Best Race For Hunter Out Of Nightelf, Tauren, Orc, and DwarfFollow

#1 Nov 13 2004 at 1:34 PM Rating: Decent
Can anyone tell me what the best race choice for a Hunter is? I know I want to be either a Nightelf, Tauren, Orc, or Dwarf (less Dwarf than the others). It's been tearing me apart for a while now trying to figure this out so any help is desperately wanted

Depends on how you want to play him and what alliance you want.

Pet cleric and range fighter go with high intelligence. If you want to get in and mellee and sort of tank then go with a high strength and stamina one. Dwarf has probably the best "all around" stats but is so god awful ugly. I went with Tauren and the Horde.

I think you are forgetting another very good race, (unless your against them). Trolls as well as orcs are. But trolls with their enhanced regeneration and bonus towards beast considering beast are the best for hunters too hunt, at least at low lv. Plus the bonus with throwing and since hunters are ranged their seems to be good reason to pick someone with a ranged bonus.

Yeah thanks I never really considered trolls because I was looking more into Nightelf and Orc/Tauren since I did best with them in the Warcraft RTS games. I was thinking about awesome range and decent melee hunter, but it's really a toss up between troll and dwarf. Pors and cons for these are appreciated.

There is no "best" race for any class. Seriously, there isn't. Those statistical differences you see disappear by level 10, and the racial traits are MINOR. Choose the race you like and enjoy any tangential benefits, but do NOT choose race based on which is perceived as "best".

Uh, Night Elf hands down, they have the highest agility which accounts for both Ranged damage and melee damage when you are Rogue or Hunter. The only thing they lack is health, but they do make up for it a bit in armor.

Exactly. That is whta is so great about this game, be the class and race you want to be, no one race is better than the other. People don't seem to get that. Blizzard did a very good job in making this game balanced, enjoy it they way you want.

I posted this in another topic:

Stats do make a difference. My NElf Hunter had far fewer HP than my Tauren hunter and equal level. Less STR more AGI. A good amount more MP for NElf, too. NElf hunters are pretty much straight markmenship hunters, whereas Tauren was doing more damage w/ melee attacks than w/ gun.

NElf: had high AGI and Mana for stading back and loading arrows into enemy while using abilities as they popped w/o having to worry about mana.

Tauren: had high HP and STR so they could get up close and melee while being able to take hits and survive.

I love Taurens but when I think hunter I think Night Elf. I would prefer to be a melee hunter, but Hunter has the second lowest STR and HP in the game (behind Gnome). Hunter doesn't get many melee abilities and should ideally stay back while warrior (or pet if soloing) takes the damage, and fill enemy with arrows. Hunters get a ton of marksmenship abilities. AGI affects how often you Crit and I crit'd about 20% more often on my NElf than my Tauren.

Troll seems like a good mix of STR, AGI, HP, and MP. I would play it if I could stand how it looks.

As was said though each has advantages and disadvantages.

I am going with dwarf because while Dwarfs lack some agility they more than make up for it with almost twice the HP, 6 points more str and 4 more stamina. this means that not only do they deal more dammage 4-5 (4-7) to elf's 4-5 (3-5) but they also survive alot longer as well because of their higher HP and stamina.

The only real advantage Night Elf's have besides agility is their armor which is higher by 16 points. but they need that because of their rather low hit points and once we hit level 40 that wont matter much as 16 points is not going to make alot of difference when you have 1000 def.

as for traits the Night elf only has 2 useful traits out of the 4 that were given to them those being.

