Tips on Warlock Talents?Follow

Heyo! Future WoW player here who's agonizing over his first character choice. At first I was dead-set on a pally, but after taking a look at the Warlock class I'll probably make one of it too. The concept of a demonic wizard dabbling in the dark arts just seems exciting, for both combat and roleplaying purposes.

Anyway, I made a tentative talent spec up and was looking for tips. Keep in mind that I am a newbie, so don't come down too hard on me; I'm sure I made at least a few mistakes :P

Affliction - Seems to be the best tree for Warlocks; I just don't see that much good coming from the other two trees. So here's where I spent most of my points. (33 points)

Suppression - 5/5 points
Reduces the chance for enemies to resist your Affliction spells by 10%.

Improved Corruption - 5/5 points
Reduces the casting time of your Corruption spell by 2 seconds.

Improved Drain Soul - 2/2 points
Gives you a 100% chance to get a 100% increase to your Mana regeneration for 10 seconds if the target dies while while you drain its soul. In addition, your Mana may continue to regenerate while casting at 50% of normal.

Improved Life Tap - 2/2 points
Increases the amount of Mana awarded by your Life Tap spell by 20%.

Amplify Curse - 1/1 point
Increases the effect of your next Curse of Weakness or Curse of Agony by 50%, or your next Curse of Exhaustion by 20%.

Improved Drain Mana - 2/2 points
Causes 30% of the Mana drained by your Drain Mana spell to damage the opponent.

Nightfall - 2/2 points
Gives your Corruption and Drain Life spells a 3% chance to cause you to enter a Shadow Trance state after damaging the opponent. The Shadow Trance state reduces the casting time of your next Shadow Bolt spell by 100%.

Grim Reach - 2/2 points
Increases the range of your Affliction spells by 20%. (Not sure how much of a problem range is, but I like the extra pulling help. :)

Siphon Life - 1/1 point
Transfers 13 health from the target to the caster every 3 seconds. Lasts 30 seconds.

Curse of Exhaustion - 1/1 point
Reduces the target's speed to 90% of normal for 12 seconds. Only one Curse per Warlock can be active on any one target. (Unsure about this, even with the 4/4 Improved CoE. It seems good in theory, but...)

Improved Curse of Exhaustion - 4/4 points
Increases the speed reduction of your Curse of Exhaustion by 20%.

Shadow Mastery - 5/5 points
Increases the damage dealt or life drained by your Shadow spells by 10%.

Dark Pact - 1/1 point
Drains 150 of your pet's Mana, returning 100% to you.(Unsure about this one too, but I figure that anything that gives you extra mana = good. Am I wrong?)

Demonology - Not too impressed with this tree. Seems like mostly pet-specific stuff, which I'm not too keen on. (2 points)

Improved Healthstone - 2/2 points
Increases the amount of Health restored by your Healthstone by 20%. (Not sure how useful the Healthstones are, but it looks like the higher-end ones give you a *lot* of HP. A 20% increase could amount to a lot.)

Destruction - Some good things here, but there seems to be less good Destruction spells than Affliction spells, so I only put a minority of points here. (16 points)

Cataclysm - 5/5 points
Reduces the Mana cost of your Destruction spells by 5%.

Bane - 5/5 points
Reduces the casting time of your Shadow Bolt and Immolate spells by 0.5 seconds.

Shadowburn - 1/1 point
Instantly blasts the target with 87 to 99 Shadow damage. Requires 1 Soul Shard. If the target dies from Shadowburn, and yields experience, the caster gains a Soul Shard. (Mmm. Instant damage.)

Devastation - 5/5 points
Increases the critical strike chance of your Destruction spells by 5%.

Comments/critiques/flames welcome! Thanks in advance!

I realize that you are new to the Warlock class, however, keep in mind that, while some talents do look impressive, you may find as you go along, you have no use for them. Talents are more about how YOU play the class. Talents don't make or break you, they make you special in the ways you play =)

For me, I am a Destruction Warlock or what beta users called a "Fastlock" I will have most of the talents filled in the distruction tree. For me, this works great. Normally I am partied with a group and DoTs do nothing for me, since things die rather quickly. If I do solo, I solo with my Imp pet.

So hence, It's all about how you play. There is nothing wrong with having to respec your talents to fit how you play if you make a unwanted choice.

Thanks for clearing that up Mystic. Since I'm coming from FFXI I guess I'm sort of used to the "OMFG you didn't do this and this and this and this with your character so you're GIMP!" mentality shared by most of the playerbase there. From what you've said, it seems as though there's no real way to gimp your character with talents, so I can rest a bit easier now. :)

I solo a ton so I've put most of my talent points into my demonology tree.

The previous poster is 110% correct though, it's all about how YOU play the class. If you group a lot then go with affliction or destruction. I don't group much so my pets are my lifeblood and I want them as buff as possible.

I've got a 70 cleric in EQ and I wanted as far away as possible from the healing grind, I think you'll find the warlock a welcome class in a group (even if you're not destruction buffed your dps isn't THAT gimp) and you'll be able to solo like a god.

You'll also like your paladin..explore his trees and after level 10 you'll normally be able to tell what tree you're going to explore.

The best part about it is, you can reset them for a fee, it's one gold, but it's worth it to redo the whole thing if you figure out another way to play, and it's nice if you decide you'd like to play your character differently.

It gets more expensive every time, however..

Just a little tip, if you get anything from the demonology line you should get the -5% spirit for +15% stamina. I noticed you got the healthstone buff, but keep in mine that at level 60 that is only like 250 more hp for your healthstone. Where as the +15% stamina would be about 500-600 more hp. And you will find out that spirit is pritty much useless.

Also, you will find out later on that you will have hardly any downtime because of lifetap and your health drains. So I don't find Dark Pact that usefull. And the only time I use sould drain is to actually get shards, so not sure how good improved soul drain would be either. The 100% mana regen is nice, but I tick about 30 mana a second, with the regen I tick about 90 mana a second. This seems nice on paper, but in game I am hardly ever low on mana at the high levels even after fighting a 2 on 1.

But pritty much the other guys are sorta correct. Talents won't make or break any character, but they help out a HUGE amount.

Also all my suggests are PVP based, I only play on PVP servers so when I build a template or look at a template I only look at it for fighting other players not monsters.

If you are on a pvp server I highly suggest going against the demonoly line except for the stamina buff. I have yet to have a case where I was fighting a player and he went after my pet first instead of going after me.

Hope this helps

A few tips of mine.

With the 1 sec global spell cooldown. I find spending more than 2-3 points in improved corruption is a waste of points. The Talent Ruin (x2 critical Destructions spells dmg) is well worth its 1 point cost if you got Devestation. If you use your seccubus more than occasionally get the improved las of pain. with about a 4 second cooldown it can deal out pleanty of damage. well worth 2 points.
