Who are you?

But honestly, I was just referring to your positive post about lolgaxe. Don't encourage him, he's bad enough as it is. Smiley: tongue

Wait wait wait!
The fact that you want alone time makes you a bad girlfriend? In what universe exactly?
Girlfriend alone time means alone time for me as well and I'd go crazy within 2 months without alone time.

Really, what's the point of a relationship if you can't spend a couple of days reading a book/playing games/watching weird news channels and pretending the rest of humanity (significant other included) doesn't exist?

I'm actually debating sending Andrew off to India if and when I go to Pakistan. Not the other side of the world, but still not living together.

He's decided he wants to go to Pakistan, too, now, so I might not have to worry about it, and I'd rather not be single over there, anyway.

Well, when you live with a guy and spend two days in a row without paying much attention to him, he tends to get a bit pissy. >.>

My longest "relationship" was a few months. But he was WAY more into me than I was into him.

And prospects kinda suck. It sometimes seems like all the gays in NJ are twinks, and I'm just not into them.

As for religion... Well, I'm definitely in the "do what you want but stop messing with my life" group. That said, I think organized religion is ludicrous (for reasons that have nothing to do with me being an atheist). Religion should be a personal experience--you need to associate with it on a personal level.

Once you bring in an actual organization that feels like it has the right to lay down laws governing the way your religion is run, you've lost that.

My mother's church's priest left a few years ago (moved to Hawaii), and the Episcopal Church sent them an interim priest in the meantime. Her job was literally to find the non-canon practices of the church and get rid of them. So the local traditions that had been practiced for decades (at least) got pruned if they were contrary to what the diocese's ideas were.

For instance, her church did a first holy communion... event (for lack of a better word). All the 8 year olds would have their first communion on the same day after going through a class (insert additional nonsense). It was a big deal in their community--the church would be filled to capacity with family/extended family on those days.

But the episcopal church doesn't sanction that, so it was axed. Same thing with a bunch of other things.

And she was actually forced by the bishop to give sermons about what Episcopalians believed (which was contrary to what many of the members had grown up learning, shockingly). For example, the church's stance on the bread/wine is (thankfully) that it is merely a symbol of the body and blood, not actually trans...whatever-ed into it. For the 50+ people who had believed they were receiving the actual body and blood of god their whole lives, that was a big deal.

And that's RIDICULOUS. This was something the people in the parish connected to, which connected them to each other and to their faith. Why does every church need to have the exact same rituals and traditions? Why does everyone need to believe the exact same thing? Isn't the important part building the community and getting people to engage with their faith?

IT'S JUST SO STUPID. >:(

I need to go to some communion rites again. Get me some of that fine wine.

Wish we'd roll back to the old faith here. If I'm going to put my faith in an invisible person, he'd better make thunder and lightning!

Exhibit B.

Reason I'm going to hell and just don't care #1.

I just spent the past two days reading through 3 books and ignoring the world around me so I don't really see the problem.

<I cut out the tl;dr part>
Your anecdote is a specific example of mismanagement though, it's pretty poor handling of the community by the new guy. Not a problem with organized religion per se, more a problem with organizations.
And I think a very important part of religion for many people is the community surrounding it because it gets them a place to belong to.

Also, I agree that the old gods were more entertaining. A pantheon of gods is per definition more entertaining because they can smack the everliving **** out of each other. But the Greek gods did it best, in my opinion, there's never been a bigger group of cheating, lying scumbags with divine powers.
Specifically Zeus, he ****** everything pretty and threw lightning at everything else.

The Greek gods were crazy.

Definitely wouldn't want to mess with Athena, though. She is one ball-breaking goddess (and as such, I'm drawn to her).

Afaik, the Norse gods were all about faction warfare, but mostly left the elves/humans/dwarves alone.

But Greek gods? They'd start human wars to get back at each other. The Trojan war happened just because three Goddesses forced Paris of Troy to choose which of them was most beautiful (and they bribed him). The other two then teamed up to help destroy his city...

As Diglett said, the Greek gods were AWESOME!

They also sorta invented the whole gay thing. Parties full of horny men where women weren't allowed 'n such.
Also, did you know that at the first Olympics the athletes were naked?

Norse gods didn't really fight each other. They fought the evil beasts and held competitions to prove their worth to each other. Often those competitions would be manipulated by Loki to end in disaster, though.

Ancient Greece was nasty. Apprentices being forced into a sexual relationship with their master in order to "learn about the world".

Shall we move to Hinduism then? Lots of angry gods and they painted **** all over their temples for "educational" reasons.

I'll stick to Odin and Thor then.

Sex is good and all, but without beer to get drunk on, sex and six-armed deities make for a nasty combo.

Last year on my pilgrimage (a.k.a. tourist trip) to Canterbury Cathedral I had the pleasure of talking to one of the priests there and he told me he used to be a prison vicar and collaborate closely with the prison imam to allow everyone to do their faith stuff. I thought that was cool.

And Greek gods were awesome. Hindu gods are awesome, too. When Shakti and Shiva have sex, the world will end! \o/

It would suck so badly if I couldn't have sex without the world ending. Blueballed till the end of time etc.

Also, there's really no good reason for religions not to coexist peacefully it's just that the extremist/orthodox twats can't seem to accept that they might possibly not be completely right about everything ever said by their deity.
