Turtle>Cat? Cat>Turtle?
Everywhere I look people are mostly choosing cats. My style is basically sit and shoot. Should I be looking for more defensive pet(Turtle), or a more offensive pet(Cat,Owl,Wolf, etc...). Or would it be better if i charmed both and leveled them evenly? btw im not really a fan of bears idk why...

Like most threads about hunter information a lot of it comes down to style. If you have a pet that you like and it can stand up to the beating while you shoot then use it. I don't really like bears for looks either. After searching and searching I found an elite blue raptor that matches my guild tabard. I love him. He does his job very well. He has good enough armor and hps for me to sit back and shoot and still has great dmg too. Just find something you like and try it. Honestly half of the fun is testing new pets. You will need to tame/train other pets a lot anyway to upgrade your favorite pet. There are some things that might help you choose if style isn't a concern though.

Cat Family - hits fast which is good for PvP and also against casting PvE mobs. Low Hps and AC which isn't good for tanking constantly unless you have the gear to kill extremely fast or are killing mobs several levels lower.

Raptor Family- medium/high armor and hps with high dps which I find good for most situations

Bear Family - pretty similar to raptor family but a little more HPs and some argue a better look

Now the thing to remember is the ones above are hybrids if you will. They can learn all of the pet abilities. There are tameable beasts that are better in some aspects than these because they don't have access to all of the pet skills.

For instance:

Turtle Family - Can only learn bite, growl, cower....Has awesome AC/HP but lower dmg output. If you cannot kill very fast and need something a little more durable for tanking it isn't a bad choice. Plus it can be pretty unique.

Croc Family - Pretty much the same as the turtles but a little better damage

Wolf Family - Kind of like the bear but without Claw...

If you experiment and read up on some of the sites about the different tameable beast families you can figure out the reasons behind the subtle differences and apply it to your playstyle. The raptor fits mine. The turtle may fit yours, while a cat may suit someone else. In my opinion there is only "one best pet" and that is the one you like best.

Sorry to tack this question onto yours but Krexxis said that he tamed an elite blue raptor, and I was curious if you could a)still tame elite as I heard after a certain patch you no longer could and b)do they retain better stats and health or are they simply different looking?

A) Thats wrong you can still tame elites
B) After the last patch or was it the one before... doesnt matter which Elites no longer retain their better stats they only look different

Getting back to Tmullens Q I found this http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.aspx?fn=wow-hunter&t=155&p=1&tmp=1#post155 useful its a hnter Guide/FAQ (its very long but most of the good info is in the first page)

Some Elites are Tameable, and I found some are not, so the patch did stop some from being tamed. I have a Boar for a pet, good AC, good HP, not great dps, but he comes with a 98 to fire resist, and since I took Dragonscale armour as my master in leatherworks I find that this helps alot with the fire breathing Dragons. I have a wolf for back up due to the looks, and the thought in my head that Elves and wolves go together. Anyways not sure that helped at all, but it was my 50 cents of the day.

I know you can still tame some elites as I tamed another one last night. They do not retain anything special except the looks as far as I can tell but hey that is what I look for in a pet. As a matter of fact, all of the elites I have tamed do not even come with any skills and you have to tame them from ground zero.

ok Need some info if possible ... I am fuzzy on how to teach pets other skills other then growl ... I am a lvl 33 NE Hunter with a lvl 32-33 Raptor .... know how do I go about getting things like bite and cower and better claw for my raptor ... it was a lvl 21 or 22 when I tamed it in the wetlands.

Thanks
Lotoc

you have to bank your pet and charm a pet with that ability, use that pet until you are informed you have gained that skill, then get your favorite pet and train him that new ability. There is a site that has some of the animals with these abilities, however I forget the name, maybe someone else will post it here for you.

That is correct. Here is a site with a decent list of monsters with further abilities. Just look under the hunter link...

Enjoy.....
