I am not beta testing, would love to be, but wasn't lucky enough. I would like to know some of the basics of the rogue, consisting of abilities, ability to solo, desirability of groups, and such. Any info would be interesting :)
#2REDACTED, Posted: Jun 10 2004 at 6:43 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I clicked on a link off of the ffxi page and came here, what the **** is this game. Hope that answeres your questions about the rogue.

well i hear that rogues can deal INCREDIBLE amounts of damage with back stab and the other attacks they get. any class can solo effectively in this game and i suppose the groups seek them because of the damage they deal. This is what i heard. not completely sure.

Yes if anyone could give me an imput I would most greatful. I hope, *crossing my fingers to get on the Euro beta test* that I will be able to give this class a try soon. I have played the rogue class before in one guise or another and it is my favorite by far. Can anyone who has played a rogue before in other games give any feedback on what they like about the WoW rogue class? Thanks in advance

I am playing a rogue right now, and it's great, soloing is awesome, havn't really grouped for anything yet, but I havn't found a need too. They have stealth, which turns you invisible to enemy's, so you can sneak up behind them and either rob them or hit them with a backstab.

Well, I am not on the beta team, but what I do know is from the EQ rogue, which i am assuming will be the same basic role for WoW. In EQ, rogues were used for several things. Mainly, damage was their strong point. Having the main tank in front of the enemy and the rouge in the back of it to use it's highly valued backstab to do major damage. (And it looks like there's more damage dealing skills for the rogue in this game) Then when the enemy turned and faced the rogue, it would use sneak to trick the enemy into attacking the main tank again, in WoW the equivilent to it would be the feint skill. Other than the ammounts of damage, in EQ rogues were used for their ability to sneak into dungeons or new areas to find good fighting spots, to check if important mobs were up to be killed or to find corpses (the latter does not seem to be needed for WoW). Lockpicking skills were important also to the rogue of EQ, and i am sorry if I'm wrong, but i did not see any implication of the need in WoW. Then also, a very overlooked skill in EQ for rogues were their poisons that helped them with various things such as snare, direct damage, or even damage ofer time. Finally, they were used a lot in the end game after several EQ expansions to disarm traps. It got really annoying that when you walked on a certain unmarked spot that a bunch of mobs would come at you, or you just lost health- so having a rogue around helped a lot there as well.

So, for people that hate reading long posts:
Rogues in EQ were liked for Damage, Scouting, Lockpicking (unsure if needed in WoW), Poisons and Disarming Traps.

I hope this post will help some people who have wondered about this class.

I recently had a chance to play around with the beta, and I chose a dwarven rogue. First off, any of you familiar with EQ will be fairly comfortable with the Rogue's role in WoW. A Rogue's bread and butter is sneaking and combat manuevers. At the higher levels the backstab is a devastating attack. Nothing shocking there. What is different is how Wow deals with those special abilities. Rogues have a energy bar for special mauevers which prevents you from doing all your maunevers one after another. This forces you to pac yourself in combat so you can bust out a big finishing move near the combat's end. Some special attacks cost more than others (like backstab). There's really too much for me to detail here without boring you. So the basics: Rogues sneak. WoW handles sneaking very well. Rogues have combat manuevers that are cool and interesting, allowing them to solo creatures equal to their level fairly easily. On the other hand, many abilities that rogues have in EQ are considered professional skills. Lock Smithing, Alchemey (poisons), etc. I can honestly say that Rogues are hellishly fun to play. Hope that helps.

I got into the Phase 3 beta for WoW, and have been playing a Rogue myself for a while. I have a lvl 29 Night Elf Rogue.

Rogues are indeed damage dealers. As far as soloing goes, Blizzard has stated numerous times that it is their goal to make every class in the game soloable to the lvl 60 cap. Each class does so in a different manner. Warriors can solo because they are tough as nails and can outlast any single similar lvl mob. Rogues, on the other hand, solo by dealing large amounts of damage and killing mobs before they have the chance to deal much damage. We can't last too long in a toe to toe because we do get hit pretty hard. However, our skills allow us to end most fights very quickly, and downtime is typically very short. I can pretty much walk through mobs a couple lvls lower than me, and still solo mobs a couple lvls higher than me with minimal downtime (Half a minute or less in most cases, depending on whether I can use first aid, healing potions, or have to sit and eat food)

Ambush, Backstab, and eviscerate do indeed have their uses, and are potent skills, but they are not the end-all of rogue abilities, for one primary reason. Their damage is mitigated (or reduced) by armor. Against heavily armored mobs, these skills are of limited use. However, we are given other skills to use in these scenarios, and those are our DoT abilities. Garrote is a stealth back position opener and Rupture is a combo point finishing move, both of which apply DoT damage to mobs that is NOT mitigated by armor.

So, against soft targets direct damage skills will be very useful, while against harder targets you'll either have to start out with an Expose Armor finisher (which decreases target armor), or fall back on our DoT skills. I personally switch to the DoTs due to the initial setup of Expose Armor to get the armor down for backstab or eviscerate.

As for lockpicking, the last patch removed that as a tradeskill learnable by all classes and made it a rogue only class skill. Poisons are also seperate from Alchemy, and are only usable by rogues (contrary to the Rogue page on worldofwarcraft.com, rogues cannot apply poisons to other players weapons or give other palyers poisoned weapons) Alchemy is a useful skill that allows you to make an assortment of beneficial potions though.

From what this is sounding like, I'll be at home in this class. I played a Nightshade on DoC, and alot of this stuff sonds like the Nightshades. I loved the class, especially backstab, and am looking forward to playing this, though I missed out completely on the Beta Test.

Heh, I played a rogue on the stress-test, it was a blast!

Undead Rogues are pretty insane, with all their crazy pvp-oriented racial traits.. such as underwater breathing, and then, with stealth and backstab + ambush, it's an incredible class, any race will do - I just love Undead! ;)! I assure that if you play this game - you will have overwhelming excitement!

On the Beta test. is there any possibility for Pvp yet ?

And if so. How is the Rogue compared to other classes ?
I too played rogue in EQ a while back on Tallon Zek server.
And must say that pvping with a rogue in EQ was challenging and very funny. Tried Daoc after EQ and pvp there sucked more than getting a 45 tonne lorry rammed right into your dark browned tunnel.

The classes are fairly balanced for PvP right now. Rogues get kited like crazy if they don't get the drop on their targets, but if the target lets you stay close you will destroy them.

As for races: it matters virtually not at all what race you choose. The statistical differences are close to 0 and the racial traits are minor.

just wondering most of the time what would win a Rouge VS Warrior??

u sayd Rouges do massive dmg and gota kill quick, where as warriors tank???

so a rouge would kill a warrior Quick?? or couldnt hurt a warrior enough and warrior smashes ?????

From my own personal knowledge I would say it matters, one how the person set they're character's talents up and how good the person's equipment is.

But personally I had a lv22 NE Rogue at the end of the Open Beta. I've had several fights with Warriors and I've left the battlefield littered with the corspes of several Warriors.

Granted there is no guarantee that Rogue will dominate all in encounters. But whenever I entered a PVP fight I was always pretty confident that a few characters were dying that night.
