Also, you got one silver and one bronze medal so far, ranking at a shared 57th place out of 81 countries. The Netherlands are 11th with 6 gold (7 tonight, I hope), 5 silver and 8 bronze. Not bad for a country of 17 million people.

Finland would have to get pretty lucky in hockey; generally Canada, Russia, and Sweden are the super powers.

I wouldn't say that they have no chance (they've won before) but based on the current NHL players that would be playing for each team, I think Canada/Russia have the best shots at gold in two years.

I would agree with Theo on the hockey thing. We've won world championship twice I think.
Our best players played in 95' when we won the first time, and today we don't have nearly as good players.
But skiing and skiijumping, we've got good chances. I didn't even knjow skiijumping is an olympic sport though?

I didn't dislike the ending, it just made me sad. That said, I rarely enjoy sad or ambiguous endings, so could say that I didn't enjoy the ending. I mean, it's a pretty good ending, but it seemed so... final. And I cheated and looked at a LP of the Harley DLC. What a tearjerker, man. When you enter the baby room with all the negative pregnancy tests...

Poor Harley. Smiley: crymore

Edit: Apparently there's a "secret" place in the DLC where you can find Harley's outfit from the first game and a positive pregnancy test. Mind blown.

Hasn't piqued my interest really. So unless I hear form all sides how incredibly awesome it is at endgame, I'm unlikely to bother with it.

You should look into it Aeth. It won't have raids, but there are going to be a few dungeons available only for end game. But... the cool thing is that there are different ways to progress through the dungeons, and they don't have the trinity system of tank/dps/healer, so it looks like it'll be very very different from WoW, which is a large part of the appeal to me.

Aaand that seals the deal. Not interested, I like MMO's for raiding, the rest is bonus. Not to mention that I highly doubt that a system that is not tank/healer/dps will work. I'm not saying it can't work, I'm just really really skeptical about it working, especially long term.

Also, I can see them adding raids at some point anyway because people will get bored at endgame and start complaining, the raids won't work because their non trinity system doesn't work in that environment and people start complaining more and eventually they'll end up with a half assed sort of trinity system, mediocre-at-best gameplay at endgame and a disgruntled base of players.

This, SWTOR didn't have pure class roles, and I found the game to be really ****** in that regard.

Sure it's nice to have survivability (i.e. Rogue's Recup in WoW), but to have a class doing 50% damage and 50% healing is stupid.

I think the main problem is that designers are sitting down and saying "how can we not do the standard trinity system?" because they want to be able to say that they're doing something different from WoW.
The tank/healer/dps setup is simple, clear and it works very well. Is it boring? Yes, but honestly, if that's what has to make the game fun, it's going to be a short lived MMO.

I think MMO designers are still too obsessed with being different than WoW rather than just making a really good MMO.

Exactly. Could you imagine how well SWTOR could have done if it was a clone of WoW that played as well and had a similar profession system, but was Star Wars themed?

If they had done that and made the starship system more robust, I would be playing that every day, even after I've basically given up on MMOs.

I really like some of the stuff that MMO designers are doing, such as the storyline questing in SWTOR. I think that adds a lot of depth to the game.

But really, they should be copying what has worked exceptionally well in WoW (the gameplay). As unexciting as the game is to me nowadays, the gameplay is still the best I've found in any MMO.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking he meant, which is inaccurate. SWTOR works just like WoW when it comes to classes, the only difference being that every class in SWTOR specializes into an advanced class at level 10, which locks their capabilities somewhat.

For instance, the Jedi Knight, which is comparable to the Warrior class from WoW, has to choose between the Jedi Sentinel and Jedi Guardian advanced classes at level 10. The Sentinel mimics the Fury talent specialization from WoW while the Guardian mimics the Arms/Protection specializations. The Sentinel is a pure damage dealer while the Guardian can go either tank or damage dealer.

