I will start by stating that I am LvL 26 Hunter. I don't know much. My question is, can I get by in PVE and PVP with a pet that just "Looks good?" I have done a bit of research on pet types, stats, and other good info. But I am still low lvl and unable to test out different pets in different situations to see for myself. How they stack with or against my hunting style.

I am a Beast Mastery Build, for now. I also travel with a Boar. I may be interested in another type. But not if that certain pet, gets owned my most mobs. Then ripped apart by several.

What Pet/s do you use, and Why? Points proven, always earn good Karma. ;)

Every pet has advantages and disadvantages for everything. I myself have a 45 Hunter on a PvP server and use Humar (lvl 23 rare cat from barrens) and am BM specced. I have had absolutley no problem whatsoever with him, I love the way he looks (reason i got him) and he's a cat which makes him have good DPS.

The fact that i'm BM specced gives my cat and I higher armor and health ratings than a different build, plus the fact that I have 250+ agility gives us both higher armor ratings and higher crit rates which makes my Go for the Throat ability a cloth/leather wearer killing machine. I grind to lvl almost exclusively and don't have any problems taking on 3-4 same lvl mobs with my cat tanking 3, me kiting one and doing it one by one; it can take a while but I don't die from it normally, only if my cat and i are not at full health and Intimidate is on cooldown.

I LOVE my build, in BGs i can easily (given a one on one fight) take on any lvl 49 cloth wearer and win, not all the time as different skill lvls and abilities and all kinds of other stuff factor into it, but I don't ever see a lvl 49 in BG and go oh crap im gonna die, I say sweet gonna get 4+ honor for this guy!

Pick the pet you want to use and make it work for you, no pet is better or worse than any other, just depends on how you play.

You can get by with pretty much any pet.

Some may be more "optimal" than others. For instance, spiders don't have a great deal to offer... nothing unique.

One thing to remember is that whatever your pet, you ought to upgrade your pet skills like Gore or Claw when new ones are available. Petopia (petopia.brashendeavors.net) is a good resource for that.

Thank you for the input, so far. I recently tamed a Worg, from Silverpine Forest. The boar and the Worg/wolf, are the pet looks I want the most. Furious howl, is a nice addition as well.

For the Boar I like all the tanking stats, and many different abilities.

As for the Wolf, I like the look and decent armor, as well as F. Howl.

To bad there isn't a whistle to call my pets to my side, from the sables. Or a "Fetch" command. So my pet would loot my prey after the kill. Like a real hunter's dog would. ^^

All these pets have worked great for me for both PvE and instances. I don’t PvP so I can’t comment on that aspect of the game.

Marksmanship hunters can often pull agro from their pets if they are not careful. So pets that have high agro skills, such as screech, can be more helpful for such hunters. But BM speced hunters simply cannot pick a bad pet.
