I just wonder what playstyle they see being bad that they are trying to adjust for. I am too low level to really understand I guess. (only level 59)

They are trying to prevent disc priests from bubble spamming. That's throwing bubbles on everyone and just keeping them refreshed on all party members. They don't want you using PW:Shield so much that you rarely use other spells. In the next patch they will wear off in half the time and cost more mana. If you try to mostly bubble spam, you will go OOM.

But instead of using logic to try and figure out what to do with Disc, they're just going "Ooooooo, let's try this!" and seeing what happens.

Don't be silly, people, WE ARE NOT NERFING SHIELD AT ALL THE SPEC IS STILL THE SAME AS IT ALWAYS WAS LA LA LA WE DON'T HEAR YOU.

Quote:
We want Power Word: Shield, Power Word: Barrier, and Divine Aegis to continue to be an important part of a Discipline priest's rotation. We want you to use those spells frequently. The changes we've made through hotfixes and those that we currently have planned for 4.1. aren't intended to remove that element of gameplay at all, but simply refine it and bring it more in line with our design goals for the spec as a whole.

Thread.

I'm finally catching on to the fact that they give this quite reasonable explanation every time to make me feel better, but that it actually has no relationship to reality. I never spammed shield in the first place. These nerfs have gone well beyond making sure I can't spam it.

Essentially they're trying to make sure shield is no better or different than any other tool in the box, like Circle of Healing, or Beacon of Light, something that adds flavor to the spec without overpowering it. The trouble there is, if you're going to build the spec and its mastery around one spell, that spell cannot be the same as every other spell; it has to be special. Special does not mean it's the only spell people cast, but it does mean, yanno, special. They're probably right that shield is too important right now; but breaking shield is not the answer if you're not going to change the underlying structure. All that does is break disc.

If it's so impossible to balance shield so it has elevated importance without being spammable, then hey, here's a thought, make the disc mastery work with other stuff! Divine Aegis is lovely and all, but it's not that useful to me personally when I'm not able to stack crit in meaningful amounts with the current gear. If this is the mitigation spec, then howzabout PW:S isn't the only thing that mitigates? Add a little absorption to other heals, the way holy's masatery adds a little HoT to other heals. Or add a couple more shieldy spells in various degrees of efficiency. I'm pretty sure there are other ways to do it besides... this.

Seriously--it's just getting absurd.

Don't want Disc using shields any more than other specs? Fine. But don't just nerf the shield and pretend like you don't have an issue because the entire design focus of the Disc tree was that... they'd be using shields more than other specs.

Why is that a difficult concept. The fact that blue posts are always just skating around the issue is what's so annoying.

Ah yes. I remember when they nerfed CoH. That's when I left Holy after playing it for 65 levels.

The difference though is that there was no mastery back then. I haven't got so much mastery right now that it matters, but this whole idea of it, the whole thing with the summary showing up first on the talent tree, and choosing who you want to be first and having the spec flow from there, means they want each spec to have a unified theme and to be built around that. And suggests to me that there will only me more mastery-related or mastery-like factors down the line.

But at the same time they've been homogenizing like crazy for fear that raids will insist on having x class and y spec, and if anything jumps up that's unique or special, they kill it.

So... you want each spec to be unique, but you want them all to be able to do the same stuff? Um.

Not that any of this is surprising. At the end of the day Blizzard is still a corporation. There's no reason they should be more exempt from Office Space thinking than anybody else.

Teacake, I am with you on this one. As we can not do much, I think we need to sit back, put on some rose-colored glasses and drink wine with Dadanox. Do you want the Merlot or the Pinot Noir?

I don't need to drink myself happy, I've got my holy spec for that. ;)

I actually think that Disc will still be fun to play. They will probably just change the Mastery to increase the healing done by smite, then reduce the casting time on Smite, and you know... probably up the damage.

Just Saying is all...