Same with the healing classes. The Smuggler has to choose between the Gunslinger and the Scoundrel advanced classes. The Gunslinger is a straight up long range damage dealer (mimics the Hunter class from WoW - except with no pet as all classes get a "pet" in their companion), while the Scoundrel is a healer or a short range damage dealer depending on your "talent" tree choice (mimics a Rogue from WoW).

Sure, a Scoundrel specialized in healing (Sawbones) can also deal damage, but so can a Holy Priest in WoW. It's nowhere near as efficient as specializing in damage (Scrapper or Dirty Fighting), though. Much like a Holy Priest vs a Shadow Priest.

It's not like every class in SWTOR is a hybrid class. In fact, there aren't any true hybrids in SWTOR. None of the advanced classes are capable of tanking and healing. You have to choose between tank+damage, heal+damage or straight up damage.

Bit of both.

AOE tanking is difficult for the first, oh, 30 levels or so, for anyone who isn't a Vanguard/Powertech. Assassins/Shadows only have one AOE until level 26 (AOE knockback excluded), unless they go Madness (highly recommended, even if you want to tank). Juggernauts/Guardians don't get their second AOE until level 32. Until then, it's pretty much cycling targets and hoping people focus fire one at a time. When they don't, it turns into a massive cluster@#%^ where you run around and try to peel mobs off the damage dealers who in turn are trying to kite the crap they pulled. Reminded me of back when Swipe got nerfed, luls. *twitch*

Vanguards/Powertechs get so many AOE abilities at the early levels (Sticky Grenade/Explosive Dart, Mortar Volley/Death From Above, Pulse Cannon/Flame Thrower before or at level 10) that it's not a problem for them. Not to mention they've got spammable ranged abilities, so running around isn't necessary.

Guardians/Juggernauts can tank in PvP with a DPS build (due to mitigation modifiers from the skill tree), but it's not recommended for raiding as a lot of the mitigation depends on mobility and raid bosses generally aren't very mobile.

Edit: Christ, Reddit is lagging like a boss. Expanding comment sections takes forever and editing posts produce errors like it's going out of style.

Well that's funny. The worst one I ran with was doing the HERIOC 4 on Coruscant; a Vanguard. I mean he was only like lvl 16 or so, and I remember seeing lots of baster fire, and not many explosions, whatever that means. Mostly he was taking as much damage as everyone else, which was annoying, and made me wish I had at AoE heal at that point. Smiley: frown

Sounds like a fail tank. There are a lot of those in these games.

It's even worse in DCUO, the few times I've actually joined a group with a tank in it. Luckily, most dungeons in that game are doable without a tank (or a healer), but it requires the ability to hold down Shift when you pull aggro. Something people aren't very good at since it limits their ability to pewpew. People would rather wipe endlessly than sacrifice damage output. This is why hybrids died in WoW.

Theo, sounds like bad players. If you're a healer and you can deal damage without people dying, rock on. I've rolled with a few healers like that in WoW as well. It gets trickier later on in the game when stuff begins to hurt like ****. My Operative would mix some damage dealing into the healing when I ran Hammer Station, because I could afford it, but the boss fights were pretty much just straight up boss fights with the tank tanking and the healer healing.

If you guys are tired of the usual MMORPGs out there, I'd recommend giving DCUO a try. It's free to play, so it won't cost you anything, except time and bandwidth. It's an interesting free roam style action RPG. Even if you're not into comics (I'm not), it's still an entertaining hack and slash type game.

Just more anecdotal stuff, the starting levels seem to be filled with the very worst of the window-licking variety. I don't know if it's because those levels are the F2P ones, or if the game mechanics actually force them out after a while, but it seems to get better as I play more. That's the thing I did like though, you actually have to you know, use your CDs and stuff to kill things. There's more challenge (substitute whatever word you want there) in the first 20 soloing levels in SWTOR than anything before herioc end-game 5-mans in WoW.

