Shield enhancement?Follow

I searched a bit but couldn't find any specific discussions on what to do with shields. I'm looking for some info on what to do with a shield at what levels.

Right now I have a prot. warrior at 43 and I put thorium shield spikes on my shield. Is this a noob thing to do? Should I be using something else like block rating enchant, armor enchant, stamina enchant, resistances, etc.?

Also on the note of shield spikes-- Does the block damage from the spikes add to threat levels like regular attacking damages or does it have any kind of reduced or increased threat? Seems like it would be nice if you're tanking a large group of mobs and the spike damage from them hitting you keeps adding threat between your normal abilities and CD's.

So for leveling as a tank what your suggest for shield enhancements? Then at 80 what would you use for heroic 5-mans and/or raiding?

I never used anything while leveling up, but at 80 the only "real" choices are either +18 stamina, or +20 Defense Rating. If you're crit immune, then go for stamina, and if you're not, then obviously go for Defense Rating.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but I see no reason why the damage from the shield spikes would cause less threat, I think it would just take the same threat modifiers as all your other abilities, like Defensive Stance, and Armsman once (if) you get it.

Edit: Forgot to add that shield spikes are generally a lot less useful after you get Critical Block near the bottom of the Prot tree.

There's really nothing to put on a shield other than spikes until you get a level 60 or higher shield for 18 stamina. If the spike deals physical damage, it gets all the same threat bonuses your attacks do.

But at 80, I prefer the 81 block value Titanium Plating.

I've never actually used them, although I suppose it would help at lower levels, assisting the threat you put out with Thunder Clap. I'll probably give them a bash now that I'm having to start all over again.

I can tell you at lvl 80 you should use the Titanium plating enchant, every pally and warrior tank in our guild uses that enchant.

I thought I had heard that shield spikes affected the damage of Shield Bash/Slam, but as those abilities have been reworked since LK's release, spikes have fallen sub-par.

With the Shield Block and talent changes in Cata, maybe spikes will be worth considering (again). Maybe.
