So last night i Entered ICC10 Man with 4.6K GS, Unbuffed i have about 21k Mana 2000 SP, Im a holy paladin with the talent tree 51 - 5 - 15 ( i think ill have to double check im at work atm ) So basicaly we managed to clear the first 4 bosses, wehhheyyyy :D.

The scenario, Basicaly i joined as tank healer (Raid healer on trash) and we had a disc priest as raid healer, she/he was amazing they could have easily healed the whole raid single handidly, i was contributing doing around 50% of the heals (which i didnt think was terrible but meh) then i realised as shes disc the priest probibly wasnt ment to heal much anyway? lol
On the airship fight i was assigned to do my job as tank heal and heal our DK as he jumped over, no matter how hard i spammed heals, cooldowns and anything else i could think of i found it so hard to keep him alive :(, after wiping the disc priest whispers me, Do you need me to bubble the tank? I responded yes and omg the fight was like instantly 80% easier, im wondering if id be able to do these fights in future with out the disc? :( or even if i could handle raid healing alone, im even contemplating dropping my pally and becoming a disc, as my gear gets better healing will be easier? or is tank healing/raid healing generally hard as a healadin?

Sorry for the wall o' text :) Any imput is appreciated ^^

You're a bit undergeared for those fights, and when the tank jumps over he can take a lot of damage for a number of reasons. For example, the dps are late in jumping or take a long time to kill the mage - the enemy admiral will get a huge stack of his buff and hit incredibly hard. That mob also tends to evade bug at the drop of a hat and hit the tank from behind. And when the tank needs to jump back to your ship, he may eat a few unmitigated hits from behind and take heavy damage.

I only heal in pvp but a few tips i've found to keep someone alive who is about to take ferocious damage:

If you have a spellpower trinket use that before casting sacred shield, that spell scales very well with extra spellpower. Keep the flash of light heal over time active on the target too. Use hand of sacrifice on the tank and deal with the damage you take either by beaconing yourself or having a /cast [target=self] Holy Shock macro.

The tank may not be properly geared either, which is a pretty bad combination, especially if you aren't expecting it. There are some tanks that no healer in the world could keep alive.

To answer your last question, we are not as good at raid healing because we have basically no AoE heal and Flash of Light isn't enough to keep up with most of the damage in progression raiding. We are, however, very good at tank healing: Beacon of Light, Holy Light, mana longevity and our extra tools are all very good for keeping two/three people alive through very heavy damage for a long time.

From my experience of healing when the tank jumps over to the other ship, I have found that DKs are the hardest to heal there.

Typically we will two heal this fight, but when we started we had three healers and found that in order to keep up a DK we had to have all three of us spam healing the DK. Now we are all a lot better geared and with a decent holy pally the other healers don't need to worry about the DK. The main difference in terms of gear for us is that now all our holy pallies (and everyone else) are sitting between 5.3k and 5.6k or more GS which is a big step up for healing output from 4.6 k.

With the mana and SP that you currently have you shouldn't be expected to solo heal the tank that jumps across and other healers should be helping you, whether by shielding or by direct healing. In the case that you described, the disc priest should have been on the ball and seen that you needed help before the wipe.

As to whether you could handle raid healing alone, very simple answer: NO.

There is a reason for having tank healers and raid healers; tank healers heal the tanks, and as Lecan says '... our extra tools are all very good for keeping two/three people alive through very heavy damage for a long time ...', while raid healers have abilities to heal large numbers of people quickly who have a lot smaller health pools and who tend to take less damage. But tank healers should also be helping out with healing anyone else when time permits, and raid healers should be treating the tanks as part of the raid and healing them as needed.

There is also the issue that in some fights healers can be stunned / silenced / etc. and the healers need to be available and aware enough to pick up the slack when this happens.

On to whether better gear making healing easier, again a very simple answer: YES.

Simply put better gear means more mana, more SP, higher crit chance and faster casting (more haste). As I said earlier we used to three heal in ICC, but as we've geared up we now two heal.

And for your final question:

Whether you keep playing your pally, or drop it and play disc is something no-one else can answer, it depends totally on what you enjoy and your playstyle. However there is nothing wrong with trying a disc priest as well (or any other healer) and seeing which you prefer, or like me have three ICC healers and choose which one to play to complement the rest of the group.

TL;DR; I gave great pearls of wisdom and you missed them :(
(I admit that the pearls of wisdom may have been in other posts, or more likely after closing time at the pub)
