You ARE missing a big part of the game. First, there is no real challenge outside of instances. Second, you ignore the multiplayer aspect of a MMO game...
Find yourself some friends mature enough (well, I don't know how that works on the horde side, heh). I can tell you that our raid community includes a lady rumored to be 60 or so. From my experience grownups tend to play late - god knows what you can meet during daytime (my wife complains about that often).
But it is very easy to spot kids - usually one sentence from them is enough. And just be ready to kick them the moment they start acting up.