Shadowmeld: Activate while immobile and out of combat to enter stealth mode (this is ok but you have to disengage the enemy and stop moving for it to work so in pvp this would really suck espically against another hunter)
Quickness: Dodge chance increased

now Dwarf's have 4 very useful traits

Stoneform: Activate to gain immunity to poison, disease, and bleed (this is godly against rouges, as most of their good attacks center around poisoning their target, the downside is that your speed is cut in half but with aspect of cheeta you can recover some of the lost speed)
Gun Specialization: Increase Gun Skill (rangers are ment to be long range so very usefull in my book)
Frost Resistance: Increase Cold Resistance (most cold attacks freeze or stun you so this is actually usefull)
Treasure Finding: Activate to see treasure chests on mini map - lasts until canceled - no cooldown (again no loss here this allows me to find the treasure chest before other people do.

with that said I still like rouge and will probably make and elven rouge for their pickpocket and picklock abilities, and use my Dwarf Hunter to scout out for and mark all the treasure chests as they usually spawn in the same location every time.

as i played a troll hunter, i specifically selected them for the berzerk (which i ended up not liking), the enhanced regen (cool), and the throwing ability. after seeking out the weapon master and training in this skill, i went and bought some throwing axes only to find to my dismay that throwing wpns are not considered ranged. so all my nice abilities were useless in this aspect, however the enhanced regen is quite nice in pvp =p

I played a tauren hunter until 16th solo, and then helped someone my wife which got in the extended beta catch up. I got to 21 and she 19th (shaman).

All I can add to this from what has already been said is that I cannot count the times that "stomp" saved my life.

NE are the best because they have the highest Agility (Crit, Damage, Dodge) and they have Shadowmelt.

Shadowmelt is by far the most powerfull racial ability for Hunters in PvP. It help you ambush people and protect you when youre not in combat. Combined with Track Humanoid, Aspect of the Cheetah, NE Hunter are very good.

I had alot of successfull battle with my NE Hunter in both 1v1 and mass PvP. In a 1 on 1 encounter, I was able to Shadowmeldt and let my pet do the initial strike on my target. Even when your pet as engaged an enemy, Shadowmelt won't be canceled so you stay hidden. When your pet start fighting your target, that player will have him targetted and you can freely start shooting the opposing player. Unless he turn around and start searching for you, he wont be able to target you to initiate combat. But even if he manage to find you and start attacking, its usually too late because your at 35 yrds and the enemy is already too damaged.

During mass PVP, I was able to move in the side of the opposing force while my main group was on the other side confronting them. I would use Shadowmelt and hide until some weakeaned player ran away and then I would ambush them. The enemies weren't able to see me since I was hidden until I started to attack.

Only downside is that you need to take into account that your pet doesn't turn invisible when you activate Shadowmelt so it can be easy to figure out where you are for the enemy. The best is to use the Stay pet command and park your pet somewhere far from you.

I strongly suggest to other peopl who want to play Hunters and PvP to pick NE, because I really beleive that they have an edge over the other races in PvP because of Shadowmelt.

Played a wide varity of Hunters in OB, don't worry about stats, gear and levels will fix that, mostly its personal preferance and racial abilities. The 2 I like most is Orc *increased pet damage* and Dwarves *increased ranged damage with a gun*. Your 2 major damage options. Dwarf will fly by the early levels using ranged attacks with a decent gun, and you pet will outdamage any other same level pet as an Orc. The other races abilities are used few and far between as a Hunter, but all have their place, NE can shadow then snipe, if the mob gets close your Tauren can stomp, then run back and fire a few more arrows, Trolls have less downtime. But if we're talking purely damage output, go with Dwarf or Orc.

I'm glad to hear you made your decision, Omega! w00t ^^

I'm just adding onto this thread why I chose Dwarf, for all those who happen to stumble in here looking for ideas ^^

Stoneform: Aside from the immunities, it also adds 5% Def. I usually pop it on right before I try to tame something. It gives a better chance of a successful tame.

Bonus to Guns: Obvious reasons ^^

Also, on a side note...
I love all the '/v silly' and '/v flirt' jokes.

Actually i think trolls have the higest agility not to diminish night elves, night elves the highest agility and intelligence combined and their hide in the shadows ability is great for an ambush or occasionally a duck and cover if u can move out of there fast enough but nothing an invisibility or speed enhancment couldnt cover at higher lvs. But think of how many raids you will be doing before 20 those are all just fun and games when your bored.

Not saying they are the best, but I love my troll because of it's racial passives and high AGI growth. I'm making talents into a pure damage build, and I do lots of damage, can tank when my pet is weakened, and solo most elites my level. (Hunting alone in Wailing Caves = weeee.)
