In your opinion what would be the best weapon to wield as a warlock? I was thinking one handed sword... but i have an incredible staff at the moment a can't seem to part with.

Well, since I don't use my weapon at all in melee, I just buy whatever will give me the most stats. The type of weapon really doesn't matter that much. If you have a sword or dagger with good stats and can get an off-had item with good stats, go that route. If you see a good staff with better stats, get that.

A good wand is much more important IMHO.

I'm only level 18 but so far staves have been way better, for stats AND for damage. Swords seem to be geared more towards melee classes (obviously) so the stats on them usually aren't that great for a mage, plus the only sword I've seen with better dps than my staff was blue.

imo, stamina = most important stat for warlock, so get anything that gives the most stamina. with ur fear hving a cast time of 1.5s, and ur wearing only cloth, chances are u will tank quite a bit. pet hate control is ok until ur spells get too strong, and it becomes ineffecient to let ur pet tank while u plant weak DOTs.

also, i never melee/wand. i never find the time to do so. im either draining life, or blasting the mob with a high dmg spell, or fearing, or DOT, or darkpact for mp. wand or melee are just too weak/ineffecient compared to those activities imo.

I would recommend using a one-hand weapon, since it allows you to also wield something in your off-hand. This allows for greater customizability. At level 25 I wield a dagger of shadow wrath in my main hand (+5 shadow damage spells) and an off-hand item that gives +3 INT and STA. You can't get a staff that does all that.

Wands are quite worth it if you can find a good one. I recently won a Thunderwood off of the auction house for about 1 gold. As you can see, it's a 27 DPS wand. Now, consider that at my level the best DD spell I have is rank 4 Shadow Bolt, which does roughly 30 DPS. If I wand instead of Shadow Bolt an enemy I'm doing slightly less DPS, but I'm not only not using any mana, I'm also regenerating it! (Yes, mana regenerates while you use a wand.) I still use Shadow Bolt when I'm up against a particularly tough enemy, but my Thunderwood otherwise gets quite a workout.

EDIT: Oh, also, I have to mention that wands don't lose casting time when you're hit, so if you're getting hit by an enemy a wand can actually do *more* DPS than that Shadow Bolt you keep getting hit with casting time on every time that orc bashes you.

/agree

Wands have really high DPS for a weapon but the downside is you have to use them manually and you not only have a chance to miss but also a chance for a resist. I usually just plop down my DoT's and wand it to death. I can't remember the last time I had any downtime from fighting creatures 1v1. Wands are a a huge downtime saver for me. If I need the extra fire-power from a nuke, it's always there but most of the time it's just a waste of MP.

i use a 1H sword. comined with a firestone i can do about 80-100dmg a hit against a foe couple lvls lower than me. I usuall cast and keep my DoTs on him and chop him with my sword to death, or wand.
