I'd watch the Olympics if they made Shinty an Olympic sport. It's like a mixture of field hockey and lacrosse, minus the body armour. Also, why do some American sports have so much protection? American Football, Ice Hockey, and Lacrosse all have insane amounts of body armour. What's the deal?

So instead we have table tennis!

To be fair, those games do get fairly intense. But still.

Indeed, hockey is hockey, ice hockey is fighting on ice. Entertaining, sure, but it's no match for real hockey.

Also, just look at this (I hope this video works, I couldn't find it on youtube. Sorry for the Dutch commentary but it's probably only shown by the Australians as far as English speaking countries go)

How is field hockey different from lacrosse? I thought that was like soccer (US) and football (pretty much everywhere else).

If the Olympic committee was worried about one country dominating a sport, they would have dropped basketball from the Olympics years ago. Since 1936, the US has won gold in all but 4 years: two genuine losses, one boycott, and one loss under highly controversial circumstances (it came down to an IOC decision on a referee call about a timeout with the US up by 1 point).

Not that I follow basketball, it's just a sport I assumed the USA would excel at.

Lacrosse is ball in air, field hockey is ball on ground. Lacrosse was originally played by the Iroquois, field hockey not so much.

On the bright side, I hung out with S tonight, and he went over the script with me to discuss what he was thinking about blocking and how he wants me to say my lines and stuff... There's one point where I'm supposed to say one of the other character's names in the most sultry voice imaginable. I did it for him, and it had quite an effect on him lol. It made me giggle.

It's more of a southern US thing. Everything down here is football, football, and more football. No school I've ever been to has had a field hockey or lacrosse team (that I'm aware of). No ice hockey teams either, but ice hockey shows up in the occasional movie. I couldn't tell you much about the rules of the game, and could only guess at the number of players even allowed on the ice at once.

Yeah, field hockey is not a redneck sport at all. There's no violence, it's high paced and very technical. I personally find it fascinating to watch but I can see how someone who likes show wrestling and football would find it boring.

On a sidenote, why is football sooooooo slooooooooooooooow? The one time I've watched a superbowl it just took an eternity to do anything.

Football is a group watching sport, so we need time between plays to argue about the play that was just run, to argue about the official who screwed up by calling a penalty or not calling a penalty or placing the ball at the wrong point or about whether or not he was in bounds when he caught the ball or was on one knee or if he broke the plane of the goal line or not or if the ball was touched by an offensive player before it was intercepted or if it was offensive or defensive pass interference, and we also need time to argue what the next play should be.

And it's not an official National Football League game unless there are a couple of fat bald guys in the stands in the middle of the winter without shirts on who have painted their bodies the color of their favorite team. My personal favorite is New York Jets green.

Oh, and if its a superbowl, you really have got to spray cheeze whiz at the TV at some point.

That's a lie. It's a group watching sport, so the time you have between plays you get more beer and more munchies. You should know that.

Maybe we have different definitions of technical, but I just don't see any ball sport as being "very technical". Things like figure skating or gymnastics, or low-contact tournament martial arts are my idea of "very technical". You have a panel of judges deciding that this trick or maneuver or routine is worth so many points, but when you do this or that before or after it it increases the degree of difficulty so it's actually worth more points.

His Excellency Aethien wrote:

I could tell you American Football is all about tactics. How the offense sets a pace to try to keep the defense off-balance, and takes the time between plays to vary their strategy to get the ball down-field. But honestly, I think they've gone way overboard with the replays and the helmet cams and the radio communication between the guys on the sidelines and the guys on the field. There is so much money in the game that teams will hire players that they think excel in certain situations, and then change out their players to suit the players' strengths. Rather than get an all-around good tight-end, for example, you might have one that is good at zone defense, one that is good at stopping a running play, and another that does well in man-to-man coverage.

I say bring back Iron-man football like my dad's dad used to play. You have just enough men on the roster to cover if someone gets hurt in the game, and maybe have your QB sit out when you're on defense. And the staff consists of a coach, 1 or 2 assistants, and a team doctor.

Technical in that it's high paced and physical strength doesn't come into play. Also, apparently some player from the Spanish team finished a game with a broken arm today, that had to hurt like a @#%^ing bitch with how much force is placed on your arms when you hit or stop a ball...

Also, tipsy + sad stories on reddit = overly sappy me.

Lacrosse doesn't have a lot of padding. Mostly helmets, gloves, arm guards, and a cup. Because as a defenseman with a six-foot-long metal stick, I can hit your hands all I want to knock the ball out of your stick. And I might hit your head. Accidentally. And possibly your nuts.

Goalies wear a chest protector, a cup, gloves, and a helmet with a throat protector. And that's it.

BTW, lacrosse balls can be shot at up to 114 mph. I think I'll keep a little bit of padding and a helmet, thanks.

I'm planning a trip up to Eugene for early September, yay! And without intending it, I'll actually be up there for me and John's 5 year anniversary. He and I both have money, so we'll actually be able to DO something! I think it'll be only the second time in five years that we've actually been able to afford to go out to dinner or something on our anniversary. That'll be a nice change.

