Does the mage, at level 10, choose what magic he wants to use the rest of the game or do you just use both types of magic?

you can learn spells from all types for the whole game. At level 10 you start to get talent points, which will allow you to improve certain types of spells and abilities. While it is true that there are certain spells that you can only gain access to through expenditure of talent points in a certain way (at least that is how I understand it. I could be wrong.), those are few and you can learn most spells regardless of where your talents lay.
