Am I the only one who loves his gorilla?Follow

#1 Apr 27 2007 at 2:09 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a lvl 50 nelf hunter with a penchant for gorillas. I've had a bear, spider, cat and scorpid, and so far nothing holds aggro and takes more damage than my gorillas. Granted, I wasn't specced as high in BM with the bear, spider or cat, but I still love the hell outta the butt-scratching *******. Anyone else?

I used a gorilla from my early thirties into the late forties and maybe early fifty levels. They are a wonderful pet type to have, for sheer tank-ability mixed with damage that isn't bad at all. Plus, it just looks great to have a giant ape breaking your enemies apart.

I eventually stopped using mine, though, most of the time. It's still in my stables and I use it every now and then. But in the higher levels, gorillas get pretty big. If you're running through an instance, or some caves... Anything that isn't wildly open, then its big body tends to get in your face. Especially when you pop Bestial Wrath. It becomes a mini King Kong!

But I'm glad you still enjoy your pet so much. It can be a nice species to run with.

not at all, i frequently use my gorilla over my cat, just because of how good a tank it is. My gorilla is also my Instance weapon of choice. Thunderstomp is perfect for such. Not all hunters suck up to the boar =].

so are you saying people who chose the boar because they wanted to, NOT because of the boar crusade, are wrong?

I don't go with a Gorilla DUE to Thunderstomp.

I instance and raid alot, so tell me why would I take a pet, who's only special ability is an AOE, into a non-AOE friendly area such as an instance?

Boar- Charge = instant squishy saver, and it is a SINGLE TARGET attack so I dont have to worry about breaking any CC.

*though I have had a recent problem of him being told to attack the target I am attacking, and he charges behyind me at some CC'd mob, then goes to the one I told him to attack :S BAD PIGGY!

To be brutally honest, you should see "Dr. Phil" about this.

While gorillas come from STV, this makes sense because they CARRY STVs (sexually transmitted viruses) -- which could mess the hell out of your computer!

My suggestion: try to see the things you like in gorillas in a nice, female orc. If you can't do that, see if a female Tauren does it for you (and think of the money you'll save not having to buy milk!).

Best of luck with this horrible problem. It was very brave of you to come out and admit it!

Hmmm I would have to agree with Ipon on that one, but hey you could also go find a nice Nelf Druid, then you have a choice on wich way you want to go...

Oh, I didn't think of that!

OP, just try to stay away from the temptation to ask "aquatic form, hot tub, volatile rum?" to her! Just say NO!

no i'm only saying that people hear that the boar is the best pet and make assumptions, the boar crusade is up to them.

I have to say that the boar crusade is the reason I will not get a boar. Not just in effort to be unique, but because after seeing how over-the-top they went and how rude they were to people I refuse to get a boar.

I tamed a Gorilla and ran with it for a while. Not more than a level, maybe two. It was a decent tank, but I abandoned it after only that short run to try it out. I abandoned it for two game reasons and one aesthetic reason. The game reasons are: It's special is an AOE, and has a fairly long cool down. As Caldone pointed out, AOE damage is not CC friendly. I haven't tamed a Dragonhawk for that same reason. The second game reason is that while an AOE attack might be decent in some situations, the three stable space limit forces Hunters to make some hard decisions.

The aesthetic reason I let the Gorilla go is that all gorillas are male. I don't play the game from a first person perspective, I've normally got the camera pulled as as far back as it can go, and staring at the back side of a bent over and obviously male gorilla offended my tender sensibilities. :)

I've never had a gorilla as a pet. I've thought about it, but since I haven't seen many Hunters with it, I had assumed it wasn't that great of a pet to have. After reading about how useful the pet actually is, I might actually get one, hehe.

I don't like gorillas because they are slow. They never get Dash. I like fast pets -- once you get charge yer livin' large!

Dash and Dive are also good for pet ground speed.

The banana problem can be solved by buying tons of fruit and mailing it to an alt or friend. Have them mail the fruit back to your hunter, and just leave it in the mailbox. It won't rot for 30 days. Mailboxes are common. Fruit venders are not (and neither are banks). Anyplace you can find a mailbox, you can feed yer monkey.