Internet bandwidth vs easy access to Cascade Brewing, Deschutes, Hair Of The Dog Brewing, Ninkasi, Rogue and about a hundred other Oregon breweries. Not to mention probab;y fairly good access to many Californian breweries as well. Who cares about internet speeds if you can spend your days in drunken bliss? :P

It's actually worse now. That was a few hours after it happened. It's actually wrapped around to connect to the bruises on the front of my leg. Starting to turn yellow/green, so it's healing well, but my whole leg has been pretty swollen, which made playing on it problematic (and a little painful since the tissue behind my kneecap was swollen) this past Sunday.

Lacrosse is really similar to hockey in that there's sometimes immense pain involved but most players keep playing through stuff.

Speaking of, I have no pain receptors in my upper arms because of lacrosse; I didn't wear the upper arm guard part of my shoulder pads after I was about 11 or 12, and with people stick checking me there, I've lost basically all ability to feel pain. A friend who's 220 lbs and is pretty much solid muscle punched me in the upper arm and gave me a hell of a bruise, but I didn't feel anything other than the pressure from the punch.

It was fun to tell the kids I coached that and have them test it because they usually thought I was bullsh*tting them. Smiley: grin

EDIT: Here's my leg now, two weeks and two days after the fact.

Screenshot

Notice the green/yellow making its way to the front of my leg from the back? Smiley: lol

I absolutely love leg injuries.

In that they're pretty much the only injuries that make me squinch when I see them in movies or real life or even hear about them. Ugh.

Open fractures are probably the only injuries that make me squinch. Can't stand open fractures.

That's an impressive hematoma, Theo. When you get tired of showing it off to the ladies, try rubbing it with a cold spoon. That should break up the blood clots. If it turns dark then you should apply a hot compress to increase the blood flow. You can get rid of hickeys the same way.

I never get tired of showing off my legs to the ladies. I've pretty much always let bruises heal on their own, though. Had no idea about that "cure." Thanks for that info.

You should take up Martial Arts. Half the training involves beating yourself and/or other people until you have toughened up enough to be able to brake stuff with parts of your body.

I'm going to have to try that one Maz, considering I have a pretty impressive hickie on my neck right now lol. I made the mistake of telling S he could give me one last night, as long as he didn't go overboard. He didn't mean to, but apparently it got a lot darker about 10 minutes after he stopped. >.< And it's smack dab in the middle of the side of my neck. If I let him do it again, I'll have to make sure he does it more by my collar bone so it's not quite so visible for work.

So I'm about 40% sure I contracted malaria or some other tropical disease, and the doctor I went to said it's my period. Passing out for 2 days and going back and forth between fever and feeling really cold and all sorts of other issues are not part of my period. Going back there tomorrow, hoping I don't have malaria. Smiley: mad

Karachi annoys me sometimes.

Plus, I'm actually too unwell to get actual work done now. Whyyyy.

Be careful and good luck (I'm assuming they will do some testing, I'm not familiar with the state of medicine there). If it is malaria and it is treated properly, it can be completely cured.

People still play Diablo 3? I don't know how people can run the exact same thing over and over again. (I know, I know, raiding in WoW is the exact same thing, which is why I rarely log on any more.)

I'd go back to it, assuming I actually had uninterrupted free time. Those 5 min kiting sessions don't mesh well with little ones. Which is a shame, because it felt like the gameplay was starting to get interesting.

For all the things that annoying about what they've done to WoW over the years, I'm always thankful I can log in for 15min, do a couple of daily quests, go afk for 25min, come back and take down my auctions. re-post some stuff, go afk for another 10min. Then maybe make some inks while getting the dishes done, go afk again, and finally post some more stuff.

90 minutes logged in for maybe 20 minutes of gaming, and I'll actually make some gold and accomplish something. Couldn't do that with D3 sadly. Smiley: frown

I have 796 all resist, 60% dmg reduction from armor, almost 40% dodge, 600 life on hit, 500 life per second and about 22k dps.

I got him to 80% on my best try.

Out of 10 or so.

55k in repairs.

I absolutley hated the pointless grinding in WoW but for some reason I am endlessly entertained by smacking demons in the face over and over and over and over. And I have yet to beat inferno mode, so yeah, maybe once I do that I'll get bored but until then there'll be some nagging feeling that I'm not done yet and by then we'll know when the xpack is released Smiley: tongue

The fact that it's actually challenging (and sometimes insanely frustrating) when you get to Inferno is making me stay too. And lets face it, it's not like the story is at all important to D3, it's a uninteresting bunch of glued together cliches that serve no greater purpose than to give you a reason to go punt demons by the dozen. But so was D2's story and I'm assuming D1 as well.

Ouch.

Is that all the more life regen you guys usually have at 60? I swear my WD had more than that when I stopped playing her. Of course, nowhere near the other stats, and had just started picking up resist gear.

55k in repairs, ouch. How much do you have to farm to keep up with that tab?

Occasionally selling sh*t for 20 million helps. Also, I don't care much about my health per second, life on hit is more important. Oh and I forgot to mention the 58k hp.

We're you playing a Monk? (can't remember).

And yeah, life/hit. I just seem to remember getting a lot of benefit from life/second as well. But I spent an ungodly amount of time running away from stuff, which seemed to give it time to actually matter. Had about 1,000 split between the two of them, IIRC. Just mentioned because I was somehow surprised you didn't have more, with as much more along in the game you got.

Though I have no idea if that's normal or not. Smiley: lol
