Awrite, my turn to be the nublet now.

I repeatedly hear MM Hunters praise boars and Gore, and their ability to hold aggro even through heavy crits. After having tamed a boar I can verify that Gore is like a toned down Claw with +50% crit chance or something like that, except it doesn't crit, it just doubles the damage.

But what is it that makes it so good at holding aggro? The chance to do double damage? Does Gore really do more damage than Claw? Does Gore have a threat modifier?

Or is it simply because boars have +9% armor and +6% health compared to cats? Kitties have +10% DPS which should give increased damage overall and thus more threat.

I'm baffled. Is it the Boar Crusaders spreading propaganda, or are the boars really enchanted angels in disguise?

This is what started it all:

http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/class.html?wclass=5;mid=1171862468202533511;num=52;page=1

Well... the boar actually is the "best pet," except that there is no best pet, save that it is the boar, and even then it doesn't mean any thing -- it's a "Zen" thing -- i.e. don't be too "Western" trying to grasp this.

("When you can snatch the Fel-poo from my hand...." Or something like that....)

So get a boar! And go to Petopia!

OINK!!!

Very tricky, Iponema, but you haven't answered my question yet. Smiley: grin

What is it about Gore that makes it better than Claw?

I answered your question. Please, don't say I didn't. It's right there in front of you.

Regarding your OTHER question (or, as Mr. Martin used to say: "ExcuuuuUUUUUUUUuuuuse ME!"), just look at the numbers. I forget if the base for Gore and Claw are the same, but they're similar -- save that Gore has a __% chance of doing - what? 50% more damage - or is it double? Anyway, Gore not only tends to do more damage than Claw, it can have more of a "microburst" effect, helping pet maintain agro a tad more.

That's why many hunters maintain that Ravager is the "best" pvp pet, in that it has Dash and Gore and naturally high DPS. I believe the math bears this out, that in fact ravies slightly outdamage kitties and mini-T-Rexes.

Gore has a 50% chance to do double damage. Then it has the same chance to crit as claw. The two stack (i.e. if it would do 50, and procs, and crits, it will do 200, or 4x damage). Basically, for the average damage of gore (since it's same focus cost and cooldown as claw, the average damage will do), average the numbers and multiply by 1.5. For claw, just average the numbers.

We'll take the lowest and highest rank:

Gore Rank 1: 3-5 damage, average 4, total 6 when you factor in the bonus.
Claw Rank 1: 4-6 damage, average 5.

Gore Rank 9: 37-61 damage, average 49, total 74.5 when you factor in the bonus.
Claw Rank 9: 54-76 damage, average 65.

As you can see, while claw does more damage without the bonus, when you factor in the bonus as a 50% increase in damage, gore does more. The fact that gore is only available to boars and ravagers, while claw is available to like 9 different pets (including scorpids which I believe can out-DPS anything when they get scorpid poison up to 5 stacks and sustain it, and a couple of birds which can hold aggro really well with screech, warp stalkers who can warp, and cats who can prowl) gore is useful, but it's limited in it's overall use.

For burst or sustained DPS it's great, and boars/ravagers make good all-around DPSers, but for burst damage I'd go wind serpent, for sustained damage I'd go scorpid, and if the damage meter I use counts my pets damage seperate from mine and I really cared about MY DPS, I'd go wolf.

Thanks skribs. And thanks, Iponema. For both answers.

I'll try out my new dead pig. Perhaps I won't mind the whole rotten and falling apart design.
