Warlock weapon choicesFollow

My understanding from reading forums at WoW is that warlock starts with dagger skill only then can buy one handed sword skill. One poster mentioned that a trainer will sell you any weapon skill. I know warlocks arent mellee but was wondering if they could buy the axe skill? It might sway me to choose orc over undead for warlock since the orc gets a bonus to pet dmg and axe dmg. Thanks for any advice.

That list above has all the weapon proficiencies a warlock can learn. The person probably meant that the weapon trainers can train any skill you're allowed to have anyway. That same weapon trainer who couldn't teach a warlock which end of the axe is the weapon could probably teach a warrior to use one in each hand.

Warlocks are probably better off with staves, anyway-- staves have caster stats and you won't usually have anything in the other hand.

I did say usually, Zsyura. Anyway, I find that the benefits of using a staff generally outweigh those of using a one-handed weapon and an off-hand item. There are a few exceptions, but for the most part the increase in stats and damage make the staff a better choice.

Well, until youget to make Fire stones.... then even a dagger will hurt.

Is it just me or do staves not effect ranged dmg when equiped? I learned the Staff Certification and equiped it but my ranged stats said N/A. It only effected my melee stats.

This is one area I didn't spend much time using/researching with my warlock. I went with wands as early as possible. You can find wand vendors in most towns. They never run out of charges, are good close or ranged, and no mana requirements. I used the wand quite a bit in those tough fights where pet died and I would run out of mana.

I never did find a decent offhand item, but the firestones seem decent (start at level 28). I am not sure on the proc rate though. I didn't make it to 28 to test it out.

I found that wand is your best damage dealer weapon, then just use whatever gives you the best stat increase to hold. I usually walked around with my fishing pole :)

Well, once you finish the warlock quest for your staff or offhand orb, you'll probably want the staff. Simple quest, great xp, 28dps+other stat bonus staff. They robe quest (pictured above) is a sweet robe as well. Took me like 3 hours to run around and get all of the components but well worth it.
