So how do you guys (and gals) pronounce Shaman?

Do you say:

SHAY-man

--or--

SHAH-man

(I say the first one)

second... it seems that when i watch some educational program about tribes and such, i remember being pronouched "Shah man" hence a latin "Ah" pronouciation, not the US english version of "ay"

but i guess it goes both ways...

Actually Shah-man is the typical US english translation. For my part, most of the education programs I've heard have pronounced it as 'shay-man'. But most Americans say 'Shah-man'.

I say both actually, I'm not too sure what the correct pronunciation is but either way people know I'm saying Shaman. I think Shay-man sounds better though.

Definitely the second one for me. Sitting here saying it the first way makes me feel weird.

I suppose that Shah-man just sounds like what it is.

Shaw'mn

Notably, Vulcan Raven in Metal Gear Solid is referred to as a "Shay'mn".

Second, but then, that sounded better to me because it's closer to the latin pronunciation (chamán).

and since this was not brought up the plural of Shaman is Shaman

There are NO men in Shaman!!!!

I will continue to slap anyone Who says Shamen with a wet noodle of the boar!

I vote that the name of Shaman bechanged to the more traditional and birth of Shamanism called Mun-dang Spirit Talker!

Didn't read through all the posts, but if you have played WC3 you should know the answer: they pronounce it Shah-man, like when you got to the dentist and they tell you to "say ahhh". I've heard it both ways, but as far as Warcraft goes, it's Shah-man.

EDIT: decided to read through and add that the plural is the same as the singular, kinda like fish or sheep.

:)

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/shaman

Main Entry: sha·man
Pronunciation: 'shä-m&n, 'shA- also sh&-'män
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural shamans
Etymology: ultimately from Evenki (Tungusic language of Siberia) samAn
1 : a priest or priestess who uses magic for the purpose of curing the sick, divining the hidden, and controlling events
2 : one who resembles a shaman; especially : HIGH PRIEST 3
- sha·man·ic /sh&-'ma-nik, -'mä-/ adjective

So...Shah-mun is the closest phoentic pronunciation (check the link above for an audio file), and Shamans is indeed the correct plural usage.

Dictionary.com has it pronounced as Shah-muhn first with second choice being shay-muhn. So both are correct, but Shah-muhn is more popular. And I agree with the poster that says Shay-Muhn sounds hick! Shah-muhn. :)
