Female + white + blue eyes should be enough.

But the TEFL game is racist as can be. I have a lot of friends in it, the racism of the TEFL game isn't pretty.

It stands for "Teaching English as a Foreign Language." It'd be incredibly useful for me considering how many immigrants (legal or not) from Spanish speaking countries we have in the states, so it'd give me a nice advantage for teaching in a high school.

LAWL

No, they all ready speak english. It benefits so you can make money teaching english abroad. TESL is teaching mexicans english, TEFL is teaching english to people in foreign lands.

TEFL lets you travel and make money, TESL means you teach people who will learn english anyways how to learn english.

You guys learn it grade school. TEFL is usually in Asia, the ME, SA or East EU. TESL is in American schools.

High school usually (so ages 12-16/17/18) but I think that all you need to teach here would be to speak Dutch, English and being capable of dealing with teenagers.

Oh right. I was thinking they were the same thing. =x

And I could potentially try to get a job in the Netherlands with the certification, but the issue with teaching anywhere in Europe or in one of the South/Central American countries, is that they only pay a living wage. Asian countries on the other hand, have such a high demand for teachers that they pay you enough that you can live comfortably and save money. Or pay off student loans and credit card debt... Like, $500 a month or more depending on which country you teach in. That's what the research I've done has told me anyways.

I honestly have no idea what teaching pays around here, although I don't think it's a whole lot.

IIRC, there's a student loan forgiveness program for teachers that are willing to teach for a few years in certain schools. Found it here. 5 years for $17,500 in student loan forgiveness isn't a terrible deal.
#9672 Sep 13 2011 at 5:29 AM Rating: Good
It'd only be 5 grand for me.

Quote:
You may receive up to $5,000 in loan forgiveness if you were a highly qualified full-time elementary or secondary school teacher.

You may receive up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness if, as certified by the Chief Administrative Officer of the school where you were employed, you were:

A highly qualified full-time mathematics or science teacher in an eligible secondary school; or
A highly qualified special education teacher whose primary responsibility was to provide special education to children with disabilities, and you taught children with disabilities that corresponded to your area of special education training and have demonstrated knowledge and teaching skills in the content areas of the curriculum that you taught.

I want to be an English teacher, so I get punished because science and math teachers are in higher demand. Too bad I hate math and really only like Biology out of the sciences. I already knew about that program, but thanks for the heads up Astarin. Smiley: smile

Also, I meant to post earlier that I talked to my friend earlier this evening, and his offer for me to stay with him for a while is still up. So I won't be homeless. =x Downsides are it's a good deal farther away from campus than where I am now, and he warned me that he's a nudist at home (really don't want to see that, but oh well), but it's definitely better than nothing. Didn't want people worrying about me. Smiley: grin
