I joined a PuG last night, and found out something terrible.

I can no longer Tank. I have been the backup tank for my guild ever since it was created, now I am 46 and in ZF and I can't hold agro. My group consisted of 51 resto druid, 49 Enh Shaman, 49 Frost mage, 46 Hunter, and me (45 enhance shaman). The other shaman didn't want to tank because he had no shield, so I offered. I could frost shock and stonetalon totem all I wanted, but I could not keep agro from the mage. On a good note, we had so much DPS in the group it almost did not matter. What ever will I do now that I can't tank? I guess I have to shift back to DPS/support now.

you can tank untill outland instances, the mage was lvl 51 your 45 thats a big gap bro, you where the lowest member in your group, just try to make sure when you join a group to tank their is not such a big gap.

From the sounds of it, you were doing what you could. It's the mage that was having a problem. Playing a mage requires aggro control and if he's ripping it from you while tanking, then he needs to tone it down to a comfortable level - especially if your dps for the instance seemed high. The tanking skills aren't always to blame.

Blizz has done probly everything they can to take shaman out of the tank category. No more rockbiter no longer gets aggro. Spirit weapons makes enh. shaman have less threat. so frost shock spamming is really all we can do. and thats not close to enough to be able to tank.

Blink...you have leather, and then mail armor. Sure, you have a shield...but wtf? Shamans aren't suppose to be tanks. I know, I know, we have some tanking talents in the enhancement tree, but those are garbage, and nowhere near enough to be able to tank effectively. Yes, I suppose at low levels you can tank, but you'd be much better off with a pally/warrior/feral druid as a tank.

wow thanks for pointing that out, we know we are not ment to be tanks but atleast back in the day we could do some tanking, now that does not make us a tank but being able to tank an instance was quite handy. Now in outlands i don't plan on main tanking anymore, but before this expansion if my group could not find a tank i had no problem filling the role. sure it was slightly difficult with less armor and hp, but it was fun and a nice change of pace to the game. It is a shame that blizard made it so we can't tank so well anymore in outlands, and with the changes on the shaman class it is getting difficult for our younger shamans. But even loosing some of our off tanking abilities is kind of rough.

Okay, if you took that wrong, I'm sorry. I have a shaman myself, and know that we can "tank" (as much as anyone tanks) in lower level instances. I've done as much in Gnomer and SM. But anything high level (particularly any raid instance) a shaman would get eaten alive trying to tank or off-tank.

Shamans/Paladins are the 2 role hybrids. Shamans heal/DPS and paladins heal/tank. The only class that's really capable of filling all 3 roles is a druid, and that requires being in any of their myriad of forms. I guess my point was that you can't really expect any class to be able to easily fill more than 2 roles (druids require a lot of finagling and put themselves in not wonderful situations trying to switch between roles in the midst of a fight) because that would, in its own way, overpower the class. It shouldn't be possible to do any high-level instances (5-mans, heroics, or even 25-mans) with all one class type (again, with the exception of druids, what with the shape-shifting), or other classes would have fewer chances to get into groups. After all, why take someone who can only do one thing when you have someone who can seamlessly shift between whatever needs to be done without missing a beat?

It's just a matter of balance that shamans can't tank, and I think that it's a good one, but what do I know?
