Short version: You're still an absorbtion healer, you just might need to know what the other buttons do.

Some of you guys can be so extreme sometimes. :) Less emphasis on shields doesn't have to mean never, ever cast shields. Your mastery doesn't have to be junk just because you cast actual heals sometimes.

A typical Icecrown Disc priest today might have a healing breakdown that looks something like this:

40% Power Word: Shield
35% Divine Aegis
8% Glyph of PW:S
7% Prayer of Mending
4% Divine Hymn
2% Flash Heal
1% Penance
3% Other

Imagine that instead of 75% shields, you do 50-60% shields and the rest is made up by Flash Heal, Heal, Greater Heal and Penance. So instead of doing most of your healing, shields are down to doing only a majority of your healing. :)

I have zero issue with this. I don't know what it's like in the higher end content, but in five mans and PVP I can count on one hand the number of direct heals I cast in an hour. Mainly it's Shield, PoM, then either DPS or /dance. In a battleground healing meter (doesn't count absorption), I'm often behind a warlock or two. And it's not like I'm doing a crappy job. People aren't dying around me. Shield is just that definitive of my spec. I'm cool with becoming a Priest first and Disc second rather than the other way around.

I don't have this very often, but I can 100% see where he's coming from, why he is saying it, and why it makes sense. I also 100% agree with him. His healing breakdown for my IcC priest is pretty much completely correct. And after playing some Cata beta, I see completely where they're going with this. Healing is a lot more similar to how it was in vanilla, and all cata basically means is that you're no longer spamming PW:S. The whole 50-60% shields and the rest heals thing is spot on.

My only concern right now is that they're taking this great execution for disc priest and trying to transpose it on the other 'predictive healing' class (resto druid), and I'm not sure it'll work so well for them.

Divine Aegis absorbs twice as much damage as we heal? Huh what? It’s awesome, but it’s not THAT awesome.

I've pondered that before, as it HAS ended up like that in my logs. I think the queue is overhealing.

Think about it. Your main heals as disc should be Penance, Flash Heal, ProM and PoH. How many of those constantly overheal for at least 1/3d of their respective healing? All of them, for me.

Huh. I’m probably too focused on PVP priestification...overhealing in PVE is a good idea given the current state of our mana pools, but overhealing in PVP means I’m wasting GCDs that could be used dispelling, CCing or DPSing.

Well, if it's PvP you're talking about, meters matter jack all. You use what is best for the situation, and in PvP the situation is always changing.
