I'm a troll warrior, and my friends are an undead mage and tauren druid, and I'm going to be partying with them alot. This means I'm going to be the one who runs up to be hit in the face so the others don't have to. Now, this is good, I enjoy being the tank.. alot. I feel like I'm an important part of the team. I'm going to be specializing in the protection talent school. The problem is, I LOVE how trolls look when using 2-handed swords, but many of the protection abilities and talents require the use of a shield. Is there some way I can use protection and use a 2-handed sword, or do I have to use a sword and shield?

Also, this arises a 2nd question: what do I do when not in a party? Should I train in dual wield so I can use my sword and axe simultaniously? I notice that alot of the good 1-handed weapons are main hand only, does this make dual wield useless for a warrior?

Don't worry about it 99% of the time you can group with your friends to XP or quest and not have to use a shield. I would keep a shield on you for tuff mobs, but your going to have the buffs and heals from the druid so you will be able to go without it most of the time. I do it all the time and I stay in battle stance and only change to defensive to taunt then go right back to battle stance. This will cause you to loose all your rage but my friends that I group with understand how a warrior works. They don't mind takeing a hit or 2 while I use up my rage then switch to taunt. I have put everything into defensive stance also. There is a lot of skill points that you can use without just puting them in shield.

When you reach high lv and tanking for a group you would want a shield seriously. Im lv 41 now and doing instance and elite quest with groups, i'll slap my shield and 1h sword on. When solo or just non-elite quest i'll slap my 2h sword or dual on for quick kills. You have to understand that if you are the main tank you must have all the armor you can have or the group will fail. At lower lv it didn't matter much. I went solo or pair with my buddy, but when i got up high it was difficult. I also dual wield but found it wasn't helping out, I have since sold my dual weapons.

At higher lv its more of a team oriented quest, so you'll be expected to play your roll in the team. If you tank - get armor up, if you support - get that high dps 2h out and taunt ready. Protecting your healer is the number 1 priority. You might not look pretty but you'll have better chance of surviving when 3 or 4 elites coming at you.

Learn to change stance (Skill up Tactical Plz - its a must for warrior)
