Has anyone taken a look at the current Cata trees and really thought out a Prot build. I saw that Anobix has looked into it on the mage forum...
I started looking into it and it doesn't appear that you can do certain things...
For example you need, on the wowhead site http://cata.wowhead.com/talent#s to apparently max out your Prot tree before you can put any points into either holy or Ret.
This has a few questions-
1. Can a leveling Paly pick up 5 points in Ret, then drop the next 5 in Prot, etc...
2. Do I have to take Avengers Shield in order to start picking up Ret talents? (Please don't point out that no one would do this - i'm just messing around - I realized it when I noticed that Divini Storm was effectively an 11 point talent on the Ret Tree and I was considering the fun possibilities of DS as a tank...
So is this just the functionality of the site - or is this something new that I'm not aware of?
Also - if anyone has a Prot build - please post it.

the changes in cata mean you have to pick a tree and you are then locked into that tree until you spend 31 points in that tree.
so to answer your questions

2. avengers shield, unless i am mistaken which i might be, is a prot spec bonus. cant get it as a ret.

Anything 11 points into your non-main tree is impossible for you to ever get.

No. Blizzard took this ability away. Instead, you choose a tree and are locked into dropping 31 points into it before you can sub-spec. In addition, you get some non-talented abilities associated with choosing a tree. In the case of prot, that's Avenger's Shield, Touched by the Light, Judgments of the Wise, and Mastery: Divine Bulwark (increases block %).

Well, in general you can't take 11 points in a subspec (you have 41 points and MUST put 31 of them into your primary tree). Keep in mind that Avenger's Shield is not the 31 point talent though (that's Last Sta ... er Ardent Defender). There's no need to pick up AD, but you'd be crazy not to. Either way, there's no possible way to get Crusader Strike with a Prot spec in Cata.
I'm not sure if there are any final builds yet. I know there was some hubbub on the official forums because of a build that focuses on Word of Glory (self-heal) as a primary way to build threat ...
But we don't seem to have a conversion from STR to SP. I think that most of my damage comes from Consecrate, HoR, and maybe SoR. (and of course SoC)
If I recall correctly, back in the day (Prior to my actually playing wow - I joined in late TBC) the oly Paly tanks used SP weapons/gear. They needed SP - it was only in the Wrath re-make of the talent trees that we got the STR to SP conversion.
What does this mean going forward? Am I going to look for SP? Will all of my current T9/10 gear be gimped because I have STR on it and that no longer converts??? Will I be using healer gear?
