Sorry for the newbie question that follows: For the first time I want to craft something without having a recipe or leve for it. Is it possible to craft without having the actual recipe or leve for crafting it? Please let me know. Thank you

Why yes! Utilize sites like this one for recipe information. ZAM and other fan sites have recipe guides for every craft. You just have to collect the ingredients needed for the synth in game and make sure you have the shards/crystals.
For starters, you can grind fish for low level culinary AND alchemy.
You can sponsor the materials yourself with fishing in town or in a rank 1 area outside of town.
