Can a hunter tame a pet that is a higher level, or can you not see higher level beasts, i think you cant see them but i would prefer to be sure. and wouldnt it be cool if there was like a special PvP arena just for your pets.

u can only tame a pet that is within the skills restriction... i.e first level tame only allows for up to a level 5 monster tame ....so no u cant tame a higher level monster

#3 Aug 24 2004 at 12:52 AM Rating: Decent

Yeah. A named or elite monster would hit harder or faster or both, so they would be a bit of a chalenge over normal mobs.
But you only need to live the 20 seconds it takes to tame them.

Hehe, 20 seconds is a damn long time when a tiger is using you for a chew toy!

You can only tame Beasts, of those you cannot tame all types of beasts, some are untameable. Beast must be of equal or lower level to tame.

Each beast tamed can have different attack styles and after you attain the 2nd lvl of devotion of the beast, you learn these styles and train other pets with them.

So far there are 4 types of styles: Bite, Claw, Cower and Growl.

Bite: Does an added amount of damage. All pets get Bite.

Claw: Does an added amount of damage. Not all pets get this (wolves, thunderwings, PlainStriders don't to name a few).

Cower: Drops aggro from the pet, not really a useful skill that I have seen, as I prefer my pet to hold aggro and if I need it off him, I have special attacks that generate aggro.

Growl: Raises aggro to the pet.

What I have found so far:

Bite: Wolves, Spider types get Bite.

Claw: Bears, Crabs, Scorpids get Claw.

Cower: Not found any yet, not really looking.

Growl: Must be trained at a pet trainer.

There are different levels of these attacks, 5th and up are lvl I, 10th+ are lvl II, 20th+ are lvl III. This is general and not firm as some lower levels CAN have the higher lvl attacks.

So far I am finding the Hunter class to be pretty robust, even without Talents.

You can tame elite monsters. I had a friend in the stress test who did just that, going into Wailing Caverns and emerging with an elite raptor as a pet. Turns out the elite status doesn't carry over once you tame it, but it looked darn nice.

At Level 11 Hunter I was able to tame a level 10 Elder Nightstalker (Cat). I took the 20 second beating and still had 18hp to boot. If you fail, your pretty much cooked unless you have some good healing available (alchemy healing potions or first aid). I tried a few times to tame Level 11 Giant Venomous Spiders and such, but they beat me down too fast. I was buffed with Druid buffs and 5 potions from the Alchemy side.

Not sure if there is an "easy" way to get plenty of food to keep them happy. I hear there are vendors wandering around, and you can take up cooking or fishing to have a constant supply of food.

At level 13 have a lvl 8 owl. Wont eat anything except Jerky and thighs. Other foods not wanted, this includes some cooked foods and eggs and fishes from fishing. Any info if different pets have different appetites?

Yes, the different types of pet prefer different types of food. cats, for example, prefer fish, though they'll eat some kinds of meat. Bears seem to eat anything.

One thing to remember, as I just got my pet last night I remember reading this.

When you are attempting to "Tame" a beast you AC goes to ZERO.
So anything but an HP buff would be useless the time of Taming.

u can tame a pet your current level or lower. also your pet will not gain xp when u and your pet are the same level. after u level up he will then start to gain xp again

Duskbats also have Cower, and when taming Troll's Blood potions or a heal-over-time help a ton. ;)

The pet doesn't STEAL xp.
The pet CANNOT tap/tag a monster.
If your pet kill a monster by its own (you do 0% dmg) you WON'T gain XP.

IMO, the pet is considered as outside help. If you don't do enough dmg to the mob VS your pet, you don't gain the full XP.

TRICK to tame high level pets that can shred you to pieces --> Ice trap! Put an Ice trap in-between you and the beast you're trying to tame. If done right, it will buy you 10 seconds or more if your trap is higher level (or with talents).

Horde side, there is a level 6-7 quest in Sen'Jin that rewards any player that completes it with 10 Really Sticky Glue. This item roots the target in place for up to 10 seconds. I used this to capture several pets throughout my time as a hunter, and the nice thing is, you can roll another alt if needed and send yourself some more, or check the auction house to see if anyone else has already done it for you. This helps reduce the amount of damage you'll take if attempting to tame a pet closer to your level.

You can only tame pets equal to your level or below.
Named pets will shrink, loose there special abilities and the name will change as well.
So far I never got killed while taming a pet and I always tamed equal level pets. A good thing to do though is to activate aspect of the monkey, which increases your dodge rate, this is very helpful during taming. And already mentioned was the ice trap which is a live safior as well.
