I think its too early to tell exactly what gear is available however a few items I have found are good for THM (as well as other classess tbh) -

Cowl (Coton, Hemp etc) - these have very good stats although you cannot wear headgear so this might lessen the value. In Beta you could wear a headgear piece as well :(

Bone Ring +1 (or NQ version) - Magic Accuracy +2

Copper Scepter - Rank 6 optimum and a few better stats than weathered
Bone Staff - Rank 5 optimum (I tried this one out but you run slower with it out and it hits for higher but takes longer per hit)
Decorated Copper Scepter - Rank ??? (had this in Beta and found it very good. Better than the previous two) - yet to purchase in retail.

Basically any piece of gear that enhances magic potency, accuracy, has increased MP/HP (although I don't think this MP is that important) or increases in elemental resistance.

Stick with scepter/shield, you will hardly notice the loss of att/acc, and the shield is a life-saver. Level Goldsmith to 10 and you can HQ those Bone Rings fairly easy. The +1/2s dont add more magic Acc., but do contribute more defense, mag. defense, and evasion. Bone Ring is a level 2 synth. I was told Fang Earrings have hidden stats of +5 to attack and magic potency. Just make sure you get gear that has THM in the "Favors:" field, so you get the most from it. Goldsmith also makes and repairs the scepters you will be using.

Does anyone know what kind of penalty a DOM takes when wearing non-preferred gear, such as mail or heavy armor?

Agreed, wards became useless in release, they were somewhat useable in CB with a very low population but nowadays it's just thousands of retainers selling rat fur and puk wings.

Nowadays I just go to the appropriate guild or repair NPC and ask locally for what I want. 10x more effective than scouring through retainers.