TL:DR = If you are crappy it seems like it'll show a lot faster in SWTOR. IMO, of course... Smiley: rolleyes

Yeah, in TOR there were definitely classes that were supposed to be tanks or healers. In GW2, there aren't. Everyone has at least one heal, and several classes have AoE heals. Maybe even all of them. I've only watched videos on the classes I'm interested in so far. The whole reason for them doing this, is to make it easier and faster to get groups together for dungeons. You aren't restricted to having to have a tank, a healer and three DPS. I think that's awesome.

Seriously though, just read this article. Therion posted it on facebook and it got me interested enough to start doing research on the game. If end game raiding is all you care about, then yeah you probably won't like GW2. If you can keep an open mind about all the changes they're making, and give them a chance though, I think you might be pleasantly surprised. Sounds like combat will be a lot more challenging and interesting.

Also, it's sub-free. You buy the game, play it forever without a monthly subscription. There will be a cash shop for cosmetics.

Maybe it's the player base, then. There were sh*ttons of posts on forums about healers DPSing and random crap like that; I even talked to a few healers in-game and they would say that they would DPS because they could.

I mean you got some of those retards in WoW, but definitely not as many as in SWTOR (anecdotal).

Yeah, I was kind of amazed as a Sniper how easily I handled a crazy amount of mobs at low levels. I'm talking like 7-12 with silvers and golds mixed in, no problem.

It made me sad how unrefined the jumping and terrain clipping was, because jump-shotting in WoW was one of my very favorite things, and in SWTOR it's super clunky.

Either one or a few classes are going to be better at healing and some will be better at tanking due to their cooldowns or whatever than the others which automatically makes them the designated healers and tanks, the content is going to be so easy (and thus boring) that it doesn't matter or all classes will have to be so similar that it doesn't matter what you rolled as because they're all the same anyway.

It looks like they're trying to take gear out of the equation too. The problem with that is that suddenly, there's no reason to do anything anymore because there's no progress. All you can do is do the same stuff you could from the moment you hit level cap, with a character that is exactly the same as it was as you hit level cap and nothing will change, ever. That's going to be boring as **** in no time.

Very much this. They need to work on the terrain a lot. It's horrible compared to most modern MMORPGs. The jumping animations are fairly good, though. Excellent acceleration/deceleration and overall responsiveness. Not as good as WoW, but better than most other MMORPGs I've played.

The terrain in DCUO is... well, it's weird. If you're using super-speed as your movement mode, you'll stick to any surface while moving forward at a very high speed (faster than an epic mount in WoW). This produces some interesting results when you accidentally hit a lamppost.

Yeah, but the numbers can seem a bit deceiving. There's a lot of those little buggers, but they sure tend to die fast. Like 3 of those weak dudes is worth 1 of a typical WoW baddie or something. The sniper/smuggler is the one class I haven't really meshed well with yet. The whole 'cover' mechanic is taking some getting used to, not sure if I like it, or just find it on the annoying side. I'm hoping I just haven't learned to use it yet or something. Smiley: rolleyes

Yeah, the terrain drives me nuts. I've managed to get myself stuck a couple of times, and have fallen to an untimely death at least once. There are other little bugs that have cropped up in annoying ways as well. The Mrs. couldn't find the hanger bay on Tython so used her fleet pass to get off the planet, only to realize later on her storyline wasn't advancing...

Oops. Victoria's Secret accidentally released unshopped photos for their new catalog.

Potentially NSFW. It's Doutzen Kroes in a lot of different Victoria's Secrets swimsuits.
Let's see if you can predict what will be shopped (aside from the obvious image optimization).

I got to 10 things just for the first image in about 3 minutes.

  • visible muscles will be smoothed and made less visible
  • skin tones will be smoothed
  • hair will be smoothed out, specifically on the left side (her right)
  • her waist will probably be made a little slimmer
  • bigger boobs too
  • on the left side (her right) the top bunches up some skin right underneath, that'll be gone
  • the shiny skin on her face will be perfectly smooth
  • her chin will be less prominent
  • they'll probably do something with her eyes too
  • the frowny bit around her eyebrows will be gone

I was too busy laughing to this to take a magnifying glass to those images.

Probably NSFW, and not for people that jump easy.
