Firstly Sha'tar rep comes from the Tempest keep instances and you can't do them till you are 70, you need a flying mount.

As for Healing as Shadow, it certainly can be done. I would look at having 14 points in Disc though, meditation is such a boon.

You will need some good healing armour, a fair few super mana pots and good timing. When I used to heal as a SP I had two problems, lack of mana efficency/regen and the fact my big heals took that much longer. 0.5 seconds seems a long time when you are waitinng for a heal to go off. Fortunately for SPs the Holy tree spells are so ***** you will rarely miss them, i cannot think of a time I thought "Damn, I wish I had CoH".

So you can do it, it will be hard. Is it possible you could go as a DPS instead and let a holy/resto spec do the main healing?

My shadow priest is level 61 at the moment and I did a couple of ramparts runs yesterday. I had to heal on one of them and I have to say that it was quite hard to keep up, especially on the dragon. The fact that we had a crap tank didn't help much. As far as trash was concerned I was quite happily VE healing through that, and was forced to do so again on the second boss (with the odd gheal on the tank) to keep up with the group damage.
The run I did as a dpser went much more smoothly. We had a holy pala healing and everything went down straight away.
I guess that at the end of the day if you're specced to dps then that is what you should be doing. I reckon that anything past slave pens would be a serious struggle on a 51 point shadow build to be honest.

61-68 its okay. By 69&70, mainhealing instances without chain potting and awesome gear becomes tough. This is a problem, because good equipment tends to require completing hard instances... see the deal? I'm not even sure you could complete Warp Splinter, the Harbringer, or the Warchief with only shadow priest healing, not without the party being overgeared (full 70 blues, some epics). SV and Labs are possible, however (2nd boss of Labs will take chain potting in shadow, but... that's shadow).

Its possible... but if you want to heal at those levels, spec for it.

I actually started to avoid instances after 64, for instance my first time through Crypts and Halls was at 70, in heroic. However its really easy to level without instancing in TBC, there's like 10x more quests in every zone.

If you're already a good healer and (key) haven't learned to rely on the Holy talents, you can heal as shadow in decent gear. I've healed all of Shadow Labs, Botanica, Steamvaults, and Shattered Halls, though I admit the PuG's I end up with tend to be pretty good. Also, I make sure the group has someone who can backup heal in case I run oom - I prefer a druid, for Innervate, but as long as there's someone you should be okay. Lots of CC helps too.

Whether you're holy/disc, disc/holy, or shadow, you will need a pure +healing set. It's just not possible to heal without it once you get into level 70 instances. I'm running +1k healing, almost 400 spirit, and 40 mana/5 in my healing gear atm, and not a single piece of my healing gear is the same as my damage gear.

That said, provided you've got some decent gear, you should be able to get groups as playing DPS. A shadow priest, a warlock, and a pally are an excellent combination.
