesting a current possible Arcane bug that might make Arcane even less viable ATM.

I'm not sure if there's any prohibition about mentioning other sites on this one, but here is my all time fave Mage site.

I'm sure you'll got some advice and help there on your question.

No prohibition, though people are quite jumpy about seeing links from folks they haven't gotten to know yet.

Now, I actually rather like Arcane Brilliance, but the author(s?) tends to be less quantitative and more qualitative in his approach to raid specs. Now, I could be wrong, but it seems to me that Borsuk was looking for a more quantitative answer.

Thanks for the replies.

I'll Check out the site (Work computer).

I tend to focus more on the Quant side... There are so many things that "Seem" to be DPS increases that are really not. I've been burned way to many times.

I agre with Pol - I'm not saying the game is/was dying, but there definately is a lack of discussion. I've resorted to following a few people in some of the top guilds and just checking their stats/gear/gems/etc...

Frost has certainly 'caught up' in PvE, as has Arcane.
I keep hearing murmers of "AoE = Fire, short fight = Arcane, Single target = Frost" but that's just hear-say.
I WILL tell you that frost is competitive, and before you have a lot of crit, I can CERTAINLY see it doing better than fire, but if you're at high gear levels, I'm pretty sure fire is still 'king' of DPS, if but by a few digits.

Allakhazam has definitely seen a drop in population since the early days. The fact that you can see year old threads on the front page of most forums is telling.

Someone posted this in my guild forums:

Simulationcraft for 4.1.0 (Live) for a Patchwerk fight in full 372 gear:
http://www.simulationcraft.org/410/Raid_T11_372.html

Now for Simulationcraft for 4.2.0 (PTR) for the same Patchwerk fight in full 372 gear
http://simulationcraft.org/420/Raid_T11_372.html

Our arcane mage tends to beat my **** most of the time, but not always by much, and sometimes I beat him, yay rng. He's glad to have competition from a fire mage, though, because he didn't before he came to our guild.

I'm sticking with fire until I can't get by with it anymore, because the whole idea of arcane ***** with my head as it is right now. But our resident arcane mage has made a nice tutorial post for me for when/if I'm ready. I like having frost as my OS for dailies/farming. Anyway, the best part of his post mentions an addon that will reforge your gear in one fell swoop, sort of like an outfitter type thing.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/reforgesaver.aspx

Makes it a LOT easier to switch specs from one boss to another.
Necro Warning: This post occurred more than thirty days after the prior, and may be a necropost.

That addon sounds kinda awesome.

Yeah it does. Probably won't be useful for me since I don't tend to switch specs around that much as a hybrid, but it's a really neat idea for the "pure" dps classes that have different trees that are better at different things.

I never would have imagined an addon like that... Very nice.