That said, fruit is more common in Outlands, people have said.

If you can tolerate their slowness, some hunters do swear by Jungle Stomp and are impressed by its dps. I happen to think it's more valuble as an agro-maintaining tool -- good for fighting multiple targets. I also happen to think if you want an area attack you should go carion bird. Easier to feed (eat meat and fish) - nice stats - medium hp and ac and dps - they dive (they go fast!), bite, claw and screech!

Dive, bite, growl screech or Dive claw growl screech -- either way. Go bite if you don't have a talent that amps up pet's focus regen. Consider Claw if you do. The bite option is "safer" and definitely works. GL!

Ya know I don't think i've ever used a carrion... or owl for that matter. I stick to my cat and wind serpent, maybe i'll go check one out later. I like my cat for soloing/farming but it's getting old, i want to try something else. Whats trachela like to tame? Can't decide between his skin and the bonestrippers. Warhawk has my favorite skin but im afraid I might not like the bird to spend the time to get him. Anyone else have experience with those 2 pets?

carrion birds are awesome.
owls are carrion birds with less armor and more dmg.
same goes for bats.

There was a guy who posted here a lot over a year ago... had a baby screaming FOR THE HORDE! as his avatar. He loved CB's (carrion birds)! He swore they were the BEST! And many, as you may have noticed, still do!

I in fact like CB's a lot.

Basically the CB is medium dps/ac/hp, meaning it's an all-around decent tank, especially if you amp it up w/ Gr Sta (maybe Gr AC - though some hunters are not down on AC talent) - and maybe BM talents. Even w/out that it's a very good tankin', pve pet (that does okay in pvp, too).

Screech used to have "magic" or "holy" status w/ some of these early hunters. Screech was one of the early or first "new" special attacks that animals got, and people used to swear Screech had magic agro holding powers, that nothing could pull agro off a pet that screeched! They were exaggerating, of course, but it still has the rep as being good at holding agro.

Then CBs got Dive - making them fast. So you got a medium, relatively hard hitting pet that's good at holding agro AND has fast speed over land! It really is a killer pve pet. Add to it that CB's are all over the place and available at many levels, they look rad, and they are easy to feed (they eat meat and fish) -- what else could you want?

It's not that CB's really have magic agro-holding power. It's more that Screech, used right, let's you take on multiple mobs easier - if you "get" how to do it. You also have to know when to turn screech off, obviously. It's something you either go "wow, I like this!" or "dang, I'm dead again; stupid adds!" You'll know when you get there which type you are.

Just get a really ugly one and name it Mysisterinlaw or something - and yer in business!

Remember people, I'm not just about the Boar Crusade. I'm really about the stables being a place to park a loved, old pet for a few days - and for us going out into the field and trying out new pets.

People come in here and SWEAR all sorts of crazy stuff - like their baby dino actually must SCARE other players in pvp -- ooo! /shiver (yeah, right) -- and others SWEAR their spider is the best, or their croc, or their yak, or their mongoose, or their mother's wig (it moves on its own, I've seen it!).

Ahem. Enough of that, please. Go try new pets. You might not like em; that's why old faithful's still in the stables, waiting for you. But you might be surprised. GL!

there are no ugly Carrion Birds.
and i know, i have had all skins except the one from deadwind pass (blue greyish skin)

and i also have tried out a cat, bear, crab, tallstrider, ravager, spider and i still have a wolf and a windserpent.

and besides that, my lowbie alt loves his boar and is going to get a snake at lvl 21 (the white ones from Wailing Caverns)

so, never blame me of not trying things out.
you just cant beat a carrionbird for solo PvE, but in instances i often use my wolf due to a lot of AoE from mobs.

windserpent i still need to gain good control of, so i can make it stay ijn place while casting lightning breath. instead of rushing towards the mob once he is empty on focus...
anybody know how to do that? or do i have to hit it manually?
