Starbuck was my least favorite character in BSG. She was trying way too hard to be "one of the guys" all the time.

Tails, if you're going to write a teenage fantasy romance, draw inspiration from Cassandra Clare rather than Stephenie Meyer. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare is better than The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Both are sappy teenage romance stories set in the modern world against a fantasy background, but where Stephenie's novels are all about girl issues, sparkly vampires and puppy werewolves, Cassandra takes on angels, demons, warlocks and the old-fashioned vampires (cunning predators who go up in flames if exposed to sunlight).

They're doing the movies for them now, with the first movie released August 2013:

That trailer looks awesome Maz! I'll definitely have to check that out in some form.

When I say more like Hermione, I didn't mean exactly like her. I agree that her insufferable know-it-all qualities were definitely annoying. I wouldn't want to make my heroine like that. I just meant someone who is intelligent, independent, strong, and not quite so focused on boys. The vast majority of teenage girls are interested in boys (other than the ones who like girls of course), so it's difficult to not have any sort of romance in the story at all, but it doesn't have to be the focus of the plot.

Normally, I'm not, but I like her writing style. The main characters in her works almost all possess a sarcastic and dry sense of humor which is right up my alley (and very not like the teenagers I know). And while there are times where it's painfully obvious that the author is a woman (seriously, girls, you can't actually see a guy's muscles "cord" under his skin through a sweater), it's a lot more about beating the sh*t out of bad guys than Twilight ever was.

I also like her take on the mythos more than Stephenie's. There are angels and demons as the two warring "species" from other dimensions, with humans in the middle. Then there are the hybrids, like fairies (when a mommy angel and a daddy demon love each other...), warlocks (demon and human mix) and Shadowhunters (humans who drank the blood of the angel Raziel), plus those infected by the demonic diseases: vampires and werewolves. No one sparkles. Well, one Warlock does, but that's because he enjoys wearing glittery makeup (he's homosexual, yes actually, he's bisexual).

And yeah, it's incredibly cliche, with the nerdy girl who thinks she's insignificant, suddenly able to see "the shadow world" which causes her to be pulled into this fantasy universe where she discovers that she isn't insignificant after all. Her best friend is in love with her, but she obviously falls in love with Mr. Fantastic who not only looks like an angel (something she reminds us of throughout the series), but is also a pretty badass demon hunter and killer (something he reminds everyone of throughout the series). You know, all the intrigues of a love story and all the various personalities that enable you to identify with someone regardless of who you are, but with way more focus on the cool stuff.

I'd call it an amped up Buffy clone.

Don't worry, I wouldn't write a book about that. At least not now. As fun as that would be, I don't think the American young adult fiction industry is ready for something like that. I might be being pessimistic there, but that's my concern.

This is the best Belgian beer I have ever had. And that includes the famous Westvleteren 8 and 12.

Kind of disappointed we aren't even, or barely, half way there.

I woke up about a hour and a half ago (at 10). Not that early, but I did it without an alarm and that hasn't happened in many years.
I guess that's just my body getting used to my new sleeping pattern.

That's a good quote, Aeth. Unfortunately, we have very specific rules when it comes to the lengths of the essays. Luckily, this essay won't influence my exam next year, so I'm just going to write a piece of crap one.

Why do lasersurgeries have to cost so much. I really want to get my eyesight fixed sometime in the future. Especially if I ever want to be a police.

Color blindness is the only sight thing that could prevent you from joining our police force, as far as I can remember. If you've got bad eyesight, you need to wear lenses. Or special security glasses like our soldiers use, I think. The kind that don't shatter and spear your eyeballs if you get an elbow to the face.

Don't quote me on it as it's been a while since I cared about all that stuff. I also didn't have issues with my sight at the time. Think I'm going nearsighted now, though. Too many hours in front of the computer, I guess. Fortunately, glasses look like sh*t on me... wait, that's not fortunate at all!

Hey, guys! Guys! What's causality and intentionality? And why the @#%^ do I have to put it in an essay about classroom literature?

This assignment is breaking my mind.

In all seriousness though... the causality wikipedia is pretty clear. The intentionality one is less so.

Years ago Aeth gave me a good drop find to use for my bank alt. It is now longer in game.

Going to use it to mog my priest. Have some ideas all ready.

Wish I'd farmed a few more of them cause if I had a few I'd be WoW rich.

It's not much different in the real world. Some lady sold a grilled cheese sandwich for $28,000 on eBay after claiming the Virgin Mary had appeared on it. The very first auction on eBay was for a broken laser pointer. Sold for almost $15.

People should send me their money instead of wasting it on that stupid sh*t.

I don't know about other countries, but at least here in Finland you have to have near perfect eyesight to get into police school.

Yeah, if I'm going to throw money after a girl like that, she should at least know how to deliver the money's worth.

Holy sh*t I love going to my parent's house for dinner.

Chateaubriand steak, sautéed mushrooms, twice-baked potatoes, caesar salad, and a couple $300 bottles of wine.

I normally don't eat like a pig, but tonight I ate and drank a ridiculous amount. So damn good.

$300 wine, wat.

I don't think I've ever had a $300 wine. My family enjoys wine way too much for that to be financially sane. We've had some $150-200 wines, but they were disappointing, considering the price.

They're worth it if you're not the one footing the bill.

And if you have a big enough cellar (and stock up smart) you'll eventually end up with some very expensive wines, even if you've only paid $10 or 20 for the bottles.

My mom's side of the family are actually from California (the Sacramento area is where our ranches were until this past year when we sold them) and have been collecting wine throughout the history of the area's development into what it is today.

My grandmother got offered cases of wine for some of the bottles she had; there was one instance where the winery came to her and offered her 5 cases per bottle she gave back to them.

My mom is the same way. It's unlikely that any of the wine that my mom has bought for $20 is worth $300+ now, but definitely some that my grandparents bought is in that range now simply due to age and rarity.
