Hey there,

So recently i went from holy paladin to protection and im building a nice tank set. Have the DEF cap around 35k HP Unbuffed and think im ready to start tanking ICC.
There is just one thing im worried about, when studying tanks in ICC i hear some people /Yell TAUNT TAUNT TAUNT, Now does that mean as a Paladin i should use Hand of reckoning? What if it misses? Also how do people indicate when to taunt using "Stacks"? if anyone could explain using an example like Deathbringer or another boss it would be greatly appreciated.
For the Horde!

Thank you :)

Firstly, get the Righteous Defense Glyph. Solves any problems with taunts without having to sacrifice mitigation/stamina/avoidance to reach the hit cap. I usually use HoR when taunting single targets. The little bit of damage is always good since lots of tanks continue to melee and can inadvertently repull aggro before allowing you to establish aggro.

As far as the stacks thing goes it is very situational on the boss fight. The debuff that stacks can vary like applying a bleeding dot(Gormok in ToC), reduce healing(Gluth in Naxx), increase damage taken(Kologarn Armor debuff) or simply kill the tank once hitting a certain amount of stacks (Re Festergut or Iron Council HM).

For example, the two mini Gluth (re Naxx) dog bosses, Precious and Stinky in Plague Wing of ICC, put a stacking mortal strike type debuff on the tanks that requires a second tank to pull so that the debuff stacks can fall of. It's important that the tanks swap otherwise when Decimate hits the tank will be unable to recover any health (the debuff can stack to 100%). There are lots of bosses like this throughout WoW. Toravon in VoA (taunt at usually 4 stacks), Festergut (8-9 stacks), Prof Putricide (Phase 3), Sindy (Phase 3) to name just a few. Best to read up on these or get a tank to give you a run down before giving them a shot.

As far as the yelling goes that is usually when the primary tank is reaching a critical amount of stacks and has started fearing for their own life(repairs and wipe) after having blown their cooldowns.

Deathbringer requires tanks to taunt very quickly otherwise he will get quite a bit of runic power from hitting the tank with the Mark.

On Deathbringer Saurfang, he casts a spell call Rune of Blood, which debuffs his current tank. Any attacks that tank receives causes Saurfang to be healed. The other tank has to taunt IMMEDIATELY. You should be watching action timer bars from DBM or DXE or Bigwigs or whatever else you use to know exactly when it's casted, so you can taunt right away.

Also, set the other tank as your Focus target so you can see his debuffs.

On a fight like Lady Deathwhisper or Toravon the Ice Watcher, the current tank receives multiple "stacks" of a debuff, and you can see how many by the debuff tooltip on your focus target frame. When it gets too high, you need to taunt.

As a paladin, you have Hand of Reckoning, and Righteous Defense. Both taunt just as well, but you should probably use HoR first to get into the habit of it. You don't want to accidentally taunt more than just the one target on fights with adds.

Both of your taunts count as spells, and require 17% hit to always work on bosses. You'll almost always be fine with the standard 8% hit for melee (which is 10% or 11% for spells), but there's also the Glyph of Righteous Defense for another 8% hit for both of your taunts, giving them a 100% success rate if you're melee hit-capped.

So with a 100% Success rate in taunt i should always pull hate when taunting? Regardless of threat?. For example im dual tanking a boss and the 2nd tanks hate is significantly higher than mine, he asks me to taunt i do so and will ALWAYS make the mob attack me regardless of threat?
If that is so then perfect that is something i was worried about, that the other tank would have too much hate and my taunt wouldnt be strong enough to pull the boss away from them.

Thank you for the input/answers so far :)

When you successfully land a taunt your hate/threat just overtakes the person on top of the threat list. If you don't keep attacking or can't generate as much threat as that person they will overtake you again and the mob will go back to attacking them. You are still required to spam your 969 rotation to keep ahead of them, especially if the other tank is unaware that you have taunted and is actively mashing their own rotation. Using the glyph does not guarantee it will land (it gives your taunts +8% hit) and if by some chance it does miss then just use your Righteous Defence taunt.

If by some phenomenon that misses or the boss goes immune to taunts throw a Hand of Protection on the other tank. It will force the boss to attack the player second highest on threat which, on a single target boss fight, should be you. The same goes for you if your co tank doesn't taunt. Hit Divine Shield then throw a Hand of Salvation on yourself. Be aware though that on a fight like Festergut that Divine Shield isn't a good option as you require one of the debuffs to decrease the amount of damage you take (the spore buff/debuff).
