I don't have a lead foot! There was a lot of uphill driving, especially after the CA/OR border, and I did a lot of passing because I was driving too fast for trucks in the right lane but too slow for cars driving in the left lane. (Sorry, I'm not in the mood for a speeding ticket from the Oregon state police). The mileage I got is impressive, all things considered.

And believe me, I wanted to drive into Washington to fill my own gas but my dad wanted me to fill the tank in Oregon for the slightly cheaper prices. I went to the Costco station near Portland airport and got 3.619/gallon. I believe the Costco just across the border was priced at 3.679/gallon.

...Why?

And people LIKE pumping their own gas? Every time I leave NJ I remember how happy I am it's a full-service state.

Yeah there's a couple of town along the highway that actually patrol the interstate looking for out-of-towners to ticket. Something about them being too far away to actually want to come back to fight it and just paying the ticket. One of little towns got in trouble a while back for it IIRC.

Crazy stuff.

I prefer to most of the time, when it's not terrible weather and stuff. It's faster than waiting for the attendant, especially when there's like 10 cars there and only 1 or 2 people working. Your car is full, and that nozzle is sitting there in your tank, taunting you.

Taunting you... Smiley: mad

Oh yeah, and I almost felt like a fool for assuming the attendant would need my zip code. I guess that's a California thing.

At least it didn't take him long to figure out I was a traveler. :P

I almost never wait. Maybe I would if our stations weren't busy enough to keep the attendants moving. But it's relatively rare, all things considered, to pull into an empty station in NJ. Population density and all that.

On the occasion I have to wait a minute for the attendant, that's what smart phones are for. WAY preferable to having to get out of my car when it's pouring, 10 degrees, etc.

That said, the only times I generally see people topping off the tank is if they're paying with cash. Because people don't really want to wait for change. I usually pay with my card (because I don't typically carry cash in the amounts filling my tank costs), and the attendants almost never stop it.

I also most frequently head to WaWa stations. One's blocks from my house, and is on the way to the parkway, and one is on my route to the parkway to get back home. There ARE other options on my way home, but the roads get worse rapidly as you approach rush hour, and the WaWa is far enough down that you can avoid the worst of it.

Yeah, most of the stations in our town at least are pretty small, usually only 1 attendant. So when you end up with 4-5 cars showing up, there's a bit of a wait. Followed by something like "Daddy, is the car done eating yet?"

Yeah, but you're not a self-service state, right? All of our stations are appropriately staffed, because you can't pump your own gas.

Having only one attendant makes sense if it's going to be an optional service, or if they're only there in case there's a problem.

Our smallest stations might have only one attendant. But, in my experience, four pumps can be fairly easily managed by one attendant. Every so often, you'll hit a station where there's 8 pumps to one attendant, and that gets rough, but it's generally rare.

Right, we can't pump our own gas. Just for example, the 2 stations closest to us both have 8 pumps, generally one person in the mini-mart thing and one on the pumps.

See, that's super rare in NJ. Your state needs to get as good at ******** as NJ is.

Also, up your population density so that you can support multiple stations close to each other, so there's competition.

NJ drivers are also largely in a hurry at all times. The longer we wait, the less likely we buy a lot of gas at once. If you can get to me right away when I stop at a station, I'm more likely to fill up my tank than if you take a while.

So you ultimately get to sell me more gas by being overstaffed. And you average that out across all your patrons, and you should probably make more with the extra employee on at most hours. At least between 6 AM and at least 7 PM.

I don't think I've ever seen a gas station where you don't have to do it yourself. Then again, gas is so expensive here that every tenth of a cent you can cut on the cost matters to people.

Not if you're expecting gas prices to rise soon.

And for funsies, here are the current gas prices in the Netherlands:
Euro (standard petrol): € 1.828 ($2.42)
Super (performance petrol or something): € 1.894 ($2.51)
Diesel: € 1.478 ($1.96)
LPG: € 0.809 ($1.07)

Now keep in mind, that's per liter, so multiply by 3.78541 to get 1 gallon.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal in most states, especially in California. And reporting him would be too much effort for me; I'm on vacation!

In any event, I totally see the convenience factor of having an attendant pump the tank, but as a Californian I personally find it more convenient to pump my own gas.

And that concludes my part of this gassy discussion.

The current testing methods that EPA uses to calculate estimated mileage was last updated in 2008. My Camry is a 2007 model year that was sold in late 2006. The 2007 model year attained 24 city/33 highway estimates, and after the updates it was changed to 21 city/31 highway. So Smiley: tongue back to you!

It's against the law because it can cause spillage, which is obviously a safety hazard, and it also can allow the gas to leak into the air causing air pollution. At least, that's what I remember from reading about it when it became law back in 2009 (I think).

Basically, if you're filling the tank they want you to let the pump stop itself. Topping it off is when the person filling the tank continues to fill past that point, usually to round up to the nearest dollar.
