Several hunter questions.Follow

#1 Dec 17 2004 at 10:31 PM Rating: Decent
I have been messing around with a bunch of classes lately, and a hunter has really caught my attention. I have a few questions regarding the class itself before I take it seriously.

1. What is a hunters role in the average exp group?

2. What talent tree is the best for solo/group PvE(Player versus Enviornment, no PvP at all, just fighting mobs and quests.) I have looked at the talent trees and I really have no clue what I should be shooting for. All the information I find is based on PvP.

3. What strategy should I use for soloing? Send pet in to tank and shoot from afar?

4. What type of gear should I look for as a soloing/grouping hunter?

5. What type of pet do you guys think would be best for a PvE hunter? A pet with more hp, more dmg, a balance of the two? I would like to have a beat pet, would that be viable?

6. Which race has the best starting area as far as hunter quests/equipment is concerned?

Thanks in advance, sorry if some of these questions are dumb, but I like to have a plan before I start a class.

I can help out with number 4. Generally the stats you want to boost are in this order +Stamina, +Agility, +Strength. STamina gives huge gains to your hp, agility gives a much less pronounced gain to dodging and damage, strength will help with damage. Please note those are for a pvp player though; while you'll still get a lot of benefit from a setup like that in PvE, there may be other combo's that work better.

well im only lvl 20 atm but will try to answer some of these. Most of these questions though are just personal preference.

1. I have not grouped much but the few times i did it was as main tank with the pet. This really depends on your group makeup. But that is the great thing about being a Hunter, you are a jack of all trades. You will never, or should never really be the main tank yourself though, but your pet works well here.

2. Again, this will be dependant upon your style of play. Are you the type to get in there with your pet and mix it up? Are you the type to send in the pet and let him do most of the work. Or do you want to be the sharpshooter. Myself i opted for a mix of marksmanship and beast. I want my pet to be a beefy tank.

3. Again personal preference. I usually pull with concussion then send in pet. I then just pick away at it. If the pet looks to be in danger ill toss everything at it to get it to try and come to me.

4. You start out with leather and a few weapon choices. At 40 you can train in mail, and you can also train in several weapons. At 20 you get dual wield as well. Right now i take what i can get and what does the most damage. I especially look for ranged items. I took mining and engineering so i can make my own wpns, ammo, and scopes. Stat wise i would say stamin and agility.

5. Pets. I suggest you go out and find the pet you are happiest with. Some pets are better with some mobs than others. I. e. cats are great against caster mobs, with the faster attack speed etc. But really its up to you and what your happy with. I have a bear atm and am quite happy with that. Had a spider to that i was really impressed with on how quick it finished the mobs.

6. agree with the above poster. None is really above anotherm, go with what makes you happy. I took dwarves cause i wanted alliance and they also get guns and a bonus to guns. (was going to do NE during beta).

This is a very flexible class. Just dont forget to tame other mobs to learn your skills and keep them current on your best buddy.

1. Crowd control and ranged damage.

2. Any of them.

3. Yep, pet is your tank. Use it to hold hate and blast away.

4. +Agility and +Stamina are your friend as far as gear. Find as much as possible with the highest defense. Rinse, repeat.

5. I am a strong believer in crabs, turtles and scorpids. All have astronomical defense. Scorpid can hit pretty decent as well, supplementing growl for hate control.

6. There really isn't an area that is better than another. Pick which race you like the best and go with it.

1. Really haven't grouped much with my hunter. When I have grouped, I do the same as when I'm soloing... which is to try and stay out of melee. Smiley: smile

2. I'm going with marksmenship and beast. I love the fact that my hunter doesn't fold like a house of cards in an F4, but melee really isn't his thing. Maybe with lots of points in survival he could be, but... hunters have all these cool special shots and I just chew right through mobs at range.

3. That's what I do. Sometimes I'll fire off a concussive shot as my pet is running in... I can start firing right off without drawing aggro in most cases. Pets taunt nicely.

4. I have 1h axe and dagger trained, and I dual wield. Personal preference... I like faster weapons and I like using two at once. My guy's Tauren so I'll take all the agility help I can get. Smiley: cool Plus I'm very ranged-centric... so theoretically I have less need for stamina (since I shoudn't be getting beat on) and less need for strength (since I don't melee a lot). Spirit is cool for regen, but I won't pick a spirit item over agility if I have a choice.

5. Again, just personal preference... I'm fond of bears. I have an Ashenvale bear right now... he's a good tank and he'll eat darn near anything.

6. I can only speak for horde. Orcs and trolls start in the same place... desert-type area with a decent amount of copper if you want to mine. Taurens have a grassier area and a very southwestern/Native American flavor to their towns. Taurens start with a gun; not sure about Orcs or Trolls. (In fact, I didn't realize Orcs could be hunters, but it says they can on this page!) I ended up training bow and I've not used a gun in a while... it's good to keep both up, though, in case you loot an awesome version of one or the other.

I've found in my experience the average role in any group is Puller & Hate control. Say what you will about the other classes, but the hunter is able to keep hate on no less then 2 creatures at a time. That doesn't mean you'll be the one to finish them off, but due to your melee abilities and your pets growl between the two of you no other class (IMHO) is quiet as good.

I only play on PvE i haven't really experimented as I thought the Beast Master tree was all that and a bag of chips. Your pet is normally just another DPS weapon, it can tank, but if you don't specialize in the Beast Master tree I don't see how effective it could be.

Using the Beast master tree you can increase your pets armor class, damage per second (DPS), the focus of your pet (Mana/Rage/etc), the hit points, crit ability and its ability to hold aggro. Its attack speed and later at the highest level you can even have your pet heal you as it attacks.

3. What strategy should I use for soloing? Send pet in to tank and shoot from afar?

This is my normal formula for soloing.

Find mob
Set Explosive trap/ Immolation trap
send in pet
Before pet arrives (just before)use Serpent Sting (DoT)
Concussive shot
Arcane shot while backing up to allow mob to fall over trap.
Auto-Shoot once mob is in fight with pet.
Serpent sting as needed.

4. What type of gear should I look for as a soloing/grouping hunter?

I use a lot of Agility gear. Being a leather crafter and a skinner, I find that I don't have a money problem. I craft my own armor (for the most part) and can sell items I create to the NPC merchants for a 200% on materials.

LOL beat pets would rock! I'd like a strange pet myself, but WoW only allows certain creatures to be tamed. Once you get beast lore (not sure about the level) you can use it to determine if it is possible to tame a pet.

I use a DPS pet, I tried using a bear (my fellow hunters love bears and Raptors) but it didn't work for me. "Teddy" Could take a licking and keep on ticking. But had trouble holding aggro after the one of the patches. Now I use an Ape "GrapeApe" and a Raptor "Pickles". Pickles does DPS holds aggro great, Grape is good to high end slow damage and has done ok holding aggro.

The race question only matters to level 10 (if that). Afterward every race has pretty much an equal ability to kick butt. It depends upon your choice of weapons I think. If you want to use a Gun, be a dwarf. (Natural +5 to guns skill) Otherwise it really doesn't matter.
