In short: There's no reason other than irrational clinging to a spec not to go with what gives you the most DPS.

In my particular case, it was more a case of irrationally wanting to throw a spec as far away from my toon as I could. I played Arcane for a year and a half in Wrath, until I switched mains to my druid. If you don't understand why people have a preference for one spec or another, I'm not sure how to explain it to you. All I know is, is that I am very far from alone. There are a lot of people who are unhappy with Arcane's rotation and play style. Just that the majority of people who play mages want to squeeze out the most DPS they can, and/or have no idea that Frost is actually viable as a PvE spec. I can't exactly say I blame them really. Frost hasn't been a viable raiding spec since Molten Core after all.

I just wish Blizzard would separate PvE from PvP completely, and make is so that every single spec in the game is viable to raid with. Different strokes for different folks after all, and it's stupid for people to be punished or ridiculed for playing a spec they enjoy.

Yes, Arcane is boring as all hell, and makes you want to cut your fingers off so you don't have to play it, but Aeth is right, if it's consistently higher dps than the other two, you should be speccing Arcane.

That's the system in Rift, from my understanding, and most people I've spoken to say it sucks.

I play Wow, a video game, because I want to have fun, right? So you're telling me that I should play a spec I don't enjoy, because it does more dps, even though my raid leader and fellow raiders don't care one way or the other. No, that's stupid. We're a casual, one night a week raid. We just downed Rag for the first time on Monday. In comparison, my guild's progression raid groups are at 7/7H and 6/7H. If I was a serious progression raider, you might have a valid point. But even still, there's at least 200 people who play Frost mage who have killed heroic Rag in 10 man. I just checked this last night when having this "debate" with you guys. I figure that if hardmode progression raiders can get away with playing Frost, than I should be able to as well.

You're taking this way too personally. I'm pretty sure nobody has said you were bad for choosing Frost, just that they're all acknowledging Arcane is better. You aren't playing your mage alongside any of them, so it doesn't really matter what they think, cause they aren't in your raid, let alone your raid leaders. Smiley: wink

What I'm just wondering is how big a part of having fun is your rotation for you? Because I've always gotten my fun from getting everything possible out of my character and if that means I've got a boring rotation, meh, so what. Sure I'd prefer to have a more interesting rotation but it's not such a big deal to me.

Well and I'd be constantly annoyed with myself if I knew I could respec and get better performance.

Also, the spec preference argument is no different than the class preference argument. It's all just buttons on a keyboard, so why should it matter what you play? Everyone should spec the highest possible dps class (with the exception of one person for each raidbuff), obviously. Smiley: tongue

If you could switch in 5 minutes, sure. I didn't mind which character I was playing either out of those I had at level cap.
#10684 Oct 14 2011 at 6:05 AM Rating: Good
Well, I was speaking sort of in absurdum there, to illuminate that clearly some amount of preference occurs one way or another. After all, there was a class you gravitated toward first, right? Smiley: grin

I'm with you, could play just about any class as they're all distinct in some way that makes them interesting. Though for the first 6 months of Wrath I admit I really didn't grok Death Knight at all. I don't remember when exactly it clicked but up to that point I just felt like I was pressing buttons in a random order. So maybe other people have that problem with some classes/specs? /shrug

It's a game, I try not to care too much. Blizzard has done a lot to make multiple specs viable so if it's performing up to their baseline the rest really isn't worth splitting hairs over.

It's because I think we scared Maz off with the buttsex talk and lolgaxe is nerdgasming at NYCC. That kind of cuts into the amount of people spamming this thread.

I probably am taking it too personally, but I get teased by guildies on a regular basis for being frost (although most of the people do so in fun, not out of malice), and I was recently verbally attacked by an individual in trade chat as well. I'm just tired of the poor reputation that Frost has is all. Frost is better single target dps than Fire is, but if someone wants to raid as fire, people might ask why they aren't arcane, but probably won't give them too much **** about it. I just get frustrated.

Also, being told I *should* be doing something, is basically telling me I'm wrong for doing differently. I may not have been directly told that I was bad for choosing Frost, but it's certainly easy to think that it's been implied.

Also, I hate getting sick.
