Vital Hunter Talents?Follow

When I played a mage there were some vital talents that any mage should get (basically 18 points in arcane). Is there anything like this in hunters?

I looked through the talents and am thinking of going half beast and half marksman.

Something like this:

Beast Mastery Talents (26 points)

# Improved Aspect of the Hawk - 5/5 points
# Endurance Training - 5/5 points
# Unleashed Fury - 5/5 points
# Ferocity - 5/5 points
# Thick Hide - 5/5 points
# Frenzy - 1/5 point

Marksmanship Talents (21 points)

# Improved Concussive Shot - 5/5 points
# Lethal Shots - 5/5 points
# Improved Hunter's Mark - 5/5 points
# Aimed Shot - 1/1 point
# Mortal Shots - 5/5 points

But the entrapment talent in survival looks really appealing (or not, because I have not gotten any trap skills yet, but I can envision it being cool.)

To restate my question is there anything vital I'm missing in the above build?

The only warning I'll give you is to be careful about pumping too many points into the beastmastery talents if your on a PvP server... your opponent almost always ignores your pet, so the upgrades don't seem to matter that much. I'm going full on marksmenship, with only 5 points going into beastmastery (Improved aspect of hawk).

The general concensus is that going half into two different categories is unfavorable and will hurt you in the long run.

This is due to the fact that getting to the really good talents requires you to unlock them further in their "Talent Tree". You won't for instance get True Shot Aura in Markmanship or Spirit Bond in Beast Mastery going the half and half route. But if you go mostly Marksmanship you will easily get True Shot Aura or mostly Beast Mastery you will get Spirit Bond.

Spend your first 20 levels getting to know your hunter and find a play style that you like. If you find you like standing back and shooting your bow/gun, go mostly Marksmanship. If you like meleeing go more towards Survival. If you like letting your pet doing everything go Beast Mastery.

Which is better? That is an ongoing debate with no perfect answer. If you really want to put a ton of damage down range (dps) then go marksmanship.

I will say that I have met very few people that went mostly into Beast Mastery. The ones I do know of didn't like it and switched.

And of course that is your other option. Make your tree however you want. If you find you aren't being successful later on you can always spend 1gold and unlearn all your talent points and relocate them.

Me personally, I have gone all into Marksmanship except for Improved Aspect of the Hawk (Which should be in Marksmanship anyway :P )

I have gone all the way to Spirit Bond and like the added fact that the healer does not have to heal me. I just let my pet hit the mob and I get 20 Health every time.

It all depends on your play style really. I have done most of Beast Mastery 31 points, Survival I am going for Lightning Reflexes, Precision and Raptor Strike, only one I like in Marksmen is the reduce mana cost on your bow shots.

My main problem with Marksmenship is I played a ranger in EQ1 and was totally burned out by always being invited into a grp because of the bow aspect.

So do what you want mainly. I am sure as people hit 60 more and more they will find their own little niche of how they like to play thier hunter.

I was totally unaware that I could spend one gold to unlearn all of the talents I had chosen. So I can unlearn my whole tree, get all the points back and restructure my tree? Or did I misread that?[lg][/lg][/Red]

I had some points in survival, but I found that as I leveled I really felt they were wasted. So at about 40, I spent the one gold and redid my talents. I went all into Marksmenship except the 5 I used to improved aspect of the hawk. I usually like to solo hunt and at 46 I have no trouble going out on my own and having a good time. The key is also having a LOT of agility. All of my items are based on their agility stats. If a mob never gets close to you, who cares about anything else. With all my talent points in marksmenship, and about 250 agility (I'd tell you exactly but the servers are down!), I rarely melee anything unless I'm fooling around and seeing what level elites I can solo. Most things drop well away from me, hastened to their death by my bear. I don't regret the way that I've allocated my talent points or the fact that I chose items with an eye for agility. YMMV, but it works for me.

You must increase the Growl of your pet and with humanoids you will have lot of problems because they will attack directly to you.
