From today (January 11). 12-year-old had his fingers sewn back on after blowing them off with a firecracker.

There should be exclusions for getting your fingers sewn back on. That is one of them. Don't be stupid.

Bah, I can't fake it. I do feel bad for the kid. I'm sure that hurt like a *****, hopefully that was enough of a lesson to not do that again. Smiley: disappointed

I've been in an insane amount of dangerous situations and had fingers almost cut off.

That said, had I not been able to have one reattached, I would have felt like ****, but it would have been my own **** fault for any one of a thousand other dumb things I've done with knives, explosives, guns, bows, fishing rods, motors, etc.

Doctors are there to heal you, not to make you whole after you're a complete dumbass.

That just means that a finger reattachment is possible, and I'm not saying that there are industrialized nations that can't do a basic finger reattachment. We don't know the extent of the damage to the man in the video, or the extent of the damage to the boy in the article.

To be honest, I'm a little confused as to what exactly your point is in this debate. You seem to be opposed to the idea of universal healthcare, but I can't figure out why. You mentioned something about a limited supply of medical care, but I fail to see how this is relevant when comparing the US model to the European model. Doctors need to get paid, true. In the US, the patient pays the doctor. In Europe, the government pays the doctor. The patient then pays the government through taxes.

Potayto/potahto, isn't it?

Edit: The difference being that the cost is spread out, meaning the patient doesn't have to give up his life savings to avoid being handicapped for life.

Considering that he still had a hand to reattach the fingers to, I'm inclined to say that it was a really small firecracker and it could have been a lot worse. Google-translate isn't doing much with the story, so I can't say much else about it.

In a system where the government is the sole payee for medical care, the government will decide who gets that care and who doesn't. There aren't enough doctors for everyone to get everything they need when they need it. The government is rationing the care. In a system where the market is involved, my insurance company will make the exact same decision, but I have the option to reallocate my private resources to pay for care that wouldn't otherwise be provided. The profit-motive is also preserved, and human-nature being what it is, there is a ton of private investment in R&D.

That's not to say there aren't flaws in the current system we have. There are problems, huge problems. But I think the best solution is to work on fixing those problems rather than adopting a new system that's going to have it's own issues.

Alternatively, the patient has the option to trade there life savings to avoid being handicapped when they weren't approved for the procedure (and the procedure is even available so the patient has that option).

Profit motive and the ability to preserve the ability to pay for care is something that is present in pretty much every nation that provides public health care.

That said, keep this **** in the asylum where it belongs.

Sole payee for medical care sounds just as bad beer as having to pay for it personally. We've got a boobs mix here, where you can get surgery for free at a public hospital, but you can also pay a private hospital if you don't want to stand in line bored. Stuff like blown-off fingers get a higher priority than someone having hip surgery, so it's not like you have to pay to get your fingers reattached WoW related **** picture.

See what I did there, Xsarus? Can't nuke something that contains beer, boobs, boredom and WoW related **** pictures, because that's what this thread is all about! The text is just fluff.

How do you figure we don't have enough doctors to go around Astarin? I've heard people complain about the waiting for non-life threatening issues in countries with universal health care, but I've never heard anywhere from here say we don't have enough doctors.

Also, I hadn't played AC yet either. I'm still on the first one. I got distracted by the Civ 5 expansion for a bit.

A small firecracker does not blow off your fingers. But aside from that, an explosion isn't a very neat way of severing a finger (like a saw or knife might do) which is what I meant by extensive damage. In fact I can't think of many more messy ways of losing a finger so I'm amazed that they could restore it because in 99% of all cases I've heard of (and we have a bunch each year because of fireworks for new year's) the finger or hand is just gone, kaput, lost.

On a sidenote, those accidents also always include either illegal fireworks or kids stuffing loads of fireworks into a small pipe and it going off in their hand or something. With the exception of the occasional person where the bottle holding a rocket falls over and shoots someone in the face.

In the US it's as much or more of an issue of geography versus availability. The closest specialist that I wanted to take my daughter to, for instance, was 85 miles away; actual driving time would be over 2 hours. I don't live in a major city, but I live within an hours drive of 5 cities with a combined metro area of over 1 million people. Until my kids turned 6, the closest dentist that would see them was over an hour away. When I was working in EMS, we had to do convalescent transports (non-emergency patient transport, usually to see a specialist or transfer facilities). Some of the trips would take us halfway across the state. Initial appointments for specialists could take months, and waits for follow-up care could be just as bad.

Canada has made it illegal to pay for a service that the doctor can provide, but Canada-care won't cover. See protien's comment about the number of researchers coming to the states because more private money goes into R&D here than anywhere else.

I can think of a lot of things worse than having a small to medium-sized firecracker do enough damage to sever fingers without taking the whole hand. Crushing injuries from heavy equipment, for example, could destroy a joint. Those are harder to fix than breaks on longer sections of bone. Something like a woodchipper could be incredibly destructive. With severed limbs, time between injury and reattachment is absolutely critical. There are so many variables that, without more details, it's impossible to compare the two incidents.

I think everyone's said about as much as there is to say about this. I have no problem talking about politics (just ask Pigtails), but this really isn't the place for it.

My wife and son spent New Years with her sister in Bremen, Germany. They had a tiny window of the 3rd floor apartment open so they could hear the fireworks. One managed to shoot up through the window into the room and she ended up with a scratch and burn on her arm and her sister recieved a 3cm burn near her eye as well as some singed hair. Smoke filled the room and much shouting resulted in a very upset baby as well. An exciting evening :)

Australia has a public health system where pretty much everything life threatening is covered and most non-serious injurys and procedures are also covered (albeit with crazy long waiting lists for some). We also have a significant private system which allows you to choose your hospital/doctor and not have to wait in the queue. It seems to work well in most cases although some of the waiting lists for certain elective surgerys are pretty bad.

Although on the downside, I'd spend way too much time playing with my own boobs if I had those, and I probably wouldn't get much done.

I think my YouTube is broken, Aeth, because I'm noticing an acute lack of boobies in that fix.

And cynyck, I'm looking forward to your counter-post.

Edit: Also, using the computer from my bed is completely uncomfortable. Got a letter last week saying they had to change the windows in my room, so I had to make room for them. I asked the landlord when they'd come and he said "7 AM one of these days". When I asked him to elaborate on "one of these days", he said that they've reserved every day for the next two weeks. In short, I now have to get up before 7 AM every day for the next two weeks, in case they come. And because I'm lazy, I'm not moving my furniture back until after they've been here, so I'm sitting in a makeshift fort, made from my bed, my desk and an upside-down chair. Good stuff, but not as comfortable as I had expected.

For all those still unaware of this comic: Girl Genius is one of the best comics I have ever read, online or otherwise. It has a @#%^ing awesome story, mad scientists and badass monsters. Really, just go read it.

It'll also give you plenty of distraction for the rest of the week at least if you're bored at work.

But the eyeliner is ****! And he's a pirate! With a hook! No need to bring in toys for nice scritches when you have a hook for a hand. Although I suppose that could make other things awkward or uncomfortable... Fine, I'm okay with keeping him for myself and not sharing too! Smiley: tongue

Nah, mostly did the effects by myself (they're pretty ****** iPhone pictures). I used an app to throw together the pics into one, though and then edited with Snapseed because I'm too lazy for Photoshop/iPhoto.
