Hadn't thought about it but I don't know exactly what it stands for but I know what it means. The term "proc" means the an effect is triggered. So if you have your stun blessing on and you manage to stun your target on a hit, then you "proc".

"proc" would stand for "process" as in, "The effect was processed."

At least, I think so...

This is correct, it came from EQ where proc became a common term and it basically mean anything with a chance to happen on hit. As a paladin the mains ones are Seal of Righteousness, Seal of Command, Seal of Light, and Seal of Judgement. They don't apply the actual effects with every hit but they have a chance to do so on every hit. World of Warcraft has taken this a little bit further and limited the number of times per minute on average a "proc" will occur so that slow weapons proc alot more often than fast weapons since you don't get as many swings with them in a minute.

Actually, that really isn't "taking it a little bit further", EQ procs are set up to average the same number of procs/minute (2.3p/m with a 305 DEX if I remember correctly) regardless of weapon speed (with a limited number of weapons having proc rates that vary from the norm).

Proc stands for process or procedural process and was a term originated in the early days of MUDs. Basically a procedural call attached to an item that will for all practical purposes randomly call that attached effect on the item. It was shortened to 'proc' during the heydays of MUDs and since has become the standard term in MMO's. This term did NOT come from EQ as it was around for more than a decade before that 'program' was ever released upon the world.
