I'm having issue with this first quest "Training and Trees". It says I need to make willow planks. 6 of them. So I did...and it wont let me turn them in. I keep seeing threads saying i get the willow logs from some npc to make the planks, however, i still have yet to see that npc. Anyone mind helping please?

As far as I know, the NPC that will give you the materials to start the local leve is usually indicated in your journal when you click on the corresponding leve.
Let's use Manine in Camp Bentbranch for example. Let's say you got this leve http://ffxiv.zam.com/en/localleve.html?ffxivlocalleve=120203
You would go see Manine, talk to him and he will give you the materials.. Once it says you got the mats from him, then you can select the synth in the requested items for A Mother's Carpentry...
It'll keep track of your synth progress and will let you know when you have enough items to hand in to finish the leve. You can keep going and use up all the mats they give, extra XP... Once you are done using up all your free mats, you go hand in the leve and get your reward.
If you were using your own logs, maybe that's why you can't hand it in. Use the provided logs and try then.

I went to the npc it says to go to and he doesn't give me the logs. so either this quest is bugged or it's just the dumbest rank 1 quest ever designed. -_- still requesting help from anyone thats actually done it. Where do i get these logs?

Same problem. I have nothing to assist in becoming a carpenter (I want to progress making myself a higher level cane as a conjurer and could do with the skill to achieve this).
Doing the training and trees local leve in Limsa and NOTHING is provided by anybody. The requester is not an NPC and the receiver (in Bearded rock) is just plain pissed off.
I have tried looking everywhere for something to use my trusty saw on and the miner "sparkles" and botanist "sparkles" are all over the place but nothing for carpentry.
Am I missing something. I just want to chop a tree down. A trees a tree so why cant I get stuck in about choppin the damn thing down.
Sheesh.
Any help on how to kick start Carpentry and sourcing materials (other than purchasing them which circumvents the whole problem!)

Turns out that the materials were indeed provided with the leve when i talked to either Nahctahr OR the issuer of the local leves in Limsa. Either way the materials are already in possession and you dont need to go looking for them.
Could still do with some advice on finding materials manually though :)
Hope this helps anyone else who is blissfully unaware that they already have the materials.
