In Brazil, the mother gets around 12 weeks (4 during pregnancy, 8 after), cant be fired during pregnancy unless the company proves that the mother is being fired for a fair reason(like stealing or similars) , but can be fired soon after she comes back to work (it happens more than it should).
The father gets 10 or 15 days, if Im not completely wrong, but I think Im correct.
If you are unemployed, you can get some government help, but theres nothing to do with having a child or not. If you work, you get nothing from government, only deductable taxes.
Plus, if you are unemployed and is really poor, you get another small paycheck as long as you prove that your child is in a school.

So...we get nothing for having a child, we get a small paycheck if we are unemployed, another really small paycheck if we are really poor and our children are in school and the mother gets 120 days in the end of the pregnancy.

Just out of curiosity, why French and Italian?

Also, I'll probably be in middle/south France drinking champagne this Christmas and new year's. Smiley: smile

Edit: Missed that there was a new page already.

Let's say I pay the lady across the street to watch my kids for a few hours in the afternoon until I get off work. If she gets pregnant, has a kid, and decides she needs to take 10 months off, should I have to pay her to NOT watch my kids while I'm also paying someone else to do the job?

This is also the kind of thing that can lead to gender discrimination even with people that otherwise consider women as equally capable of performing a job. Over a 3-5 year period, a female employee that has a kid will cost 20-30% more than a male employee. It's not fair, but I think it's unrealistic to think that that thought doesn't cross some peoples' minds.

Dude, I needed to post some pictures from my phone, but I totally forgot and now I can't post pictures and other excuses, but someone put up a million MLP posters on our hallway and I wanted to ask when you'd moved in.

Which is why there should be equal paternal paid leave as well. Well, one of the reasons. The other being that dad's have just as much of a need to bond with their children as mom's do.

I bring my daughter to work once a week. There's nothing funnier than watching her walk up to a SPC and telling him to drop. They start to laugh until they realize I'm watching and that any order she gives is an order I give.

Protein, I know the idea of a family of mutated superheroes sounds awesome, but it usually doesn't work out very well.

Addams family meets the Incredibles? There's potential there. Smiley: grin

Anyway it's more fun to play with small animals anyway. Mice, chickens, wombats, monkeys... you know, little stuff. Smiley: wink

You're playing with fire there. Let me throw some gasoline on it.

Kaolian! Kao! Protein is experimenting on wombats!

Largely because they'll be most useful for my focus for the time periods I'll be applying to programs for. Plus, in the 17th-19th centuries, British, French and Italian newspapers were reporting on everything. So even if I can't read letters/newspapers/journals/etc. written in other languages, I'll still be able to access those cultures using English, French and Italian.
