... ***** it, I'm trying again.Follow

So I'm thinking of coming back to WoW. I have a dozen characters or so, but the one I'm primarily thinking of playing is my Rogue. Now, I used to be slightly elitist. I used to be of that 'I can squeeze out two more dps... it's going to cost me a few thousand, but I can do it' school when it came to PvE, and not too far off that in PvP.

But it's kind of amazing, really. I've lost all touch with the class(es) and I have no idea what's what anymore.

Is there any chance of someone bothering to sum up the important Rogue changes since early Wrath up until now? Used to be decent with two different Mutilate speccs, one for Raid PvE and one for PvP (and world solo PvE), but I think I'm faaar behind. Just reading the patch notes gives me a headache as I can't remember the conclusions made before that, and there's too many of them to do the analysis of them all in the short time I have before I start playing again.

Anyone able? Oh, and Theo? Get your old House avatar with the tongue back. It was funnier.

Well, to sum it all up in a really easy way: **** got simpler. They changed hunger for blood, then they changed it again, and then they changed it some more. Assassination PvE should be even more straightforward for you than it was when you left.

Sub PvE has also been buffed, but it's not really a good choice for raids yet - with some luck it might be in Cata.

As for combat... I think there was something about combat being better DPS than Assa when your gear is right, but Theo should be able to point that out if it's significant.

Er, I don't pay much attention to PvE anymore, since I don't have too much interest in it after the snoozefest that was Naxx (second time through Naxx is f'king BORING).

PvP is pretty simple: at low gear levels, spec mutilate. If you've got insane gear, spec ShD and /rofl as you ShD-burst someone's face off.

Couple variations on the mutilate spec, but basically most people use Evenom as a finisher with the change to Master Poisoner. I hate Envenom and Deadly Poison, so I spec two variants of PvP mutilate based on Evis.

I like this House avatar better, FYI. I don't think I even still have the old one.

Oh, and it's super easy to get geared for PvP. It took me like two weeks of grinding WG and BGs.

Well, looks like I might be able to just dive right back in then. The speccs are still there, so no major changes requiring respeccs apparently, but I'll check out what's what when it comes to cookie-cutters these days.

Sigh.

I'm going to have to go catch up on all the stuff on EJ, aren't I?

Main reason I'm not doing any PvE at the moment. I'll keep up with EJ when 4.0/Cata arrive.

Might as well ressurect this than make a new thread.

... I hate trying to find out how long my SnD is lasting. I hate trying to find out whether my target's got a bleed running. Both the stock UI and the current addons I'm using absolutely utterly suck at this. Anyone know of a good addon for Rogues to keep HfB, SnD, Rupture and so on easily viewable in one location?

If you ask me, I'd say use PowerAuras for that...

Personally, I use DoTimer.
#10 Sep 13 2010 at 3:25 PM Rating: Good
Been fiddling with DoTimer. While it's good at what it does, I can't figure out how to make a separate timer bar set for the important things. SnD and HfB all get hidden in the giant list of buffs. (And that's just five-mans, I shudder to think how long that list goes in raids) Guess I just need to read the documentation... *sighs*

... I hate to rtfm.

Type /dot.

In the general options, click the "White List" box.

Under "Filters" it will have a text box with a dropdown button next to it.

Type in what you want to show (needs to be exact, such as Deadly Poison IX, but don't need stack numbers), and you're good to go.

So for raiding as mutilate, you'd probably want Deadly Poison IX, Hunger for Blood, Slice and Dice, Rupture, Garrote, Sap, Distract, and maybe one or two more.

Icehud

Allows you to make custom bars and timers for various buffs and debuffs.

Try assassin timer for your various roguey buffs/debuffs/CPs. It's ghetto as hell, but so clear and obvious that I have a hard time playing without it now. I use IceHud for my personal "unit frame", and I have it set up to tell me HfB, SnD, Env, but I'm so addicted to assassin timer, I tend to only look at icehud for hp and energy.

As for what's new in PvE, I don't know b/c I wasn't playing a rogue at the beginning of wolk. But to sum up current status, Mozared put it well. It's wicked simple. The easiest way to tell if there's a bleed up is whether your HfB button is lit up or darkened. Honestly if you don't have a feral or warrior in your raid keeping a bleed up, it's annoying to the point that it's almost not worth it to go mut. The vast majority of the time you won't be thinking about whether SnD is up b/c Env refreshes it.

Generally speaking, Combat competes with Mut on a straight tank-n-spank when you're >1000 arpen. On any fight with lots of target switching or aoe, combat can steal the edge with way less than that. All assuming equal "skill".

Not sure if you're looking for gem advice, but it's hit/exp to cap, then AP, AP, AP. Yellow sockets you can go AP/Haste (or AP/hit, if you're not hit capped) to get the bonus. Eventually the spreadsheets will start tweaking your gems to balance haste and AP, to the point where you might need a Quick King's Amber or two.

You should be specific what cap you're talking about, especially for rogues that raided in TBC.

White cap or yellow cap?

Rogue power bars are > than all.

I've used them for years and they help me maximize my dps well. Not to mention, quartz is also a good addon as well.

Muta PvE is highest raid dps, but like many have said, it doesn't really matter with cata around the corner, and I would suspect that many specs and roles will change once we hit 85. However, those few mods will continue to be in my bag of tricks so long as a play my rogue, and I might add that rogue power bars works for a few other classes a well =)

Don't necrobump a 3 month old thread that was made prior to 4.0.1, dumbass.

He didn't even answer in the form of a question, which really derailed the derail.

Disappoint...
