Is it worth leveling the shield abilities as a THM? I've got a maple shield and have learned the 'guard' skill. I see there's a whole raft of other abilities if you level this.

If you're using a 1H weapon, there isn't a reason not to use a shield. You might as well skill it up, you never know when you'll want a leveled up shield long down the road especially as they add more jobs.
I used to play with a two hander, but since I aquired a sheepskin targe, i'm loving the look and the occasional block/counter.
I've also noticed a slightly better survivability in groups when I get the attention of a stray mob.
